What to do.......?
I want to get a new enduro style bike. Prefer 2 smokers.
Wife says no road bikes so time to get something Badass and new!
I do trailrides like Desert storm, Trail blazer and berm buster. Also a bit of Woodhill, Dome valley, Not really many big jumps. (meow)
Then the odd ride at Coromandel with Daf, Xen, Jt and crew. The harder stuff.
Been riding since Nov 2008 but like it as this will be my 3rd bike.
Had 2007 Rmz450, them Ktm 300 09.
My Options are;
2010 Ktm exc 300, E start, Proven as I have the 09 model already. $13.5k ish
2010 Gas gas Ec300 Six Day. No E start, Good pedigree? No bad comments as yet. Parts may be expensive? Looks different. 13k +
Husky wr300. Not much info on that but it was suggested.
TM250... ???? Can you get one?
Don't really want a 4 stroke as I have the fear that they may explode. I had one and felt like I was riding a hand grenade. (no real proof to back that up, But heavy and high C.o.g.)
What else is there?
I think it is Ktm vs Gas Gas.

Either a 2010 KTM 300EXC. Better be quick, theres only afew left in the North Island.
Or the new Sixdays EC300 which looks rather sexy, but still.. cant beat a KTM.
If you're up for something different and want to be seen with a different looking bike definatly go with the sixday gg EC300 ;D

Steve, shuddup...
Gasgas parts expense is a myth, genuine parts are no more expensive than any other brand, its just the lack of aftermarket parts that people get confused with.
you could get a fully factory gasgas 300 http://www.gasgas.es/es/enduro/25-ec-nambotin-300cc.html

How about a TM EN300? Yes you can get them.
Got to be the best looking bikes, and TMs are supposed to be bloody fast stock.
Or even Husky WR300.
If i moved to an enduro bike it would be between those.

I had a ride on a Husaberg 390, I know 4 stroke etc, etc..., but I was impressed, as light as my 200exc, far smoother power and suspension that softened everything, it was a bike you could go fast on really easily. I realise you are only talking about 2 strokes but I would suggest a bit of research into the whole spectrum of bikes might give you a lot more options especially if you are not looking to race, for single track enduro work you need agility, light weight and controllable traction.
Just so I don't sound like a 4 stroke advocate from the days of BSAs, up until riding the Husaberg my next bike was definately the 300EXC but now I would have to spend some time riding all the options before buying.
Enjoy buying!

I really like the look of the ktm's - and their 2 stroke motocrossers are bloody fun to ride, but i somewhat object to the high and mighty routine (imho) that the brand seems to take - whats with the whole "ready to race" motto, when they quite clearly still havent bought parts of their bikes into the 21st century - i mean what the hell is up with steel frames? they can rabbit on about how they like the feel of them, the flex or whatever but simply put, they arent investing the money in r&d to get a suitable alloy frame for the bike. Honda did it ages ago, and admittedly it took them a few years to get it right, but they have arguably one of the best handling ranges out there. KTM said the same thing with their shocks, and what do you know - eventually theres a linkage!
buy a CRF250X - awesome bikes, electric start rocks - I saw a guy who had ridden down a gully, walked down to help him fearing he was hurt (he was ok lucky for him). Then realised we had to get his bike back up a 10m near vertical face, with a straight drop below - he just hit the electric start and slowly walked it up - i was more puffed from walking down there than he was!

KTM have proven their bikes to be fantastic without a alloy frame system. No need for them to go there. And they have also proven that the linkage isnt necessary. Only reason they're going linkage(with the SX bikes) is for the US market. I heard they were getting constant degrading on their new bikes due to not having a linkage system.

I thought they were within 10kgs, could be wrong tho! I laid it down and picked it up to test the point you raise, I didn't do the full buried under the bike and try and get it off me bit but I thought it was no harder to pick up than the 200, bear in mind I'm the proverbily skinny white man at 68kgs & 54 years so these young guys shouldn't have any problems. As a side note, the other two guys with me who test rode this bike (one of them bought it) both ride 300EXCs and were saying the same things as me, and we are all fairly well commited KTM riders.
I think it worth the OPs time to investigate all the options if he's going to spend a serious amount of cash.
Hope your legs feeling a bit better!

