From the flyer....

Coaching by Karel Pavich and her assistant coaches
Karel has been riding motorcycles on the road, racetrack and off road for over 30 years. In 2006 she became NZ’s first woman to win a NZ Road Racing championship. Today she still competes in Australasia, successfully racing modern, classic and post classic machinery. She also competes in Vintage MX, is a Ulysses Nelson member and rides her Triumph motorcycle on the road. Karel is keen to share the depth of passion, skills & experience she has had for “two wheeling” since she was a teenager. She knows that motorcycling has its risks, and her aim is help riders minimise their risks so they can become safer, more competent riders on the road. Karel is an NZTA Approved Instructor
Who is this day suitable for?
This is a training day for women riders. The purpose of this day is to LEARN more about your riding & your bikes capabilities so you can become a safer, more conscious rider. The day is geared for all levels of women road riders. A high level of enjoyment guaranteed!
How much experience do I need?
Suited to riders of ANY experience. Regardless of whether you are new to riding, still on L plates or have been riding for decades, you will gain valuable experience from this day. In a safe & controlled environment, you will learn more about the fundamentals of riding - braking, cornering & steering.
Do I have to go fast?
No, we want you to come along and have some fun with your bike and your mates. This day is just for the girls & it is purely about enhancing your own level of competence on your bike. This will suit you regardless of what size/type bike you own. If it’s the bike you ride on the road, then its suitable.
COST - $125 full day at the track. 9am – 4.30pm
The track will be exclusively yours for the day. Numbers are strictly limited.

Go to www.prorider.co.nz for details

Thinking about going. Done the trip to Taupo on my 250 once and would love to do it again (from Wellington). But think I would be well out of place on my cruiser on this course. I know it says any bike, but I imagine there will be plenty of sports bikes as it seems more fitting.

Still.. an excuse for a solo road trip, meet some more great female riders, and a fantastic training day on offer.. pretty damn tempting.

Would any welly girls be keen to go?

I was thinking of going but after talking to the guys on the weekend it sounded like the manfield things are more of a racing thing... testing out how fast you can take your bike etc... although this doesnt sound the same to me.... might go to the website and see if there is anymore detail.
going to martinborough and up to palmy and back to otaki is as far as i have gone to date.
How did your 250 do all the way to Taupo Katiepie

It coped, rather slow but it coped. Going to Auckland at Easter on my own. That ones going to be a loooong trip!

Yeah that was my thoughts on the training. It seems that it really may not be for the type of bikes that we have. mmmm hopefully we are wrong?

It says "This will suit you regardless of what size/type bike you own. If it’s the bike you ride on the road, then its suitable" so should be fine for you guys Katiepie and dragon_fly. I'm thinking about going too, if so would be keen to ride up in a group.

It's for every type of rider, as long as the bike can be ridden on the road and you don't have a willy.

I am taking my yamaha serow dual purpose and it is apparently fine!

Squirrell, you don't happen to know if they're looking at doing one further up the island at some stage? (i.e. Pukekohe, Hampdon Downs, Taupo)?
I'll have to see how the month progresses finance wise.
Any other females from Auckland thinking of going? Not even sure how long it'll take to get down there, but thinking riding down Monday and ride back Wednesday if going to do it.

DF - its a training day as opposed to a track day which is more about going fast. Karel has a lifetime of experience to share with us. I have enrolled and would love some other riders to be involved. katie - you handled your bike extremely well on Sunday and you would be just fine on the training day. DO IT chickies!

This is definitely a training day, I am an absolute newbie, haven't gone over 70 kph yet but I am doing the course!!!!
Hope to see as many of you as possible there, it is great value and a great opportunity to have the track to ourselves.

At this stage she doesn't have any plans for a course further north (bugger) - for those who are still sitting on the fence like me (and up the island a bit further).
I'll have to think a bit longer on this, as I'm keen just not sure it's feasible.

I've had a couple of lessons with her and the skills i've learnt are invalueble.

I've been given permission by my boss to go, but he's concerned as it's a big ride down there.
If anyone from Auckland is seriously thinking of going, can you send me a PM (or email). I'd like to go for a ride with you to figure if we can ride the distance together/in a small group.
I ride a 250 because I like it, I don't do fast, but don't want to go 70kph either (however, if a learner is looking at going, I'd be happy to ride with you, but meeting at the end of the southern motorway - 70kph is bloody dangerous along there).
Cheers, Michelle

Right. I am keen as mustard. Just trying to figure out the whole taking time off work thing. I was planning on riding from Wellington up to Auckland on that Thursday before Easter anyone which only involved one day off, but am now working on taking the entire week off to be able to do this.

Would head up from Welly on the Monday, then carry on up to Auckland on the Wednesday. Might be nice to be able to ride with a group from wellington, then a group returning to Auckland. Will only be on my 250 aswell which is SLOW on the hills, but I'm sure a few of us would be in the same boat.

Mmmmm now to sweet talk the boss - is the busiest month of the year!

I will probable end up staying the night up that way as I'm going to continue straight to Auckland the next day. Not sure though if I'll go up the day before of early that morning. Will have my luggage with me. Hopefully somewhere to off load that.

Anyone from Auckland going to go aswell? I would love some company heading up that way on the Wednesday?

I booked in earlier today for the course, but not heard anything from Karel yet. I did notice her emails yesterday went into the spam folder, but am sure that when I emptied it today there was nothing.

