Host it overseas. Way cheaper and you won't notice the small difference in speed.
In fact you can probably get free hosting depending on what you want to use the site for!

If you have a little more money and might want to expand, go with bluehost.
Once you have a bluehost plan you get unlimited data and bandwidth, and can host unlimited domains, so for ~$10 a month you have unlimited everything, plus they have a really nice CP system.
They also throw you a free domain on sign up.

You get what you pay for, there's always a catch with "cheap"... PM me for a quote or email ed@yhp.co.nz

Have run a dozen or so sites through these guys, Including at one time a fully loaded shopping site.

Very well priced and they respond immediately and sort crap when it needs to be done. Up time is so good I've never noticed any of my sites being down.

You do webhosting?, You do have your fingers in a few pies then.
Whens the yhp.co.nz site going to be finished?, I'll nominate it to be looked at when a couple of interests come up for renewal.

LOL!!! You know the story of the mechanic's car, and the builder's kitchen...? We've been so busy we haven't had the chance to get it finished!
Yup! I also run the YHP business. We build and host websites and while I'm not the technical expert, we have graphic designers, programmers and an expert SEO team.
Sites we have done include:
www.hotwatercylinder.co.nz www.solarheating.co.nz www.plumbers.co.nz www.fermit.co.nz all of which I run for the plumbing business with many more to come over this year bringing the plumbing, gasfitting and solar industry together.
Also for other customers:
www.jamesblond.co.nz www.paperhanger.co.nz www.valencia.net.nz among others and we've just got a contract to do a building project management site. We can use existing templates like Joomla or scratch build to custom design.
Our first shipment of Fermit has just cleared customs and I picked it up today. I guess I am a bit busy...

I've used cheapwebhosting.co.nz (who resell oxxus services out of the US) - not bad overall, local and speedy response, decent performance, heaps of space, ssh access and nice price. Only drawback is they use the Ensim control panel and I think it's a bit unwieldy. Nice thing is they can be paid locally by internet transfer rather than by credit card - some of the bargain hosting co's have an interesting approach to renewal billing...
Oh, and i host Joomla! sites with them too.

I have a real problem with web hosting - every year I have to spray the exterior of the house with insecticide to discourage the little buggers

My personal preference is for HostGator. Hosted in the States with some very reasonable packages.