I agree, the PDS is just fine by me, and the frame and suspension is every bit as solid as my crf 450 was, plus the system does give great traction on nasty climbs etc.. am truly impressed.

From memory the '10 KTM's where announced somewhere around mid year 2009 (or even earlier?) and released in September. I would wait to see what is happening with the 2011 models. Especially as they tend to drop the price and run-out the older stock (if there are any 300s left)

There will be little to no changes with the 2011 EXC's. 2012 is when the revamp is supposed to be happening. And there wont be any 300's left for a runout cost to occur. There isnt many left as it is.

You call up gasgasNZ and ask for one
There are only gonna be around 250 of them made, and 80 of them are going to France.
Also, there only making them in June/July, so none have been distributed yet.
But if you consider that the TTX cartridge for the Sachs forks and the TTX shock is close to 6k, then the head with interchangable chambers, powdercoated frame, Renthal twinwalls, the FMF Q Stealth, special white plastics.
Price is 8945 euros, which is ~17500 NZD
But if you look at the gasgas 300 sixdays, its ~$1700 less expensive than the sixdays ktm, and cheaper still than a normal ktm 300 http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Dirt-bikes/auction-273560456.htm
The EC300 Electric has been delayed due to a patent that was submitted by another manufacture that has caused Gas Gas to re develop its electric start EC300. Component re-manufacturing, re-tooling and testing will see the EC300 electric production date delayed and to be announced as soon as we can. We apologize for this delay knowing that customers have deposits on this model. We will keep customers and dealers up dated as we find out more information from Gas Gas.

Im not really sure if this is true or not, but iv read, more than a few times that the TMs are alot higher strung than other bikes, in that they shit the rings after about 50 hours and become a bit lame power wise because of it. This is just something I have read, if you spend a while searching forums im sure you'll find similar statements.
But in saying that, iv also read that the TM300s, the older ones, were more agro than ported 500s. Seemed to have been tamed down a bit now, but still faster and more agressive than any other brand of bike per comparable capacity, 125, 250, 300 etc.
Also, why is an alloy frame preferable to a cro-moly steel frame? the alloy may be lighter for the same volume of material, but you have to use heaps more of it to get the frame as strong as a steel equivalent, so an alloy framed bike is probably not significantly lighter just from having an alloy frame. Gasgas use a steel perimeter frame and their bikes seem to handle pretty amazingly, also something you would find from searching forums...

Everything i have read about the TM's is great. Some people dont like the forks, but I think thats a case of people wanting something to whinge about [no linkage ktm - same deal]
I have never heard anything about TM engines wearing out quicker. They do have more power though. Which in my opinion is a good thing. Mate of mine had a steel framed [05-06-07?] 250 for as long as I have known him. Just sold it not long ago actually. One top end [not because he had to either]. Over 300hrs.
Whats wrong with 5-speed? I have never wanted another gear on my YZ. E-Start? Come on. Its a 2 stroke. Not hard to kick.

That'll be because nearly everyone except them have turned their backs on 2smokers.
I'd almost bet the 200 and especially the 300 exc are damn near the biggest selling hobby/trail and endurance bike out there?
You wait till they perfect direct injection and we have the power delivery of a 4 stroke and no valves etc to worry about, and we (hopefully) can still do a piston ourselves in the shed.
I knew following Honda's pr bullshiit about polution (which was a cover for selling more parts and Mechanic time for their dealers) would come and bite the big four on the arse.

2009 TM reviews.
From the article on the TM300
"Who should buy this bike? Firstly, the person who wants to ride this bike will need to be fit. Secondly, do not touch this bike if you are not an advanced rider,as throttle control is a must. Thirdly, this bike is awesome when you can let the engine rev to its potential, though make sure you have your weight forward. Tight single wheel tracks do not work well with this engine, but flowing single wheel starts to use its potential.Wide open grasstracks will put a smile on your face a mile wide."

yeah i dunno, the 250 i rode had a resonable hit for a enduro bike, but it had a shitload of bottom end power as well... It was right at home on singletrack through the bush (had crf250 then, was so much nicer than that.

