good Evening all, and Happy New year too all (bit late)
First off its awesome to see other motorcyclist stop and try to help if you have a problem, showing the love here! i love it,
Well, it started on Saturday, i have a 1989 CBR250 mc19 went to pak'n'save in Porirua and then rode to johnsonville, did my shopping jump on bike, for some reason the Battery was flat, didn't have enough power to start it, but i got someone to have a look and they jumped started it ......
two days ago, i brought a New Battery from motorad in tory street wellington, as the old one havnt been changed for about 5/6 years
the shop charged it from 9am when i brought i (i hope) and i picked it up going on to 4pm, the guy said ill need to put it on the charge but i didnt (is this the problem why it went flat)
got home put it in, and rode the next day to work and back home (Wellington to Tawa) brand new battery...
today, i rode to work and i was fine, rode home, i got to johnsonville back roads hitting into tawa, and then the bike just died, i couldn't jump start it as lol i didn't know how, when i turned on the key there was no power at all, if i walk it for a bit there was a little power. a few motorcyclist stopped by, and tried to jump-start it , it fired but wouldn't start................. got home 2hrs pushing it, and had a look at my terminals to see if they are rusty or something, they are still clean.... gave the battery a little charge and it starts perfect, then dies ... of course as its only a little charge
is it possible my battery is a dud?
i have no idea,

Stator, or something in the charging circuit is stuffed.

how can this happen? is it just something that can pop? whenever? i did the test for to check if it was the regulator-rectifier i was told if you rev your bike and your lights get brighter then you are fine which mine did..

Sounds like the charging circuit or regulator rectifier. Get hold of a manual for your bike and troubleshoot it. Do a search on KB as there are a lot of manuals on line. Check your fuses (doubtful if it's started once again) and connectors. Good luck let us know how it turns out.

take it back to where you bought the battery and have the battery tested and your bikes charging output checked
I have had a car battery do this but it was over a longer period of time
if that's too hard any specialist battery place or bike shop would be able to tell you what's wrong
good luck

Same thing happened to a 96 CBR400RR NC23 that a guy I used to know owned. I was riding it, and it just died. Tried to wind it over, battery was flat as hell. Ended up costing him around $300 to get the stator re-wound IIRC.

I'd start of following Squiggles trouble-shooter for the reg/rec. Exactly the same symptoms as my old MC19 had. You should be able to pick up a new aftermarket reg/rec for about $180 or so from a bike shop.

Reg/rec units on on a lot of Honda 250's and 400's were common to fail, replacing it with another just leaves you with the same potential problem. I workmate of mine bought one recently for his MC19 from a guy in Oz who makes replacement ones himself.

Take it to a workshop and get them to fully test the electrical system,I had that done when i bought my bike.
That will also give you peace of mind, knowing you won't get stranded again.

Thank you, for all the People that helped !!!!!! i would need a little more infomation, i would take it to a shop to get it looked at... but at this stage money is a issue.....................
anyways, alot of my plugs feel liked they unplugged abit i justr pull all the plugs out and clean'em inside and replug....
now, when i turn the bike on its at 12.3 volts.... when i RPM it to 2.500 its goes up 0.2 volts..
when i hit it at 5k RPM it goes up 0.4 or 0.5 volts....... is this normal? does this mean its charging again?

fully charged battery should read 12.7 volts 12.4 volts is only 75 percent charged

yip, it was 13+ volts when it was fully charged its just dropping so im going to replace the rectifier and stator at the same time,
i can get a cheap rectifier with free shipping from ebay for AU $32.99 that with heatsink attached..
Brand new, shops here are selling aftermarket for $250+ f** that... i just need a cheap new Stator there is nothing selling on ebay.

Wouldn't worry about your Stator.
The Reg Rect sounds like it was the problem.
They should poke out about 13.5 volts when you rev it... Not 12.9... Or 17 like i have heard of some doing...
Key to rectifying (no pun intended) problems is to Replace ONE componant at a time.
Otherwise you end up with an expencive item sitting in your toolbox that you don't know if it works or not....

thanks for that mate, yea i'll start with the rectifier first as i did notice there was corrosion white/blue color on the plug inside

Oh, yes, sorry I was going to comment on that too....
Corrosion on plugs is one of the best insulators in the world!!!
Give them a clean up with Scotch Brite and CRC CO Contact Cleaner (If you can afford it), and see how things go from there.
About ten years ago.... Wait, 15 years ago my 1987 CBR 400 had a lot of corroded plugs in it, and all hell broke loose with the electrics one day...
Yes, it went from going perfect, to indicators not flashing, horn dying and hard to start all in one day! It obviously just got to that point between weekend rides, and may not have helped that the last one was in the rain...
I digress....
I hope you get this sorted.

You really need someone to measure the current flowing - you cannot do this easily with a simple multimeter.
If you cannot spend money on it right now, I suggest you take the battery out, and take it back to the shop and ask them to charge it overnight for you. Tell them there is some charging problem, and you need the battery charged to help you check it. Perhaps they will not charge you for this.
Put the charged battery back in, measure its voltage first (should be 13V) and then start the bike. Battery voltage should remain over 13V. If it does not, then use the troubleshooter as above to find the problem.

Hi Steve, yea i charged the Battery overnight till it was full and tried it again today. the Battery was 13.25 volts... as i just charged my other one, that sits in the back under the seat away from metal Just in case it goes flat the other one, did a flow chart diagram to see if its the battery etc.... judging from what people are saying and what my tests are its outter my stator needs rewinding or replaced or my rectifier - i'm just going to replace my rectifier. first and retry again
but first i need to clean the plugs good first and see what happens

With the engine stopped, you can test ohms to ground on the yellow stator wires - you should have an open circuit to ground.
Also test with the engine at a high idle (3-4000rpm) you should have about 25-45 volts AC between any of the three yellow wires. Don't grab the wires coz you will get a healthy boot off them.
