View Full Version : Squealing relay

Latest symptom on my mates badly abused GN250 is that the relay that "switches on" the starter motor squeels when the starter button is pressed.

I figure either the wiring is (still too) dodgy, or the battery doesn't have enough grunt, so the relay is energising and then dying quickly. And by doing this quickly - on off on off ... - generates the squeeling sound.

Any other reasons why a relay will squeel? (Really does sound like there's a gerbil in it, and the starter circuit makes a needle poke it. Which may well be how a Chinese made GN250 is supposed to work.)

That happens when the connection to the battery is loose or faulty. The starter switch clicks the contactor in, which engages the starter motor, which loads the shonky connection to the battery real heavily so that the voltage to the contractor drops so much it cuts out, which disconnects the starter motor which removes the load so the voltage rises again and the contactor clicks back in, and so the cycle repeats - buzzzzzzz.

Sometimes it will also go click-click-click quite quickly.

Thanks.

Sounds like it's still a wiring issue then.

It's usually something as simple as a loose battery terminal.
