View Full Version : Why do you ride?

It's a drab dreary day down in the capital. The traffic was awful riding through Newland and down the Gorge. (Good fun chasing the GSXR400 that went past me down from Newlands though). My bike's parked up covered in road crap from following a semi down the Hutt M/Way. Cleaning time tonight. It's time to spend all day in front of the pc.

The kind of day that makes you wonder why you commute on/ride a bike. Which I did as I put my disc lock on and took my helmet off.

I think I ride because it make me scared enough to feel alive. Perhaps that sound strange but I just can't put it any other way. Even now it's still makes me feel 'nervy'(in a good way) pulling on my helmet and gloves every time time I ride.

I'm still a bit edgy after my off last November, and I was actually bl@#$y scared the first time I got back on the new bike (after the swelling had gone down enough in my left hand, and the holes in right hand from my pins had closed over enough to fit my loosest gloves on). But that five minute ride around the burbs was just magic.

Of course riding is probably the closest you can getting to flying while still being on terra firma, and all the rest of it, but I still think it's the way that it scares me enough and seems to heighten all the senses that keeps me on two wheels.

Enough of this mindless drivel from an old man. What makes you ride?

Dunno.

Because I can?
Because it's less boring than taking the bus?
Because I'm feeling in a REALLY shitty mood this morning, and riding with no restrictor in the Satantune makes a REALLLY evil sound that matches my mood?

Like I said: dunno.

Im addicted to my bike, get withdrawls after 2 days not riding lol.
Rather than waste money on booze on a sat night, id perfer to wake up early on a sunday and make the most of the day riding. Nothing better than to lean around the corners and power out listening to my Ducati motor roar lol bliss i tell ya absolute bliss :ride: :Punk:

Yeah,I reckon we are all reincarnated Spitfire or Me109 pilots needing the fix - gearing up,pulling the gloves on...the calm steel heart ready for the next battle,we are entering combat no two ways about it...

Riding is the best therapy there is. Once you become a biker you are always a biker. There's nothing like the freedom you feel when you're riding - an almost blissful state. You are using all of your senses, and every one of them is heightened. When you are one with your machine and the road it is the most amazing experience. There's nothing like a ride for dispelling a shitty mood and setting the world right again. I can't wait to get my cast off so I can get on my beast again.

As stated previously... because I can...

I have grown up in a place where bikes and bikers are a way of life.... It's in my blood, my Dad rode all his life... and so will I :ride:

Most of all the feeling that owning THE BEST LOOKING BIKE on the planet gives me.... A feeling of imense satisfaction...The noise it makes is truley adictive to me... and I could just look at it all day :D

I just love the freedom, and the feeling of being alone with my bike and "getting it right"... Pure joy....

I don't smoke

Do Drugs

Drink Alchohol

And even rarely touch tea/coffee/red bull/V

So I gotta do something right??

But actually I think I should stop riding as I feel I may have developed a problem.

*There I admitted it*

Ok where's the next meeting for Ride-o-holics Anonymous????

I think everyone so far has covered it for me. I love my bike, the feeling of being at one with the machine, the adrenalin buzz it gives me (on that note, for all of you that haven't done a track day, do it!! It will give you the biggest buzz :D )

I don't ride every day as I feel that would take away some of the excitment. I look forward to the ride outs at the weekend and meeting up with other bikers.

It is just one great package owning a bike :niceone: and always puts a smile on my face.

Have fun everyone

Why:

The enjoyment of riding (which only a bike rider knows)
Economics: cheaper to register and uses less fuel

I use the bike for work all the time, I'm not a fair weather rider, and I find it isn't a problem on the really wet days. I am no hero in the wet, the bike stays upright as much as possible.

Quote "Je pense donc je suis" - Rene Descartes
Quote "I ride therefore I am" - Me

Face it..
cars are boring,
require little or no skill
give no real pleasure
a pain to park
have too many wheels
bloody expensive if you want a fast one.
keep getting stuck in traffic
even though you sit in a car, you don't feel it is part of you.