State insurance wont cover me to do this training day;

Use of the vehicle
You’re not covered when the vehicle is being used:
1. to carry fare-paying passengers or for hire, or
2. to practice for or take part in any race, rally, pace-making,
reliability trial or speed test, or
3. on any racetrack.

THis is a massive massive blow as i was looking forward to this training day for my ability and my confidence and because the other training i wanted to do was in wellington at the ridesafe or whatever but i dont have enough confidence to ride from palmy to wellington yet. i am SO fucked off

bert_is_evil
5th March 2010, 08:28
That sucks danielle! State insurance bites, cheaper premiums but their policy wordings are stitched up so tightly they barely ever have to pay out. Pack up your bike and move yourself to another company - you definitely get what you pay for with insurance eh. You could probably get a new policy set up in time for the training day.

Yeah, im going to ring state insurance again today and try to sort things out because i dont think my message was told correctly by the guy i was dealing with to the underwriter, and if that doesn't work i will definitly be changing insurers. Becoming a lower risk rider and gaining confidence is my number one priority and i wont let some stupid insurance company try and stop me.

Hi Danielle, definately follow up and reiterate to State, that its not a track day, but a TRAINING day. Absolutely no racing or anything similar involved. Good luck

Give NAC Insurance a call, I'm covered for track and training days, it just doubles my excess. It pays to shop around.

Man, I am confused. I just got off the phone with NAC (my policy holder) and they said NO- we don't cover on race tracks as the risk is too great. I asked if they would do so with increased excess and the answer was still NO. Do I follow up with another call, or just see what a one day cover from someone else would cost?

Hmm that sounds dodgy! I think half the people that work at these companies don't know what all the different entitlements are. I have had my good bike at a trackday before and i just had to ring NAC with the date that my bike was goin to be on the track. Do you have full insurance? I shall check out my booklets later tonight and let you know what it says Okey.

Thanks, kit. The guy I spoke to didn't sound too interested- Friday afternoon and all. I have "Elite" coverage, but page 6 of the boklet says (just like State Insurance mentioned earlier) You are not covered when the vehicle is being used:... 4. on any racetrack.

I may ask prorider directly and see if they have any experience with this situation, as they run the training. Cheers again for your help!

This is one of my main reasons for dropping them for covering my bike in favour of Kiwibike (www.kiwibike.co.nz)
Also, the very slack attitude from their staff when making changes to my other policies means I'll probably be dropping them all together very shortly.

UPDATE: I spoke to a different person on my second call to NAC and she said it would be no trouble to arrange the coverage, just means doubling the excess, as kit stated earlier. I guess not all the salespeople are equally knowledgable.

My insurer (Swann) came back to me this afternoon and have approved cover for me for the Track Day, no problems. I insured the bike through Kiwibike. If you are having problems you do have time to find an insurer that will cover you - most will cover you on the spot.
I have booked, I have paid, I am insured - now all I need to do is get there!!!!!!!!

I am also with NAC, and contacted them by email. Provided them with the website details, and they confirmed to me in writing that yes I would have cover, with a double excess. I know that Protecta and Star also do Track/Training days on a case by case basis. A day like this should be no issue, for most insurers

If anyone has hassles, PM me. I will reply with my work email, so you can send me your details, then I can get quotes for you (what I do for a crust).

What do we need to wear in regards safety gear?

Do we need back protectors (I don't wear one on the road, so would rather get one sooner than later if I need one for this course).

Cordura pants okay? (I'll be good and put the knee guards back in) - these should zip to my leather jacket, I'm thinking.

Quick clip helmet okay or do I need d-rings? (I have one of each, but use the quick clip as a commuter/main helmet).

Basically, I don't want to ride down and find out I should've worn/bought something else.

from the flyer...

RIDING GEAR
Wear what you feel safe and comfortable riding in
An approved full helmet that fits well with a clean, clear visor
Leather gloves, motorcycle boots, 1 or 2 piece riding suit - leather or cordura.
A back protector is recommended but not compulsory

YOUR MOTORCYCLE

If you ride it on the road, then your bike is suitable for this training day. As long as its safe and road worthy, then all we do is tape over our headlight, mirrors and indicators for the day. Luggage or top boxes are OK too, if you usually ride with them on your bike, then it will more closely simulates your real riding conditions and you can leave them on if you choose.

To any of the biker angels out there thinking twice about signing up for the training day in May - absolutely without a doubt you have to go and do the training. I went to the Manfeild day and can say that even with around 18 years riding experience I still learned new skills to keep me safe on the road. I totally recommend for all riders, whether on their learners or been riding for years. It is a day that is run to your experience level, they don't put you through anything you wouldn't have to do on the road.

Highly recommended course - and what's best is it was taken by a woman for women, she speaks the language if you get the drift. Go and enjoy and get the message out there that this day is worth every cent.

Totally agree CnC - it was the most amazing day. I learnt so much in a safe environment. Like you, been riding forever, but learnt heaps and recommend all riders go and do this. Karel and her team made it so easy for us to learn. Read my report here - http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/121140-Smiling-Faces?p=1129702211#post1129702211

Yep - GREAT photos ladies. Can't wait to get the ones I purchase. Wow - some of you sure had a great lean on! It seems I didn't get anywhere near as far over as I thought I had (or felt I had)

Looking at the numbering of the photos, I think he may have taken many more, but selected the best of the bunch. I remember him on the first corner out of the pit where I scrapped my foot pegs, but can't find the photo. Oh well, there are some fab shots and great to have a record of such an incredible day. You still smiling about it?
