sure its been asked before but caint find it in here:blink:, also need the post numbers:Punk:, anyway today going down the motorway following another motorcycle went past a van with a camera in it,( parked over a crest near munukau) i was doin bout 115, now i manage to see back of van but did not see a big flash from camera but im sure i saw 2 small flashes  we both slowed down and then the other bike must have desided i was to slow (i doin 108) he took off like a flash never to be seen again.any way if the camera did flash me can i get ticketed as number plate is at back of bike not front. not hoping i can get of tickets so i can speed tho. havint had a ticket for over 8 or 9 years. :scooter: but with this new bike of mine i have to be sooo strict with my speed so i dont get a ticket, i like it when other bikes catch me up and ride with me but then they seem to just want to speed off, which im not willing to do as caint afford to get done.( even tho sumtimes speed gets better of me) this is my story lol.

Give 'em the "Chinese Good Luck Sign" as you go past at 120...

I've read on KB that the guy in the Van, if he wants, can write down your plate as you ride past; presumably to match up with the pic.
Sounds a bit dodgy to me though (enforceable?) ... and no idea if it's myth or fact.

Is the guy in the van actually a cop?

I believe they are civilians operating under a warrant or some such legal instruction. But at the end of the day, they are only taking photos, so I doubt they even need a warrant.

But if you take the piss and start flying through speed cameras because of this there will come a time when the Police will decide to look for you and your distinctive bike, helmet, clothing etc.
And if enough people start fanging through at 140km/h while giving the finger we will soon have frontal registration, something I suspect we will be getting in the not too distant future anyway.

Are they? Isn't the whole operation automated? Doesn't the"Operator" just drive the van from one place to another, set up the camera and go to sleep/ read the paper etc?

Really? Is that just a personal opinion or have you read that somewhere? Link?
That would totally suck, good way to totally destroy the asthetics of every single motorbike.
Why not medium/long range RFID's Like a digital number plate.

Personal opinion. But opinion based on reading overseas research looking at how to have frontal registration without ruining the aesthetics or aerodynamics, or introducing a safety hazard, and several years working in the industry in the UK and NZ. While it is more an issue to do with electronic tolling, which we don't have to the same extent as other countries, and digital speed enforcement used in places like the UK, I have heard it talked about over here. Once it happens overseas then I imagine, my personal opinion only, that NZ will follow.

AFAIK, the camera can be manually triggered if a vehicle is traveling above its speed limit, ie 90km/h for trucks and vehicles towing trailers. More often than not though the operator seems to be reading a book or jazz mag.

unfortunately incorrect

correct, but only if he's awake enough to catch it (apparently very rarely)
they can also manually snap your pic for not wearing a seatbelt, and i'm assuming the same also goes for cellphones now aswell (obviously in your car of course)

Oh so wrong.........
Yes, you can't be ticketed via the normal system, but if the operator is awake and takes your number, they can chase you up that way.
They normally only do it for high speeds, but nothing says they can't do it for any speed.
Funny case. A tosser in Chch got snapped at 105 on Bealey Ave. Predictably the operator took the number. The plonker was wearing the same jacket and helmet when the gendarmes found him 3 days later. Got charged with Dangerous Driving, 6 month walk and a fine.

not necessarily, We stiil have to obey the dumbest give way rule in the world when turning left even though every other country in the world has abandoned it. You would be surprised how bloody mindedly stupid the NZ government can be.

We have the best, most logical & practical give way rule in the world, if used properly it allows for maximum traffic flow & least amount of congestion, the problem is NZ drivers increasingly get more & more useless at intersections & merging (well driving in general really), however you are right about the NZ Govt

So what are the operational guidelines? I would have thought that an automatic system would not require much setting up.

I agree. The real problem lies with the words "if used properly". Road rules do work to keep order and both versions of that give way rule essentially work okay. But it's the drivers being muppets that screw it up.
Another is the merge like a zip proceedure. Yeah right.... how many times have people here seen a vehicle come to a complete stop in the left merge lane when they could have easily just sped up and merged in with the traffic flow.

It took me the longest time to come to terms with that rule, it is counter-intuative but on reflection it is actually quite a good rule. I reckon it would cost a small fortune to change the rule now, threr are no end of intersectons actually engineered (with signage etc) to accomodate it.
It's actually no different to what happens at a roundabout (just missing the traffic island is all)

Its not wrong as that is not what the op was asking
yes technically if it is a cop in the van and he is doing his job you can be charged but as you said not via the normal system
its always possible as ther could be a cop walking past who decides your driving is worth reporting. Any joe public can also report you and sometimes that goes to court

reminds me of the front page of the newspaper when I was living in cairns, was a speed camera photo of a guy on a zx12r doing 240 apparently in an 80k area, the police were asking for the publics help in finding him, description... green zx12r, black leather jacket and a black helmet.... good luck:lol:
