View Full Version : Engine serial number on an FZR250?

I went to get my bike complied and the tester failed it because he couldnt find the engine serial number. I had a look myself and all I could find was a plate with 1HX on it.

Couple of questions:

1, Does the tester need the engine serial number to pass the bike?

2, Does anyone know where the serial number actually is?

Cheers

No, you have the right number......1 number and 2 letters is the system that was used by Yamaha for many of it's domestic 250cc models......(both 2 stroke and 4 stroke)

29L 1983 RZ250R
3MA 1989-90 TZR250 (reverse cylinder)

These are just off my head.

These are 2 strokes, and these where exported as well, so occasionally you will find NZ new ones with numbers after, but you are less likely to find a Yamaha 250cc four cylinder with anything more than 3 prefix.

Only NZ and Aussie got these bikes as new (apart form Japan)

if it was a domestic market bike, then no suffix (numbers after), if is was for export, then it had suffix numbers...... most every single 4 cylinder 250 produced by Yamaha has only 3 prefix characters, as most of them where not exported (when they where new)

I found this when I just googled.

It may be a good idea to (politely) mention to tester that he may want to get some advise from Yamaha NZ.....this is nothing new.

thanks for the reply SS90, just what i need :):)
Ive run out of politeness with this particular VTNZ muppet, especially when he pretty much said my proof of ownership was unacceptable and the history of the bike was in doubt (nicked).

Last bike I put back on the road. Too much drama.

Turboduck did you read the thread about how to do it? If its not of interest to the police which they will put on their form then he can't refuse on those grounds. Hate to tell ya though--mr VTNZ man ain't gonna listen to ravings in a internnet forum.
Give me a call to sort this one out--I promise it'll be sorted
Incidently ss90 is correct jap domestic models do not have full engine numbers
