View Full Version : Desperation takes a new turn

I ride my RG150 to town and back every day (10km each way) and desperately need to get it fixed.
I was riding along and then it basically died. It sounded as though it didn't get enough fuel and was suffocating.
So I pulled over to the side of the road and proceeded to try and kick start my bike for the next 30 or so minutes then decided it was most likely a fowled spark plug for some reason.
Girlfriend arrives with the right tools to check a spark plug, once I got it out there was a lot of oil around the bottom of the plug and it looked as though it had a very small carbon build up around the edges.
So I gently rubbed off the carbon with my pocket knife and cleaned off the oil with some tissue and put the plug back in after making sure that the plug actually has a spark.
Praying to god that it turns over I kick it. Nothing. It was just the same as before, almost as if it's permanently flooded.
The bike is now stuck in town out in the open car park. Can someone please shed some light as to why this may be happening and if anyone would be so kind to let me borrow a panel van or a car and trailer that would be really awesome. I can't rent a vehicle because I'm only a 19y/o student with low funds. I live in the Mt Roskill area.

Pushing builds character.
And depending on what you're pushing, it also builds police notoriety and a hefty bank balance.

Made 100% sure it was in a safe place. Right next to the downtown cop station parked between a scooter and a 250cc jap motobike.
Lol, the kill switch was definately not on.
I'll be picking it up later today when a mate arrives with a car with a tow hook.

Has it been ridden in or left in the rain, or in any way exposed to large amounts of water on top of the tank? Many of the RGs have dodgy tank cap seals that allow water to simply flow into the tank.
If it pools up around the bottom it can get into the carb and block fuel flow.
This exact thing happened to me. Upon taking out and opening the carb we retrieved about half a glass of water, and a lot more in the tank.
That would be the first thing I would check.
If not there are plenty of other more serious issues that could be the case. Good fun.

Since HONDA'S are so RELIABLE,its good too see them pushing the car home with the bike rather than towing the car home with bike:innocent:

Managed to get hold of a car with a tow hook and then hire a trailer and get it home. I would never tow a bike, that's just silly. Lol.
Spoke to one of the sales men in that scooter parts shop in New Lynn on Great South road yesterday and he said it is probably my carb. So when I got it home today I got the carb off and tipped all the petrol out. I don't think any water came out of it. I haven't ever parked it in the rain until it got stuck in town and I had no choice. Ridden in the rain a few times but it's been mostly light drizzle.
I'm going to take the carb to that scooter place in New Lynn tomorrow to get them to give my carb a service, $40. Would this be wise / too expensive / is there a better solution / place to get this done?

Like the man said, try a new plug..even cheaper if it fixes it. Like the picture of the bike that done a wheelie into the cars boot, shame the rider fell off.

Love this thread.
Spark plug or,.... take off the carb, take it to a scooter shop, refit the carb, ........it all sounds good. How are things now?

Got the carb serviced, apparently there was gunk in the jets and stuff. Put it back on and after a kick or two it ran! BUT then about 30 seconds later it just died. Any idea why this happened?

check petcock in prime position. check fuel in tank
Slyer
15th March 2010, 15:33
Now that you've sorted the gunk you need to sort the source of the gunk.
You should install an inline fuel filter, they are cheap and easy to do.

Those damned hens, roosting in your engine.
Hahaha that's awesome. That's going to be my new sig when I get round to it.
It's most likely my spark plug, I took it out cleaned it all up, put it back in, kicked it and the engine turned over and idled for a sweet few seconds then just died. Going to get a new spark plug tomorrow and see if that's truly the problem.
