View Full Version : VTNZ sexism?

This morning I took the car to VTNZ at Takanini for it's WoF. No worries, sitting in the queue waiting my turn, watching all the blokes being successively waved into the test area over the pit...
Then it was my turn. I was asked to get out of my car; I said nah, it's ok I'll do it. Oh dear. That was the wrong thing to say. I was told most definitely to get out of my car for him (tester) to drive in.
Hmmmm. Went inside and asked if it was their policy not to let women drive their vehicles in over the pit and was told - no, it's just that most women don't like to do it and let the male staff do it. Ok, off I go and ask the tester (after checking that my car had passed it's warrant of course) why I couldn't drive my car in despite at least 3 men having done it while I was there watching. He kept saying "no public allowed in there" over and over, even when I said "but male customers are doing it all the time".
Now, there IS a sign saying no access to members of the public in the area; I don't have an issue with that - all good for OSH and all that I assume. BUT (and it's a huge BUTT, i mean but) why are men allowed to break that rule. I mean to say the testers were actively waving the male drivers into the area whereas I was told in no uncertain terms to get out of my car!!!
I've emailed a letter to the station manager asking why there is this discrepancy (veiled "discrimination") against women drivers. If the rule is there, it's there for ALL motorists surely. I wait with bated breath as to what his response will be.
Grrrrrrrrrrrr.

"Dear VTNZ,
Stick it up your arse.

Hahahaha, funnily enough I thought this morning in the course of my enquiries that I was being polite and reasonable. My daughter was embarrassed though, so perhaps my demeanour wasn't quite what i thought.....
My gripe is that if there is a rule, it applies to all or at least make the sign to say "no women allowed in the area"...haha, wonder how that would go down. Just blatant sexism in my opinion.

I get incredibly ticked off with this sort of thing, it is sexist and discriminatory, complain, write a letter to your local paper etc. Probably best to use a few more words than Pussy suggested though PB

Unfortunately this is not unusual. A young lady from work always asks me to accompany her for her WOF as she knows she will otherwise get told things are wrong that clearly are not.
It really does annoy me that such sharp practices still exist.

i'll never use vtnz. failed a wof for my car on both front wheel bearings. put it on a jack at home, no wheel bearing play at all. stupid b'stard thought the play from the top of the suspension when it wasn't loaded was bearings!!
took it to local mech on monday morning, got a wof sweet as
when went back to vtnz they wouldnt believe me, told me i must have replaced the bearings!
the moral of the story, find a nice little owner/operator mechanic in your area and i g'tee you he(or she ) will look after you. they understand the value of repeat business
cmoore
6th March 2010, 16:53
in all seriousness princess...Im sure it is just the fact they are scared of woman drivers that come in in case they run them over...men may not always be better drivers but they are generally more confident...so driving over the two ramps is a doddle, whereas they probably see woman drivers hesitate....and yes you are no doubt more then capable of doing it...but from their point of view you are just another woman.....:)

Avoid VTNZ, they reject cars to keep themselves busy and so they can feel important (self fulfilling industry). I've had similar issues with bearings, seatbelts, various lights etc
When I was building a trailer I went down to speak to an inspector about where exactly to place the side marker lights as what the regs say and what they display (in diagrams) is different. He had absolutely no idea. So I put them where they looked best and guess what, it passed.
One of the inspectors actually took me aside after the initial inspection and asked me questions about the trailer as he liked some of the features and wanted to do the same to his!
But as a rule I avoid VTNZ, overpriced, underworked, pedantic, etc etc etc
I go to the local AA. I know there's a lot of flack about them and ACC, but for a warrant, one of the best in town, reasonably priced, half price warrant with a service, never picked up something that wasn't there (not like local VTNZ wankers).

I have had issues with VTNZ too, my 18yo son took his car in and got failed on about 20 things.....came home i fixed most of them but did nothing about a few like exhaust noise...lowered shocks etc......I then took it back for the recheck and it passed everything...with the guy doing the re check wondering why some of the things were even failed in the first place....good for me but not the sort of consistant service you should get.

Hey thanks for all the replies, I've enjoyed reading them all. (Even the suggestion to grow me pits - hahahaha had to do that for a while when my collarbone was first broken as I couldn't get the razor under there; was almost able to plait 'em! but that's probably too much information...)
I can see the point (seriously) where they might be afraid we'll drive the car into the pit. Apparently it has happened there before, with a woman driver, but before anyone jumps on the bandwagon a bloke has done it too. All I feel is that if the rule (their rule, up there in blue and white, big letters'n'all) everyone should follow it not just one portion of the community.
Btw, we generally only go to VTNZ 'cos it's close but only for the cars. We never get our bikes done there!!! Trust bike mechanics only with the 2wheeled preciouses.

Crikey, you folks are real twats.
If I was a poor bloke working for two tenths of sweet-fuck-all at a VTNZ, I'd probably be doing pretty much exactly the same thing (also any elderly folks or anyone who looked uncertain) after having watched several disasters happen and then having to be the poor schmuck that has to drag the damn car back out.

I keep a close enough eye on my bikes that I don't have to wait six months to be told there is a potentially dangerous problem with one of them. But some of the most thorough warrent checks I have seen done on my bikes have been done at VTNZ's (Botany), as opposed to a couple done by some to remain unnamed "bike" mechanics where they've hardly glanced at 'em.
Judge a mechanic/WOFman by how well they do their job - not by the name on the top of the building.
Well in that case I'm sure you would be a wonderful employee and enforce the rules consistently, including the customers who have a penis.
Nah, I'd probably let everyone drive their own car on. I understand that Youtube has a unsatisfiable need for "epic fail" videos.

