Totally gutted. Allan always came looking for me when he had trouble with the sidecar because i was the mechanic on it years ago when Scrivy owned it.
Sunday as usual, he comes over to our camp, & there we were happily bleeding the cooling system & balancing the carbs on his machine.
Great bloke & always so grateful for a hand.

Just like to say a big thanks to all the ambulance crews that had to do a shite load of work yesterday.
A totally thankless task (I know they're paid to do it), but never the less, a big thanks from me for your efforts.

Big condolences to the sidecar community.

Truely gutting when a member of your 'family' pays the big price for simply having fun...........................................

and doing nothing different than what we all do.

We will all miss your enthusiasm Allan.

I'm absolutely gutted by this news. Only met them a few times but thought they were a top bunch. I was more worried about Shona, knowing she's getting married soon and I naively thought the swinger'ss job was more dangerous. I just assumed Allan would be okay.
If anyone has Luke's #, could you let me know via PM, as I'd like to be able to help out if possible and I doubt he'll be logging on here.

Alan was a nice guy, I can member talking to him at Manfeild just before he bought the outfit and how Shona was getting a hard time about needing to eat more pies, I last talked to him at Wanganui where he was enjoying himself out with the classics and was gutted to hear the news about him

RIP Allan, did our best for you mate, sorry we couldn't have done anything more. RIP

I certainly appreciate all you guys (and girls) do for us, thanks for your efforts

I cant believe reading this thread about Alan, my heart has just dropped to the ground. He was truely a Great person to have met and known in such a short time and he never hesitated in helping me out up at Taupo with kick starting the RG for me when my partner was out on the track and couldn't do so.
My heart goes out to Shona (Huge Hug to you), his wife, Luke and to the rest of his Family and friends and also to the New Zealand Sidecar Association on the Very Sad Loss of a True Gentleman.
May you RIP Alan and my memories of you and your generosity I will cherish.

A man I did not know , but knew most of those who worked tirelessly that day to do their best for him.
My condolences to his Family , If theres anyone I want trying to save my life it would be those of the St John Motorsport Team because I know of the commitment, dedication and Professionalism that goes into that team.(Actually it can be said that our Ambulance service is one of the best in the world, just hugely underfunded and overworked)
Even though I wasn't there we were getting updates throughout the day(thanks Toot Toot) as to what was happening and it sounds like you all put on a hell of a show.
A truly Sad end to what must have been an exciting days racing.

My name is Luke and Alan was my father in law to be, Shona my fiancee.

As I type this I am sitting with Shona and her mother Judith,

Thank you all so very much for your kind words during this hard time,
they are muchly appreciated.

To all the medics that helped with Alan thank you for everything you did.

Anyone that came into contact with Alan would certainly remember him , he was such a great man and would just love to chat to anyone about the sport he loved so much.

Shona is fine just a bit of bruising and a broken heart.

As tragic as this is we know he went doing what he loved.
Allan will be missed greatly.

Once again many thanks for your kind words

Luke

R.I.P Alan

On behalf of the Satherley family, our heartfelt thanks to all who have expressed their condolences on this and other websites. Sadly, on Alan's trip to the stars, he leaves behind his loving wife Judy, much, much loved kids Shona, (born on Alans birthday), son Scott, son-in-law-to-be Luke, sisters Jan, Vicki and Jo, brother Kim and father Driv Those of you close to Al would know that he lost his youngest brother Jon just 2 years ago, ( also a bike fan). Anyone who knows Al will attest to his genuine willingness to help any and all, his beaming smile, infectious good humour, and dedication to his family. He truly is a shining star to our family and friends.
He spoke to me about this website, and the friends he had here and yes, he did pass doing what he loved. He started on chair bikes at Western Springs in his teens, (yes, he was the swinger then), Lance was his rider, and even then, he was one of the most careful competitors on any track he has been on.
Funeral notices will be in tomorrows Herald, ( Tuesday 23rd Feb )........ Quite simply, he leaves an absolutely unfillable gap in the lives of all he touched......... i am honored to call him my brother.......... i love ya Al.......................kim

I had the pleasure of meeting Alan and Shona at the "have a go day" last November. Ever since then when ever I saw Alan at the track he always had a huge smile and in the end he started calling me or shouting across the pits "blondie". He always had a wee story to tell to me it was an absolute delight to see him and Shona at the track. My memories (even tho they were are only of a few months) of Alan are always happy ones & this is such a sad loss to the sport........RIP Alan your smile will be missed.

Shona, big  to you chick, stay strong it won't be easy and many tears will be shed. Our thoughts are with you and your family take care xo

Such sad news to hear from over the ditch. The sidecar community is small so I know the guys & gals here will be wanting to send their condolences to Alan's family & his many friends & fans.
I know next time I get to go out it will be with renewed respect for my rider & fellow crews.

I also want to send a big  to all the fans who were there on the day. You are in my thoughts too.

Sidecar Bob and I will be going to the funeral. We have both decided to donate our Paeroa prizemoney (in lieu of flowers), as the family would prefer donations to the Helicopter Rescue Trust in Alan's memory.
We both encourage other sidecar competitors to do the same. Who knows, we may also need their services one day.
I will be taking the funds to the funeral in an envelope.
