I strongly recommend you do one of two things: Either use the site's excellent search function (surprisingly this topic has been covered many times before); or you could ring Dave Hewer at Kiwi Bike Insurance, 0800 629 253, or check out his website at www.kiwibike.co.nz. I can't recommend Dave highly enough.

Also definitely check out Vero, they have very good prices for full cover for motorcycles.

Try NAC. They are often the cheapest. For me anyway.

Might also pay to do some research on how well these companies do when it's time to pay out. That should definitey play a huge role in which one you pick.

Two things I always ask when getting insurance; credit rating and claim pay out ratio.
Who wants a cheap insurance company that doesn't pay out on many claims?

Hmm interesting, is it easy to find out the claim pay out ratio? I'm with Kiwibike (Protecta) and they've got an excellent credit rating but who knows, they could be a pain in the arse when it comes to paying out. From some posts here it seems they're pretty good with paying out though. I was previously with Golightly (Vero) and they were good, but a bit more expensive than my current insurer.

Kiwibike have a good reputation, and I think if there was going to be issues you would have heard about it on here.
I've not seen an insurance company "advertise" their claim pay out ratio, so you have to ask. My thoughts; if the ratio is good they will happily disclose it, otherwise ...
I think I've only had one insurance company not disclose the ratio to me. It made me suspicious, and I took my business else where. Sometimes a deal is good for a reason.

I can't see the point of asking for a payout ratio. What is more important is what the insurance policy covers as that is what they must pay out on.

FWIW Vero had ~97% claims satisfaction last year. Their premiums can be a bit higher than others but it can be a small price to pay.
Kiwibike would have something similar across all their companies they sell insurance for I'd expect.
I wouldn't go to anyone else except Golightly or Kiwibike.

I have used a few different companies, Classic cover insurance was the best priced, and they did pay out straight away when my mate crashed his bike. The only negative I found was that they don't do a monthly payment option, well didn't back then. I am presently insured with my buisness stuff with vero, which worked out cheaper again so didn't renew with classic this time.

+1 and -1 for Vero.
+1 They are very good with the claims process.............
- 1 When they are open.
Their claims department are'nt open on the weekend, so you may be stuck until Monday if you do'nt have a balance on the credit card and you are out of town.
House insurance is still with them, but I changed the bike insurance so I know I can get assistance if I break down on a weekend ride. I'm not keen to sleep on the side of the road for two days, or three if it's a long weekend..... (Should I not have enough spare on the credit card if I break down/crash far from home) and that's not exactly an unlikely scenario.
Made two claims with vero.
A claim for the house, and it was handled superbly, I cannot commend them enough.
The claim on a car, well, broken into and the ignitioin barrel fucked, car could'nt be locked or started.
Rang up and asked what the hell we were supposed to do had we been away/out of town, when we have to wait until Monday to claim. The lady I spoke with did'nt have a clue. (She was very nice and professional but could'nt help at all)
I later found out we could have had it repaired and claimed for the repair on the Monday. I only found this out after a bit of email back and forth when I told then why I was cancelling vehicle insurance with them.....

We've got a 24/7 hour roadside assist line but yea the claims handlers only work mon-fri in my department.

I called AMI who don't understand bike insurance, so I hung up.
I would have called Vero next, but life's too short. They don't make it easy.
I was going to call Mr Baker's lot but after Kiwibike found a policy, nuff sedd.

Might depend on your age. But my insurance on my Gixxer thou only costs me $450 p/a. Try Classic Cover Insurance - they are great. But I think you need to be over 25

I know Kiwibike have an extra 15% discount for a <5000km annual restriction. I've forgotten the name of the firm they placed the business with, but there are no restrictions and no pre-requisites. They didn't even want to know about my 130km ping last year OR my security.
It could be something to do with being over 45 :o

Seems very expensive but we need a lot more info such as your age, claim history, speeding tickets etc.
