View Full Version : Hunters: the roar is almost here

Well as a couple of local Hunting stores are reminding hunters that the roar is almost here and suggesting guns should be checked etc and offering for rifles to be sighted in and tested & so forth.
I wondered how often on average do we sight in our guns to ensure clean effective kills of our prey and if not often regularly do we get clean kills or have to track a wounded animal ?
I've always shot for meat so an effective shot with minimal flesh damage has been the priority and have on occasion had to track an animal to deliver the coupe de gra'ce
So how long tracking a wounded animal
1) Always a clean kill
2) less than an hour
3) less than 6hrs
4) A day
5) fark it go get another one
Sometimes it's impossible to retrieve a carcass if it's gone over a bluff or fallen down a washout etc. But all effort should be made to retrieve what you shoot or at least ensure it's dead.

I hunt via crossbow...I hunt via semi-auto spray-and-pray. Every two hundred meters I empty a magazine into the bush just for shits and giggles. Always a fun time hunting over the ridge from Tank.. Oh, did I take a wrong turn back there? Am I in the same valley? Who cares..

up to the range to put about 20 rounds through both guns but as i look after them a know where they shoot.
Always aim for head shot so they go down or it's a miss but with the dog tracking them now its not so hard if it needs tracking.

 So there's far more chance of wounding the animal huh?
slightly different but in "A quiver full of hope" (bow hunting) one of the opening scenes is a shoot & wound and fail to retireve a deer.
I like the almost 100% clean kill stats  even when it's a regular event to loose animals not knowing whether or not the shot was lethal or not; it's even been written about hunters coming across easy shots only to find why.... the animals suffering from maggot infested gunshot wounds

Too true, never buy the stuff. I have a tame hunter just out of town, venison and pork in the freezer. He likes to hunt, I like to ride, it's an even keel.

Seems though that hunters are like fishermen: great at telling their exploits of conquests but rather tight lipped about the realities of their not so brilliant exploits.
A perfect hunting record is 100% impossible to achieve, there are loses & non 1 shot kills amongst the glory of special hunts as well

really? I have the 308 marlin lever. Im less than impressed with it - its really accurate (to about 500m) and easy to shoot tho just misfires about 4 rounds out of every hundred. What round dose the sako use?

It has a fairly short lever- throw and front locking bolt, removable 4 shot mag.(I always carry a spare loaded mag.)
3 to 9 power scope and the rifle has never let me down, getting a tad 'used' looking now.
I use to use 180 grain CAC hollow-points, now use 165 grain Lapua soft point projectiles in my reloads.

Well, one good reason not to waste 'em firing indiscriminately on that particular night would have been the suburban setting they were in.
No, hang on, it was Porirua. My bad.
Woulda been a hoot if they'd shot each other up tho'.

Fuck going into the bush during the roar. Too many fucktards who shoot at anything (movement, etc) are wandering around in the North Island.
Especially scary are those with the ink still drying on their licences.

Heading off to the Urewera's on Saturday with my old man (you may know him, Phil from Mainly Hunting) and his good friend. Getting choppered in and staying in the Manaohou Right Branch Hut. I haven't been out bush on a real hunt in over five years or so. I'm really looking forward to getting away from everything.
Anyone stayed in the Manaohou Hut?

I've had to pump a magpie with 3 rounds of .22LR to kill it. I then feathered the bird and did an autopsy, only to find that all 3 rounds had gone through the chest area. Bloody tough birds they are!

 better start feeding up on your weetbix, 175lb draw n all ya know :bleh:
Piece of piss... all sounds heavy and most people can easily draw the weight, the hard part for example on the standard bow is holding while aiming, and you are doing with one arm, with the crossbow it locks into place and holds the bow in firing position, and pulling up the bow string with your whole body weight... The average hunting crossbow has the stopping range of about 50 yards (but wouldn't want to be any where in the 90-100yard range of it), there is also there is the art of the actual hunt invovled and that is what its all about, the actual hunt not the actual kill.
There are a few myths out there about crossbows... that they are more powerful than the long bow due to the draw weight etc... and more dangerous than guns and normal bows etc... well they are just that, myths... a compound bow with a draw weight of say 60lbs is probably equal to a crossbow of 150, 175lb crossbow is roughly equal to compound bow of 75lb this is due the the power stroke of the bows is longer, a crossbow has a shorter power stroke. Also the average crossbow has a arrow length of 16" to 20" and a bow has around 30" adding weight and momentum... advantage to the long bow. A good archer can release 3 or 4 arrows to maybe 1 arrow or bolt from the crossbow. Longbow has greater range.
However what a lot of people don’t realise with crossbows or a standard bow is, the arrow is heavier than many small calibar bullets like a .22 it gives them more momentum in flight and in their the danger zone are deadly. For example, if you have a high powered crossbow firing a 20" to 30" 425 grains arrow at 360 feet per second, with a hunting broadhead it could cut right through (not saying it can) the front of a bulletproof vest at 30 yards and keep going. There are crossbows out there that fire upto a 25' bolt and upto 425 fps like TAC-15 that also have a much longer power stroke than your standard crossbow as well.
However...
Myth: Crossbows have the knockdown power of a firearm...
Fact: Comparison tests have proven that there is a negligible ballistic difference between compound bows and crossbows. These tests disprove the claims that crossbows perform like firearms. In other words, a crossbow has no ballistic similarities to a firearm.
Myth: Crossbows make deer hunting too easy compared to standard bow...
Fact: The advantage a crossbow has over a conventional bow is that it holds the bow in the drawn, or ready to fire, position for the shooter. While shooting a crossbow is generally easier to master than shooting a vertical bow, it cannot be argued that it is just plain easy. The crossbow hunter must have the same woodsmanship ability and nearly all of the same shooting skills as the vertical bowhunter. Overall the longbow hunter has more advantages...
Myth: Crossbows are unsafe.
Fact: Used wrong any weapon designed to shoot a projectile is unsafe, however in the United States there is no increase in accidents or accidental shootings at all, their are less accidents in per head of hunters compared to other forms of hunting, including standard firearms and black powder hunting. Since 1976 we have had only 21 archery-related hunting incidents; 10 caused by longbow and 11 by crossbow.

I have never had a deer take more than 3 steps, the last one I shot with a 54cal rifled muzzle loader. The Deer was facing me, at 80m the round hit it in the chest and ended up just under the skin above its arse and it broke the Deers spine on the way through.
