Hey all, I just bought a bike to get into some trail riding. What sort of gear should I buy as a must have? Aside from boots and a lid that is.

I would say get some armour, I had a womens Fox roost and it saved my ribs/chest on a few occasions. I paid about $145 which is nothing if it saves a cracked rib.

and shin/knee guards. Oh,.... and bark busters for your bike (and knuckles)

yep agree, armour. i also just got some thor knee guards, maybe not a must but ive got dodgy knees and they help.
i fell off in a river last week and rooted my elbow too so maybe elbow guards wouldnt hurt.

100% beleive in a neck roll or neck brace system, as important as a helmet. Goggles, and keep them on when following other riders to stop you from going blind.

Body armour, gloves, knee/elbow protection. MX clothing not essential as long as what you are wearing is sturdy.

my thoughts,

# 1 Helmet, and make sure it fits properly,
# 2 Boots,
# 3 Gloves,
# 4 Goggles
# 5 Knee Pads

those are my must haves, everything else continues from there,

Neck braces imho are not anywhere near as important as boots and helmets, there are alot of riders that choose not to wear neck braces in MX, but that is a whole discussion in itself,

Awesome feedback. Thanks all. I was tossing up on the armour but will definitely go for it now. Did a great trademe deal on a bike trailer today and pick up the bike and other gear tomorrow so no excuses now.

A note on armour: You want the pressure suit type, not the more rigid roost guard type.

Cheers

Thanks Clint. That's the type I bought in the end. Should be all sorted now.

Camelback.

(You'll thank me the first time you go riding with a hangover).

Id say a full body condom!
Otherwise you might end up having to shower at the other end.
Gloves? exhausts are hot when ya land on them...
knuckle protection? ever punched mother earth?
Knee armour? Fuck knees hurt when you wack a tree...
Roost gaurd? does anyone wear these? i mean, how often does stuff hit you in the chest? pressure suit?

good supportive boots. many times you are going to be putting a foot down (whether it saves you from a fall or not) and thats going to put a lot of stress on ankles
