drill the sump bung, catch bottle and the best tyres you can afford. BT39's etc. Could end up being an issue if you are relying on it on moday for transport when it was crashed at the track on Sunday?

Nah, I do it all the time. That's what duct tape, knead-it and araldite are for!

Having a spare commuter has it's advantages too though I guess.... ;)

I have another couple of bikes which I can use so not that much of an issue. Just good having a bike that i can loan to people to learn on (my mrs included) and not give a shit if they drop it

Lockwire, catch bottle and rip the plate and sidestand off. I've got those dodgy old slicks on my standard wheels if you still want to borow them. May pay to hit the headlight and taillight with duct tape. Definitely the tail light, brake lights are damned distracting.

It's easy as to remove the lights and shit. We even leave the numberplate on... If you're real stuck and want to take the fairings off then you can always make a number board out of cardboard.... :D

How about wheels? - am thinking about getting some BT39's or putting some other rims on and getting some bigger tyres. - what sort of rims should i be looking at and how easily do they go on? - http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=274761515 these fit for example?

Henk

They could be made to fit. Usual conversion is with GSXR250 wheels, the change over is well understood and you can use the standard rear disk and sprocket carrier. I don't think anything is a straight swap. Any wheels you get wil likely require modification for bearings and some new spacers made.
You can run slicks on the stock wheels (with tubes) or BT39s. I'll drag my stock rims with slicks along for you to try next meet if you like.

What width tyre does a gsx250 come with stock ?

The spada is fitted with 140 rear from factory, are slicks an option on this ?

Yeah i will definately try the slicks out next meet. see how they go. I dont mind sticking with the stock rims, was just thinking about teh bigger rims as the stock ones are pretty skinny

Henk

Plenty of guys going fast on slicks and stock rims. I've been beaten by them. Advantages of the wider rims are a nicer profile and no need to run tubes.

Just race the bastard!

IT will be a while untill you can out ride BT39ss or Dunlop TT900.

But probaby not before he can outride the golden boys or similar that are on it at the moment. Especialy if it gets mildly damp at Mt Welly.

I believe it has Pirelli City Demons on the front and Michelin M62's on the rear at the moment. The rear is almost shot, the front is okay but havent exactly heard great things bout the city demons. So since i will be needing to get some tyres soonish i may as well get bt39s.

So what size BT39's will i be looking at?

What size tyres does the fxr have ? You can always get a 110/120 front sports tyre and turn it around for your rear ?

Henk

You can get the BT39s in the stock sizes (I think). Have a look on the interweb, if that fails ask me next week and I'll have a look at the ones I have in the shed. If it's for buckets only get the ss version.

Any one have a spare LHS footpeg thingy (if someone can give me the correct term that would be great, cant remember it for some reason now - the bit that the gear changer and footpeg attach to?) Had a bit too much fun with it last night,my mate ran out of talent and ended up snapping it. Would prefer to buy it, but if anyone has one i can borrow for next meet that would be fine too.

Hmmm, yea some one forgot to metion that those are the weakest part of the whole bike and if you intend to race you should replace with somthing more solid ASAP.

Personally I would not recomend replacing it with the same thing however I think I have a left one in the shed (I think I broke the right one) I am no wear near the shed at the moment so will let you know sometime later (probally tomorrow arvo)

Both my spares are out on Loan. I think Damien has the right one (I think) and you're more than welcome to grab it off him next week. Unfortunately for you my left hand side one is currently in Napier and I won't be getting it bck until Kaitoke which doesn't help you much. Make some up out of 10mm ali plate if you can. You'll end up doingit anyway.

10mm? Really? I was having a look today and was thinking 6mm would be plenty. Or do you really need to have the notches to hold the footpegs straight etc?

10mm is the way to go. if you dont want to/cant make your own then in about 1month i'll sell you some race rearsets for the fxr. ;)

I can get stuff laser cut but I'd definitely be interested in something that's already made right the first time, what kinda price tag would be on those rearsets?

I would be interested in hearing about these as well.
Three questions:
Price?
Are they crash proof? i.e. They will not snap on impact like the standard FXR ones
Are they a little higher (5-10mm) and a little further back (5-10mm) than the standard FXR ones?

Cheers.

hey

they will have higher footpeg position and slightly further back on the bike, made from top alluminium and made so you can replace the parts you break without having to buy a complete set.

more info soon

I made the fatal error and made my first lot out of 8mm and they still flex and can make it quite hard to change gear (binds the gear lever).

The notches help, mainly just to keep the pegs in a good position; last thing you want is for them not to fold up when sliding down a kart track..

I'm led to believe they should fold up out of the way or have nylon on the end ?

Bert

do cart track pegs have to fold?

Well it seems that the two lower North Island tracks require it, + nylon protection. but I'm only going on my limited knowledge. Maybe some of the Wellington & HB boys could some light.

Yes It would be nice to have them fold out the way with nylon on the under side of the peg

Bert

Yes It would be nice to have them fold out the way with nylon on the under side of the peg

So it is a requirement or something that is recommended?

Though I've made this mod and made nylon gear & brake levers,
I would have though that a solid peg with a solid nylon end would offer far better track protection in conjuction with other nylon crash protection;
the bike would slide on the three or four points of contact (low side).

for those that care, RS industries (electrical supplier) supply nylon nuts & bolts (up to 10mm); which could be useful for mounting options where your steal bolts might end up exposed in a crash.

Pumba

So it is a requirement or something that is recommended?

The only MNZ rule that I know of that covers this is the following:

10-5 - All machines competing on tracks or courses other than approved Speedways or like
tracks must be fitted with securely mounted footrests which when in the riding position do
not touch the ground with the machine at a less angle than 45 degrees from the vertical.

Unless there are suplimentry rules at each of the meets, then technically there is nothing stoping you running solid pegs (provided they meet the above rule). Personaly for the kart tracks I feel you pegs should fold, the only acceptable exception being if they are made oud of a solid bit of nylon.

In which case you could argue that they aren't footpegs at all but crash bungs where you put your feet if anyone drags out the rule book.

This is by far the most logical answer to the footpeg debate!!

I think if you looked at my bike and the way it crashes(real good, too much practice) it is the perfect solution does not damage and does not mark the track at all.
