Hey guys
We are 2 bikers from Palmy and we plan a tour through Australia. Any
hints what's the best addresses for shipping our bikes there (either from
Auckland or Wellington to preferably Sydney and back)? Seems to be quite
complicated and expensive from what we found out so far.

Any suggestion/hint would be really appreciated

thanks

A mate and his wife did Noosa to Perth last year and he found that the easiest way was to rent bikes over there. Not cheap but a lot less hassle.

We (Clint640 and I) shipped our bikes from Auckland to Sydney last year using Go Logistics. I can't remember exactly how much it cost, but for a 4 week trip, it was comparable to hiring bikes. We didn't have too much hassle (except for Quantas losing some documents).
We really liked having our own bikes, knowing how to work on them, having a luggage setup that we liked etc.

If you are talking XT type machine the cheapest option would be to buy a used one over there.

Yep, It totally depends on how long you're going for. It's easy check out rental prices & do the math. For us it cost about $2000 per bike including everything to get them there & back, we went over for 4 weeks, if we had rented that would have cost us $3500+... so a total no brainer. If you're going for 2 weeks however it's equally clear that renting is the way to go.

If freighting you're best to go into Sydney, as NSW don't require any paperwork for foreign vehicles on their roads. You will need a Carnet document to get into Oz temporarily & very clean bikes though.

The full illustrated story of our trip is here: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=460829& There is a summary of the costs near the end.

Cheers

Great! Thanks guys for the vaious hints - we are talking 6 months (no envy please-we deserve it) so hiring is not an option. Buying bikes over there will take too long since my chick would need a lowered version and old saying of my dad "never buy/sell anything under pressure". Also you won't really know what you'll get.

So we are still looking for shipping options. Found that there is not a single ferry going between NZ and AU and the only car drivon ship doesn't take bikes. Aparently too difficult to secure them. RUBBISH!

Wiil go now and learn Clint and Rosie's story by heart - 2.000 bucks seems to be the default price (some $'s back and forth)...

Is this what you meant? Did you have any experience with them?

That is the right link. We got a quote off GetRouted last year, it worked out a fair bit more expensive than the freight forwarder we used, but with them we wouldn't have had to crate up the bikes. I think they only do transport to/from Christchurch also, so you would have the added expense of getting the bikes down there. Definitely worth getting a quote though, they have a good rep.