Deciding what kind of bike to buy is like deciding what kind of beer to drink. We all have our preferences. If you want to buy a 2 smoke enduro bike you have to buy Euro and there is plenty of choice. They are all pretty well engineered and have their own strengths and weaknesses. I am considering a new bike later in the year and my choice will probably be between another Husky Wr250 or maybe a 300. The husky handles most things really well from the open stuff to real bush bashing and I really like it after a gas gas 300 which was quite plush and lot more tourquey
The only thing that might lean me towards an orange bike is the electric start. Sure 2 strokes start easily generally but while you're still getting the bike in neutral and kicking it over someone with a button is already 500m away....but then I am a bit slow
4stroke

id consider a wr300 husky, i know i know its a smoker but ive never had one so might buy 1 and keep the 450. hmm id still look at a husky as well as the gaser, if you can shoot into spectrum mcs and see if you can get a test ride.

When I upgraded I didn't go out looking for a Gasgas 200, it just happened to fit the criteria.
I'm pretty small of a person, so wasn't keen on an enduro 4 stroke as there rather heavy, wasn't keen on a mx 4 stroke, because the suspension would need reworking for enduro riding, also I wanted to stay in the same class that I race in now, being 0-200 2 stroke.
So that either means a kdx 200, exc 200, or ec 200. Or another 125, but that was a last resort having already ridden my 125 for 2 years now.
KDX is too big, heavyish, average suspension in stock form.
EXC200, I wanted the new framed version, as I didn't like the feel of the older frame, felt fat. and the new 200s were too expensive or had too many hours,
EC200, I already knew what the gasgas' handle like, how the suspension reacts, how the bike feels to ride, so a 200 was a logical upgrade, but it wasn't what I set out to get.
So basically what I'm saying is I wouldn't buy a bike because of wanting something new for the sake of it being new, but rather that the criteria for a bike isn't fulfilled by what I have now.
Sorry for the thread hi-jack

Not to long Dan. Surgury is on the 30th. I'm told it can be about 8 weeks before I start racing again. Not to long :)

Hmmmm that new Ktm looks nice.
I'm feeling that the TM EN300 is the bike for me. Just like the look of it and its sounds like a bit of an animal.
Not that I'll be in control much of the time!?!?!?!
Quote from EMD:
"The difference between the 530 and the 300 two stroke is that the 530 suits someone who enjoys the feeling of getting your arms ripped out of their sockets slowly, where as the 300 will just snap them right out!"
That sounds dangerous..... Cool!

It's not too bad actually! It's Kenny Leforges old one. He sold it to upgrade to the latest greatest.

I think its awesome to support the smaller euro brands. I'm sure that GG will serve you well.

First ride impression...... Wow!
Vary agile and responsive. was only riding around the grass and trees behind my work.
Motor feels strong but I only had it on the softer Map setting.
Brakes touchy. Suspension?? No real test for it.
No pics yet as I didn't have the camera with me.
Sunday it will be getting the first real ride at riverhead. Should nearly be broken in.
What oil and mixture are you other Gasser guys running? That GRO stuff at 50:1 was recomended.
noobi
8th April 2010, 18:40
The GRO stuff is hard to find, most guys run either 40:1 or 50:1. Not really a big issue.
Just use a good synthetic really.
I use Motul 800 at 40:1, I like using more oil, better protection in theory
Congats on the new bike, the same bike that won the sixdays, outright

Good to hear you are rapt with it. The guy who owned my bike before me ran it on 45:1 full synthetic (can't remember his brand preference), since he owned the bike for a few years I've followed his recommendation, except I use Motul 800. He had recently changed the piston and said the old one looked sweet as. The jetting seems spot on for my riding ability too, there doesn't seem to be a flat spot anywhere that I have detected. A bit of splooge does come out of the exhaust but he said it never fouled a plug, and better to know there is oil in there.

I was running my Cr250 and the Exc like that! Good Fat power and never fouled a plug.
Black electrode rather than copper colour and wetish around the outer ring (under the thread).
Not a bad enduro tuning, nice fat power band and you don't notice it come on pipe so much.
Seems to be able to chug from any situation with this setting, doesn't wheel spin so readily in the slippery stuff and starts well.
I've re-tuned now ( cause oldschool was to fast for me) but the above served me well for a long time!!