Because it's the most fun you can have with your clothes on! Riding is so much fun it's a wonder it's not illegal. Hop on a bike and within minutes all your worries have faded and all that matters is the next corner and the rush that only being on a bike (or in a rally car!) gives you. :ride:

I also like the fact that not every woman rides so there is that slightly cool feeling when you take your helmet off and people realise you're a chick and not just some short bloke!

When we got married recently people asked my husband if he'd still be allowed to ride or would I make him stop. As if, we both love bikes and I bought my new bike on our honeymoon so I think his collection is pretty safe! :gob:

- It's FUN/Exciting/gives you a good rush or a buzz etc.
- It's A huge challenge, but progress is most satisfying.
- It brings people together who share a common hobby/interest/passion.
- It makes me feel special.

Marty :ride:

Are you sure a bike is cheaper to register? I pay litle over $100 for the car and about $130 for the bike

Anyways I ride because i like it, and it is cheaper than using the car. But since i got all the gear and the bike less than 2 months ago im still not seeing much benefits in the money saving department
the zxr is not realy faster than the car as far as i can tell but it is more fun and less costly to mess around on. eg. replace the bridgestones on the car 4x $289, no burnouts for me :msn-wink:

I love riding my bike because, I love riding my bike.

Other motorcyclists wave to you (sometimes).

There's always parking at the destination, and it's free too.

A sense of freedom.

Offers outstanding stress relief therapy.

Bike sounds are music.

Getting to destination is always thrilling and fun.

Riding all year round in all weather - bit scary with snow or ice on the road. Careful, steady now. Glad I don't have much power to burn on those days. Haven't dropped it.

What I don't like:

Hearing cage tyres skid extremely close behind. Duh!, why can't they spot that cage filled traffic queue I'm slowly down for!? (nearly got rear ended two days ago).

All cage drivers assume bike = speedster. Stop tailgating me!

Number one for me would be enjoyment! Major benefits like saving time and gas money come a distant second! :ride:

Would you ask a painter why he paints? A writer why he writes?

Of course not. Why? Because we all know they have no choice.

And neither do I. It's an obsession, a compulsion. It took me 26 years to get my first bike, only lasted 3 months, and will take me at least another year to get another one.

I have to do it though. I can mention any of the above excuses, it's fun, theroputic(sp?), cheaper, etc, but at the end of the day they're just that.

True there are things that could cause me to not get a new bike, no money, personal circumstances, or injury. But as far as I'm concerned I'll always be a biker.

I ride because I used to ride when I was much younger and I'm trying to re-capture my youth. (Hey, my brother bought an MG for his mid-life crisis)

I ride because it's a whole lot more fun than going on the buses.

I ride because it's cheaper than taking the car or the bus. (yeah OK, forget the insurance and rego and the cost of actually buying 'the beast')

I ride because my wife says I can (and she likes it on the back toodling along at about 4500 rpm in 4th because there's a certain vibration just at that spot that she finds rather pleasant).

I ride because it makes me different to so many other road users but at the same time gives me a feeling of brothership when I see another biker.

Riding suits and enhances my life

Yep all of that as well, but especially because SWMBO says it's all right. She won't go on the back of the bike like in the old days though. Perhaps I should remind her about that 4500 rpm. Hmmm.

I ride because it's the best way to journey

I ride to work because it's another reason to ride

I ride to see places I haven't seen before and revisit places I have

I ride to share the road with other riders, alone yet together

I ride because my V-rod is a work of art, it's never finished, but I take it out to show it off between custom brush-strokes

I ride because riding is one of the best ways to stay focussed, concentrated and to be able to 'enjoy the moment' for hours at a time

I ride because it requires skill and study to ride well

I ride because every now and then it scares me

I ride because only when I stop riding will I start to feel old

We like the TT however it's also very nice when everyone has gone and we get our roads back.....some people just take the piss during the week, and as they mostly do not know the course, it can be somewhat dangerous out there..