Didn't read the whole thread, but has anyone suggested that the reason they let blokes drive in is a sympathetic mind to bruising their ego?
Occurs to me that some guys would take not being let to drive in as an implication they aren't up to it.
Pretty weak argument I know, but your gripe should have nothing to do with what gender you are, and to flat out say it was because you're a woman is leaping to a conclusion that has too many variables to decide.
He saw you drive up and didn't fancy your skills?
You're car has scuff marks on the tyres indicative of curb hopping while parking?
He might have, (right or wrongly) had those in mind for example.

There is a point that has not been mentioned maybe?
VTNZs have lanes that you must leave the car/bike in and then you hand over the keys when you pay at the counter.
No member of the public is allowed in the testing area. If they let anyone drive onto the pit they are breaking their own rules. The only exceptions I have seen are for fleet or commercial users. Or professional drivers.
That doesn't excuse any rudeness, poor service etc. The customer is always right etc..

I would like to be able to drive my car into the pit area just like the menfolk, and not be refused because I don't have a willy. Would you like to be stopped from doing something you're perfectly capable of doing just 'cos you do have one (I assume you do).
I actually think it's quite an important issue that if something is such as safety issue, then why are some people allowed to ignore the rule while others have to obey it? It's a genuine question, and not aimed at shitstirring about gender. If commercial drivers are allowed to take their vehicles in through some allowance in the rules then all well and good, but I'd have a hard time believing that ALL the blokes I saw being able to happily ignore the sign were all in the "commercial' category...

BTW, I should have known when I pulled up. Not many of the cars in the pool carpark actualy were parked straight. Glad there wasn't any pits in sight, we'd have had a few tow trucks and cranes making some good money.

I get sick of girls bitching about being descriminated against when
a. They have ladies only triathlons, womens nights at the pool, gymnasiums etc.
b. Most of them can't drive properly anyway.
Ladies nights only to stop the dirty old pervs getting their jollies.....:msn-wink:

Now wer'e cooking with gas! so I say we "should" and suddenly, I'm retarded. You do know that history repeats if you don't learn/drive home the lesson?
The dicks in these private establishments should do one or the other, not pick and choose.
History has repeated itself many times. Are you saying that we're back sliding and gonna take a womans right to vote away, or stop them entering bars, because a fuckin warrant tester didn't let this woman drive over the pit?
One set of rules, that's the only issue here I think. They are breaking the rules by letting the guy's drive in. NOT by stopping PB. Perhaps the boss showed up just as it was her turn and they started obeying the rule because of that.
Something else has just occurred to me though. PB, are you saying you WANT to break the rules too? Dangerous thing to say on here, what with all the fuckin hypocrits that make up the majority of KB.

Is this just a case of a "MAN in charge" made a decision ... and a "WOMAN" did not like that decision ... ??? :dodge: :chase:
The guy making the decision would be the one cleaning up the mess (held responsible) if things turned pear shaped in the pit ... HIS choice ...

Hahaha, no. I'm not a little rebel really. Just thought it seemed odd that given the signage those packing a package behind their fly were able to blatantly disregard it.

Plus: Whaddaya reckon would happen, if on average, men lived longer than wimmin?
Commission of Enquiry and $$$'s spent to find the cause, with resulting media ads in English, Te Reo and Klingon...
However, as the average Doris lives about 4 years more, it's OK.
So in conclusion, I may get to drive over the VTNZ pit, but you get 4 years longer to whinge about it.

Not deserved - earned, aspired to as a higher calling.

LOL perhaps the boss did show up at that time???
Be a damn shame if the boss was a girl! aye.
As for the hypo's on KB well thats another stereotype, that is hard to argue.
Not saying take anyones rights away, saying exactly what PB did in her first post here, One rule for all, or NOTHING,. Fair enough isn't it? As they are the ones with the signs saying, only staff to drive in the inspection area.

I did get a response from the station manager today. He acknowledged that his staff are not meant to allow anyone to drive into the area and he would speak to them about it.
If they get into trouble over it (I'm sure it'll only be a talk, I wouldn't expect anything drastic from it) then so be it for being lax on their work place regulations.
Overall I am happy that something which is in place to effectively keep a work area safe might be acted upon. ( Regardless of whether or not the resident bush lawyers here think it's relevant or important [see seated refuelling debate]).

Dont see how the gender of the boss enters into it.
One rule for all is what is meant to happen, I just think to that getting upset about something and posting it on KB is completely un productive. I've done it too, so I fit the KB stereo type.
Here's the thing about stereo types though, they are what they are for a reason. Like it or not. Men are more capable drivers, generally. We have more accidents though cos men are also more egotistical. There are more Maori on the unemployment benefit than Pakeha. The list goes on, with statistics that are not politically correct, but are still true.

the moral of the story, find a nice little owner/operator mechanic in your area and i g'tee you he(or she ) will look after you. they understand the value of repeat business
Yep, next time give me a call, I'm working back in Manukau again and we do wofs, for bikes too.

Didn't read the whole thread, but has anyone suggested that the reason they let blokes drive in is a sympathetic mind to bruising their ego?
Occurs to me that some guys would take not being let to drive in as an implication they aren't up to it..
VTNZ staff should hug them and lead them by the hand to the VTNZ counselling dept.

On a related note, I heard Teresa Gattung on the radio plugging her new book.
What I can't get over is the hypocrisy of some wimmin - one minute she's crapping on about how there is still sexism in the workplace and it's a hard row to hoe if yer a Doris, the next she's plugging her new book on the basis of her gender.

this morning i took the car to vtnz at takanini for it's wof.
