i dont know if it's a national problem but i have noticed a number of scooter riders around christchurch using cycle lanes recently. am i just too much of a grumpy old bastard or is this really annoying?
then again i suppose it at least means theyre out of the traffic and not slowing everybody else down as they tend to be travelling about 30kmh

I don't stay behind them,I overtake em...:p That's on the scooter of course. Wouldn't go in the cycle lanes on the bike.

Pfffft, I wish scooters were allowed in cycle lanes, at least I could head up the side of the North Western from Pt Chev. to Lincoln Rd then. Save me going all the fuck away around Gt. North Rd.
Come to think of it, is there any other class of transport that *can't* use that NW route. Every other vehicle can use the motorway, and peds and cyclists can use the cycle way. Hmph I feel discriminated against, off to the human rights commissioner! :scooter:

There is a scooter going down the cycle lane on the north western. He starts a western springs and comes out at Henderson. I know he is on borrowed time with that one.
You can filter the motorway in the mornings with a moped if its crawling, its worth it just for the reactions of bikers :gob: just peel off if its starting to flow faster than 70kph. .
The only thing the police will question you for is if your holding up traffic or riding in a dangerous manner.

I ride my TR50 along the cycle ways from cenral park drive right into western springs on occasions. I am extra cautious and always slow or stop to let cyclist thru where it's narrow. I've never even been looked at by police and other users of the cycle lanes don't seem to mind. To my knowledge you can use them provided they are not a footpath. I don't know that for sure but beats going the long way round! It's all about sharing!:innocent:

I thought it was a $150 fine if you rode in the cycle lane.

Happy to be corrected but I'm pretty sure you can't use that lane. It's a shared cycle/pedestrian path. Having said that, I used to see heaps of scoots use it when I was driving to work a year ago. Maybe it's a case of don't be stupid and you'll be left alone.
$150, that's nearly 4 months petrol lol.

I once got held up behind a scooter on my bicycle going down the cycle/foot path on the Centenal Highway south bound (down the steep hill). Although this was 3 years ago, sometimes you get the odd walker going down there. It's a bit of a challenge getting a bicycle around a walker, so I don't know what this guy was going to do if he caught a walker.
It's a battle out there on the daily commute, you follow the rules you get to work late.

I use the cycle lanes sometimes, and the footpath, and a pedestrian underpass. There is also a private motel driveway that I have used in the past, but that feels a bit cheeky... Whatever it takes to "make progress". We don't buy scootahs to sit in a line of traffic...
The footpath thing has been required almost daily of late and I'm getting nervous about some frustrated cager ringing *555 to have a whinge.

I see scooters on the side of the motorway quite regularly.
The main drawbacks are:
1. Glass from car accidents that get swept onto the cycle lane. The emergency response people seem to think that sweeping glass onto the cycle lane is a sensible option...
2. The width of the bridge at the boat club is minimal. Check the width of your bike!

Those bridges are shockers aren't they! That rubber/tread/whatever-it-is layer they put on is awful, and the one up near Lincoln Road covered in chicken wire is diabolical in winter, slippery as hell. (I used to cycle to work from Ranui to Parnell)

Kewl word "diabolical"
With moped class scooters if your shoulders fit the gap, everything else will.
