so, about 6 weeks ago I had a spill on my ZZR, it was a write of and after much stuffing around with the insurance they finally paid up, I bought a new (to me) bike last weekend, and on Friday me and my wife took off for the weekend to pick it up from new Plymouth.
what a weekend for it, blue sky everywhere, after spending the night in Wanganui (freekin cliff Richards meant that new Plymouth was booked out) we got to new Plymouth and I picked her up, I was rapped, the add had said "cosmetically not the best" and all it was, was a couple of runs in the paint, it only took me a five minute test ride to get the confidence that I had lost after the accident back, and soon I was riding on the open road, bathing in the sunshine and heading back to Wanganui, the bike was humming along, it didn't miss a beat.

Just south of Harwera I came across a car on the side of the road, I could see there was a lady with her kid sitting in the car in the middle of nowhere so I pulled in behind them to see if they needed any help, turned out they had a flat tyre and their wheel brace didn't fit the wheels on their car:slap:, so I waited for the wife to turn up with my socket set and whipped the wheel off, not a prob, grabbed the spare from their boot and went to put it on, turns out the spare doesn’t fit their car either.:slap:

well I didn't want to leave them stranded there (no cell coverage on this part of the road) so I put the flat tyre back on and told her to move it of the edge of the road so it didn't get hit, and my wife would run them to hawera so they could sort it out, the lady was grateful for the help, she jumped in her car, started it up, stuck it in reverse and promptly BACKED THE FUCK OVER MY BIKE:angry2:

long story short, turns out, no insurance, no license, no money. I fully insured the bike before picking it up but now I’m out $700 in excess till the insurance sorts it out with her.

The moral of the story? From now on I will not stop for cars on the side of the road!!!

The only bright side to my day was the fact that every 1 of the 15 sport bikes that passed me stopped to see if I was ok (no thanks for the group of cruisers that didn't even slow down as they sped past literally inches from me and the bike scaring the shit out of me) and I owe a huge thanks to "repsol rider" who said he was a KBer, for stopping, then taking an hour of his time to go get his van, come back to get my bike and take it back to his place, where it would be safe while I hunted for parts to get it ridable so I could get it back to wellington, then he let me use his garage at 11pm and helped me fix it even though he had to work at 5am.
You're a legend mate, and if I can ever return the favour I owe you big time

Man, that sux!! Hope you're not left out of pocket for being a good samaritan. How does someone have a spare tyre that doesn't fit their car? I was waiting for you to say that the car was a stolen gang member's car or summat.
Hope you're back on the road ASAP.

do ya think they'll write it off and you're going to have to start looking over again? sounded like such a sweet bike/deal too......

Ah that sucks Laxi , hope you get it all sorted out. I know it's a bit late , but as a rule always stop ahead of the car you intend helping on a motorway. Provides your bike and you with more protection by forming a barrier and a car is earsier to see than a relatively smaller bike.

, but as a rule always stop ahead of the car you intend helping on a motorway.

I know and usually I would have but my wife had pulled her car in behind me, so I was between cars.
she "couldn't find the brake" and traveled quite a distance and hit the bike on the front wheel, which pushed the bike over and dragged it a bit.
We were just lucky it didn,t bend the wheel or forks, and that she didn,t keep going into my wifes car too.

Shit, did she even have a drivers license(ah thats right she didn't have one)? What a stupid iresponsble person , must of really pissed you off. You did well , I would have given up at the "got the wrong spare wheel part" and just given them a lift to the nearest service station. I often stop and help others if I can but people have to take some personal responsibility for themselves to.

Gotta love how people like this are on the road.
Did you check the front of the car. The flat was probably caused 6 year old she ran over earlier.

As they say, you will get your reward in heaven!

What a dumb freaking woman, she shouldn't own a bloody car, let alone drive one!

I must remember never to park close to anyone in distress, it's probably why they are in distress in the first place!

Good on you anyway!

That is a real bummer. Hopefully she'll be able to sell the car so she can cover you $700 excess. As a matter of fact, your insurance shouldn't even charge you the excess - you were not in anyway in fault in this accident.

The morale of the story: ...

This is why it's illegal for women to drive.

Dammit, you pretty much stole my line.

the problem is until she accepts responsibility (or has it legally forced on her), I have to pay the excess, and they reimburse me (probably after a long drawn out process).
then there's the fact the insurance company will just write the bike off, and I only had 1 written of recently, I was kind hoping to keep this 1 a bit longer

A proper insurance company isn't going to charge the excess up front. You report the accident, they take it from there. Since she is clearly in the wrong you shouldn't have to pay any excess and your premium should not be affected either.

It's a clear cut case since you weren't even on the bike at the time of the accident. Recouping their expenses from her is going to be the insurance company's headache - that's what you are paying your premiums for.

Laxi
1st March 2010, 15:35
in a perfect world that would be true, but I learnt a couple of years ago, insurance companys cover their own arses. I had a pedestrian run in front of me when I was driving the car, and even though the police found it wasn't my fault, the insurance company still expected me to pay the excess until he owned up, that took a court case and 6 mths

Get hold of a copy of your "Policy Wording", from your insurer if you haven't already got one. The section you want to find is "Protection against an uninsured third party". Almost all policies have this. Depending on how it is worded, sometimes giving the other persons contact and vehicle details is enough to get your excess waived.

The moral of the story? From now on I will not stop for cars on the side of the road!!!Maybe after a month or so you will. Once a nice guy, always a nice guy, no matter how trampled. Ay bro. ;)

Ah, hrm, probably harsh lesson learned about carefulness around bikes though, and who to trust and who not to. I trust NO PERSON moving a car around my bike, UNLESS they have a more pricey bike than me (not hard) and I hold their bike keys - then they can flatten it all they like.
