The recently introduced Daylight Saving Tuesday Rides will have a brief report here in this thread until the end of daylight saving.

Tuesdays – February 2010
9th Harbour and Bays via SH2 to Ngauranga/Caltex Hutt Road then follow harbour around bays Oriental/Shelly/Scorching/Worser etc to Owhiro Bay and back up Happy Valley Road to Brooklyn (optional turnaround at Seatoun back through Seatoun Tunnel)
Done - Seven Riders calm evening around the harbour.

16th Wainuiomata Coast/Eastbourne (optional turnaround in Wainuiomata and onto Eastbourne)
Done - Fifteen Riders no wind over the hill and out to the coast. A spectacular sunset on the ride home from Eastbourne.

23 Feb Makara
Done - 18 riders attended. The gathering split into two groups each with designated leader and tail end on leaving Caltex for Karori then onto Makara and Johnsonville. I noted a few things that I can improve upon at the ride brief, in particular more detail about directions to first gathering staging point and also that number two in the group understands instruction to be intersection staging point marshal when a significant turn (left or right) occurs so riders do not stray from route. And Milts don't worry that you may have lost your group behind, the TEC was busy rounding up. A good point for lead riders too and riders in the line to ensure you have the rider behind in your mirror back down the road. Thanks to Toaster, Hawkeye and Milts for your assistance on the ride.

2nd March Paraparaumu via Greys Road (optional turnaround at Paekakariki)
Done - Well the weather was looking suspect - long story short only had a very light shower spray for a few minutes when leaving Waterfront Bar & Kitchen on the beach at Raumati. I was the thorn between two roses (Katiepie and Ratti) departing the Duckpond, and it was a pleasant ride over the Paekakariki Hill. As there were only the three of us this evening we were in agreement to vary the route and do the hill at a very sedate pace. Ratti wasn't sure what I was doing sticking my left leg out as we were approaching a cyclist - I reminded her of a lady rider that I once saw stick her left hand out to... well....won't go there:yes:

An observation on tonights ride was counting off your following distance '1000 and 1, 1000 and 2, 1000 and 3' and whether you choose to ride single file or staggered on the motorway. :scooter::scooter::scooter:

9th March Harbour and Bays – via SH2 to Ngauranga/Caltex Hutt Road to Brooklyn Happy Valley Road and follow coastline back into harbour.
Done - All up 15 bikes did the ride all the way around the harbour and bays, with a final destination, the BackBencher in Molesworth Street.
The very interesting thing was I think the 250cc bikes were in the minority - six or seven. I commented before we left the duckpond that a few of the larger bikes may be struggling and around Shelley Bay one Ducati needed to go open up a little up and down the road near the airport back up to 70kph to cool down. The gravel leading around to Shelley Bay and just afterwards, my apologies I did not do a preliminary ride of the route this week, however all in all that was rather mild surface and the novice riders handled it okay.
The evening sunset across the Cook Strait was a wonderful sight, and relatively calm weather (my wife, Moira, took her parents into town and bays at lunch time and came back and said it was quite windy) made for an enjoyable ride.
Thank you Cam for leading from Happy Valley, and to RevDJ for riding tail along the way. The view from the back leading back around the bays and airport reminded me of a centipede weaving along.
There were quite a few new faces on the ride, I hope you enjoyed it, and there are only a three Tuesday rides left this daylight saving season. Look forward to your company again.
Sitting in the BackBencher, I thought I felt a tremour, but thought 'Nah relax Guy - you are sitting across the road from New Zealand's Parliament House. Being an Aussie you do notice these things.'
Tonight the Alternative Wednesday Ride takes in the Paekakariki Hill and back to Mana, and this Saturday will be a morning ride to Wainui Coast as a preliminary to next Tuesday 16th March ride out to the coast.

16th Wainuiomata Coast/Eastbourne

Well daylight season is nearly over and must be on everybody’s mind that the mid week evening rides will soon becoming to an end for another six months.

As remarked in the forum, these rides have provided opportunity for novice 250cc riders, and others, to come out for a ‘slower’ ride. With the assistance of Cam and Eugene (thank you guys) over these past six weeks, I trust this has been a worthwhile weekly event for all that have attended.

Last night (Tuesday) another 16 riders were at the duckpond for the ride over to the coast. With the sun setting, the breakers coming in, and the wind blowing spray off the wave tops, it was a very pretty site. And being an ex-navy man a bit of salt is good for you.

Next Wednesday will be the penultimate Tuesday Ride. The programmed ride takes us from the Duckpond over the Haywards down SH1 to Johnsonville and then out to Makara. My thoughts are to take the ride only as far as Makara Beach and then return to the Inn at Johnsonville, that we have been to previously.

As briefly mentioned last night there may be ‘An End Of Daylight Saving Sunday Ride on 28th March' and this can be finalised next Tuesday evening. I will put up a few suggestions in the Tuesday forum thread shortly.

Finally, Tueday 30th March, this will be a short 30 minute ride to a ‘food destination - particularly for those who enjoy garlic aroma in their helmet’ and an opportunity to talk about the rides program just completed and generally to look ahead through winter and whatever weekend rides you may want to arrange between yourselves – and by all means use the KB Calendar and Forums.

I expect that the ‘glowing green machine’ will be roaming other pastures, and I will be roaming the golf course these winter weekends around midday of course.

Ride Safe and Enjoy

23rd March Makara - STOP PRESS NOTE FROM BUCKBUCK#1
Well I am glad to read in the forum that you all had a good ride out to Makara and back to Karori and down to Thorndon. As you are all aware now the Kawasaki Green Machine is in another pasture, and pleased to say purchased by a novice rider.

Look forward to meeting up with you all for the meal destination ride next Tuesday for the final end of daylight season ride.

Footnote:
At the ride briefing I specifically state that although I am Ride Co-Ordinator, I am neither a professional motorcycle rider nor instructor. There is no mentoring role other than ensuring a lead rider and tail end rider are designated, and that the pace is geared toward the slower 250cc novice rider. Senior and experienced riders of all sized bikes are welcomed and encouraged to attend. Each week I will make a preliminary riding safety announcement and then pass the torch to one of the attending riders to explain the riding event for the evening.
