I would not be spending it on anything until I had a job.
Unless it was perhaps buying a small business.
Not an ideal situation to be blowing it.

Finding employment is definitely the most important item on the agenda, Wife is currently running a small business which isn't yet returning anything to the budget so don't want another one at the moment.

If I had 50k to wax on anything I wanted it would be ...
Go to Russia and go for a joy ride in a Mig 29 which is about 20k USD. With spare cash tour Europe through the Swiss/Italian mountain roads in my Aprilia.

As much as I like the submarine option, consider this option....
Put it on the mortgage on a revolving line of credit
A) This saves you a shit load of interest & reduces the time in the "death hold"
B) Interest saved is the same as interest earned & no doubt your loan is at a higher rate than bank deposits are currently paying & obviously you pay tax on interest earned.
C) With an LOC anytime you need $$$, you can draw it out that day, any amount upto your "line of credit" for whatever reason, you don't need to go cap n hand to ask the BM
If work isn't looking likely in the medium to long term or you are just wanting a change then study? Could get a student loan. As you have money behind you, you don't need to borrow a huge amount for study, remember its interest free, free money is good money if put to good use.
I am actually in a very similar position myself

If you can spare 5 - 10k, might be worth trying to market your wife's business...

What do you mean market it?
Currently nearly all turnover is going back into advertising, we have placed three big arsed features in local papers, are running constant smaller print ads, radio advertising and have hand delivered about 600 flyers in the local area, with more deliveries ongoing.

Cheers I will look into it.
As for study, I have spent the last two years amassing as many qualifications as I can that compliment my work history, to the point my CV is looking over loaded but from feedback I'm getting the amount of people applying for the positions I am after is huge and of the highest caliber. I did look into a tertiary qualification but it was so close to the cut off point I had to defer it until next year. Wasn't prepared to sign up for two years without some real info on what I was getting into.

You're welcome. Just a wee heads up, the catch is the interest rate charged is slightly higher, but the savings are worth it in the end. And obviously you need to be disciplined. Some people (fools) get carried away with an LOC & spend up large. One way around it is having a monthly/weekly limit of spend on your credit cards.

I meant branding the business and advertising the brand, not necessarily the services... but looks like yoov already done that...

Checked the website, nice design. When marketing to the public you need to be found easily and these days when anyone is looking for a product or service they "Google it", and a website needs to be visible to generic seaches. If someone knows you or the business, a website is easily found, but if someone searches, 'nails' or 'makeup' or 'weddings/makeup/etc.' your site will be nowhere. A small amount of $$$ spent on website optimisation and SEO can do wonders for the amount of work you attract. Most websites, no matter how costly or cheap are no more than a business card that will only be found by people specifically looking for the name of your business and will never be found by the general public in a generic search.
Content writing is a profession and the words and phrases and the way content is written is critical as is an effective SEO program if you want a website to actually make money for you rather than being an attractive business expense that you can show people.
Check my post in the Webhosting thread for examples of successful sites we have done and PM or email me if you want to discuss anything.
All the best, your wife's business deserves to bring rewards for the hard work you have both put into it.

thirded... just had a quick look and your keywords and descriptions don't change from page to page... whilst they're not the be all and end all these days, they will help with your ranking. Might be worth canvassing the ladies on KB and ask them what they would search for when googling for getting their nails done... then adjust the wording on the pages and reflect that in each of the pages keywords and descriptions... but that is just 1 part...

Yup! Even the choice of your domain name makes a difference. We often refer to a website that tells you what terms are most searched for in your industry which helps in choosing the domain name and content for the homepage.
Despite that, we have been able to take a website that has no bearing on the search terms for its domain name and bring it up to page 1 and rising against specific websites. Google Auckland Plumber for instance and see where Euro Plumbing is ranking at the moment. Aukland Plumbing has the No1 sopt simply because that is their domain name, but soon, Euro Plumbing will outrank them.
Google Rheem, or Coopers, and see where Hotwatercylinder.co.nz is.
www.jamesblond.co.nz is only 8mths old and in a very competitive industry up against much bigger companies with years of SEO behind them and long established websites. He's gone up 20m places and has had to add 120 vehicles to his fleet, take on more staff and his bookings are through the roof. All done without spamming the search engines, (beware of this with some SEO companies or you run the risk of being blacklisted by Google), and his site is now starting to have its own inherent relevancy. We will shortly be able to back off the SEO and revert to a maintenance role. He's one very happy customer.

Robert Kiobasi will tell you the most important and first priority in this situation is to have a stable income. Use some of the money if neccessary to develope an income.
The even smarter one in me says ditch the family, mortgage and bugger off to bangkok.
The song says "one night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble", I think you need to "myth proved" the song.
Just try before you buy, or you might be banging kok......hell, maybe its what you want, I'm not King Brian, who tells you what he thinks is right or wrong, and that you must live by HIS rules.

A google for "makeup wanganui" or "nails wanganui" brings up the site as first listing, and its those people we specifically want. Personally I believe fighting for a higher ranking in generic sercahes for just the term word "nails" or "makeup" would be madness.
That aside, all the marketing makes mention of the website, and about half of it specifically points people to it, In that regards its doing very well and the website has already paid for itself tenfold. Though that's because the hosting is $50 a year and I built it with Frontpage. Lmfao.
