If cops can step out in front of cars, then they can step out in front of bullets. :niceone:

Actually its the NZ Customs Service guy that is standing in front of the rifle - not the cop.

Regardless - A stupid thing to stand in front of having your picture taken.

You can't see the action. There may be an open bolt or the bolt may be removed.
Since it is not an issue firearm then it is possibly part of the illegal drugs haul.
I doubt they are that stupid to pose in front of press photographers with a loaded firearm.

I doubt they are that stupid to pose in front of press photographers with a loaded firearm.Bah, I pose in front of the media with a loaded firearm all the time. They just smile and nod, and say things like, "much respect, mate", and "oh, you can go before me."

We can't see whether it has a mag in it. That dude might have safed it (you know, pulled the mag, checked the chamber, put it down, sniffed some Contac, had his pic taken, sniffed some Contac, gone on a killing rampage (with a machete, like Antonie Dixon)

It's an air-rifle, according to the Herald.
link to article (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10631030)
An air pistol and an air rifle were seized from one of the men's houses. Mr Cahill said although a firearms licence was not required to hold the weapons, the men did not have a reason for having them. The rifle could deliver a fatal shot, Mr Cahill said.

It's possible that the gun was checked and shown to be unloaded.Plus even if it wasn't,they very rarely discharge spontaneously when lying untouched.:slap:
