It may be a cutesy pun to some but I think Wellington has its own identity, we don't need to borrow and bastardise some tacky sign from the US.

I was stunned enough when the Wellington council decided to spend $20,000 on that Stock Exchange ticker down on the waterfront (which subsequently needed another few thou to fix). Hardly the epitomisation of Wellington's fantastic culture - and one of the most unlikely places any budding broker is likely to go for updates on their share prices.

Oh thank the LORD someone has a clue. Weta digital is THE leading special effects company IN THE WORLD!!! Most of you are no doubt aware of this but still don't get it???
Its in recognition for not only their achievements but their absolute dominance in the industry, ie: BETTER than Hollywood. Poo poo it all you like, who the hell says it has to be original, you are totally missing the point. Personally think it is a great idea. You na sayers should be proud a piss ant lilttle country like New Zullend is a world leader in yet another thing & not shy to maximise/capitise on it. Should bring in more tourist dollars also.

Pff, no one here is debating the undeniable achievements of Weta and sure we should recognise it - just not with a moronic, unoriginal, and fugly sign! If anything, such a sign promotes mediocrity and a lack of creativity which is exactly the opposite of what it is supposed to be in recognition of.
Can they not think of anything better?

Nah, I'm sure he means that we should get rid of all those horrible colonial names (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dundein, etc.) and leave the name the way they were (Tamaki Makaurau, Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Otautahi, Otepoti). I'm right yes? :P
Oh thank the LORD someone has a clue. Weta digital is THE leading special effects company IN THE WORLD!!! Most of you are no doubt aware of this but still don't get it???
I totally get that. By why not put a sculpture of a giant weta on the hillside then? Something with a LITTLE bit of taste at least. I also want to celebrate the creative ingenuity of New Zealanders, but I fail to see how poorly replicating that lame sign achieves that.

To vote on a social networking site like FB proves futile (as it does on similar sites) if you dont get out there and actually stand up for what you beleive to be right.
The sign is going up, guess Wellingtonians shall just have to get used to it (for five years at least)

NOTE: Over 9,000 votes were 'yes' on that same poll.
NOTE: The voting supporters of the sign are still out-numbered 2 to 1.
NOTE TO SIR MICHAEL FOWLER: Most people gave up on Irish jokes about 30 years ago. Trying to save yourself by saying, "It wasn't meant to be derogatory" because he was referring to the Irish "trait" of opposing authority ignores the provenance of how that "trait" developed, ignores NZ's extensive Irish population who came here mostly via the transport system of justice imposed on a starving people and still makes you look like an idiotic and irrelevant old duffer.
NOTE TO STEVE FITZGERALD: We realise you're Australian and therefore devoid of taste and restraint, however just because you're losing the popular vote doesn't mean you can insult your opposition without firing them up even more. Trying to discredit a "mob" is like urinating on a forest fire. Don't put the sign up, mmmkay?

For a conservative city like Wellington, on a winter Monday night, without a co-ordinated action, 100 people isn't a bad start. About 10 times what I would have expected. Considering most NZers, as often demonstrated here, take the attitude of 'Oh its doomed, they are going to do it anyhow so why should I bother'. Sometimes fell NZ is the country fill of Neals from the Young Ones.

As one politician mentioned....why would Wellington wish to 'steal' something so tacky from the most plastic place in the world.
It's an embarrassment before it's erected!

Rather the sign than another Marae for the coons.

If you check out the likes a lot of people have clicked "Like" so they can register their disapproval via comments which renders the poll less valid than the average Arsebook Troll.

Some comparisons from the radio.....
What would Auckland's equivalent be?
Auckwood ----the city of fails?
What about the far north?
Honewood--- the land were fantasy becomes reality.
The Wellywood City Council is powerless to stop the undesirable/desperate sign going up, honestly, what chance does a handfull of protesting Vic Uni student have?
If everyone single trigger happy FB user turned out, it would still not make the slightest bit of difference...the erection commences next week.

and there goes the good old NZ Nealism. The WCC own 35% of the airport company, of course they can stop it, the idiots want it but can point the finger at the airport company. If they see that it will be a marketing fail they will stop it. At the moment they are too blinded by their own spin.

Sorry - I just dont see the point of the damn thing....
The people who will see it are people who have already decided to go to Wellington, are leaving Wellington or already IN Wellington, how will this promote the place?
Sure - you have you giant carrots and you may (if you are a particularly sad bastard) say to the kids, ohh, we are only 30km away from the giant rams testicle, we gotta see THAT etc but honestly would you fly to another city to see a Wellywood sign? Erm - no...... If it was a 1000ft tall statue of Robert Muldoon and had giant lasers for eyes and one arm going up and down like king kong trying to grab the approaching aircraft out of the air it would be a freakin winner...
But its a sign.....
Its boring and the sad cocky bastards that dont realise that most people genuinely DONT like it are misguided and vain.....
Still - like someone said, it will give drunk students a place to climb up to and have sex...
Keep the noise coming. Can't guarantee stopping it but better than rolling over and taking it as a anal probe.
Exactly, and for the record, I have never suggested the roll over option.
Its a bit like that other issue (the biker related one) ...
TPTB wait for the noise to go away, and then they can quietly go about thier business uninterupted.
Protest action, on a whole, in NZ, is pathetic to say the least.
The internet is a great tool to gather support but it ends right there most of the time.

Well actually it is possible that a lot of people dont genuinely like the bloody silly thing isnt it? Its not about being precious... In fact the airport bosses 'fuck you I know best attitude' is the really precious bit.
Denigrating one side of an argument is a valid tactic but in this case - I'm sorry, its just a really naff idea...
