Not sure how true it is but it looks very real.

I can just see it now... everyone at the track running two generators - one for their tyre warmers, and one to charge their bike.

Why would you want to warm knobblies?

In the pictures there is also an e-motard bike.

well they had one on display in 09, unsure if it was a working prototype or just a visual mockup deal. But a year is plenty of time to get some working ones developed so i reckon its for real

The Zero Emission Motorbike from KTM.

The KTM FREERIDE at the Tokia Motorcycle Show 2010. Starting on March 26th, exclusively on www.ktm.com!
Under the title “Freeride” KTM will present two near-series prototypes at the 2010 Tokyo Motorcycle Show, which in one year’s time will transfer the “Ready to Race” sporting spirit of the brand into a series model fit for the 21st century.

With its first zero emission motorcycle, the world’s leading producer of offroad motorcycles has developed an electrically driven sports motorcycle that proves that riding fun and environmental sustainability need not be in conflict with one another.

statement from KTM.

Will be well good once an established brand starts producing electric race bikes, will mean I can completely skip the whole racing four stroke thing (bloody uncivilised things) :D

I should think the biggest challenges for engineering these would be minimizing weight and ensuring a decent distance / number of hours on a charge. It would be a strange site watching MX and sounding like something out of the Jetsons.

I've raced the e-karts near Auckland airport, huge amount of torque and very smooth power delivery but they're very heavy compared to the traditional lawnmower powered karts.

When they get them pretty much right I will be keen on one. Jetsons, funny

Here is a clear picture, the motard wasnt really what i was expecting!

Haha the motard looks like its covered the shrouds in newspaper. "in the news today..."

Gotta say a big part of my love for bikes is the sound and smell (2t's). It will be a sad day for me when we are forced to ride electric bikes. Gotta say them being quiet will certainly take away a fair amount of noise restrictions but i just love the sound of a mighty 2t

The KTMs produce 30bhp and 33lb/ft of torque and use a 2.5kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Weight is 90kg (198.4lbs) and the range is approximately 1.5-hours. While the battery pack carries .5kWh more capacity than the Zero, the rest of the specs don't match up flatteringly. The Zero produces 50lb/ft of torque and 23bhp, while weighing in at just 73kg (161lbs). http://hellforleathermagazine.com/2010/03/ktm-freeride-leaks-in-german-m.html

heaps more pics (http://www.1000ps.at/modellnews-2347899-KTM_ZEM_Freeride)

Yeh the motard looks pretty horrible, wonder why they tried that, barspins for stunting perhaps? But the dirtbike looks good, wonder how it'll stack up against the Zero's and Quanty....'s produces more bhp and longer battery life than other electrics. And quite similar specs to a 125 2T by the sounds of it.

Who say we have to convert, they already have pretty good terrain for burms and jumps etc, and a few hours would put some nice ruts in there for cornering assistance :D

yeh, have come across his stuff before, big budget for a homer type project, but chump change in big company terms, shows what they could do (and then some) if the market swings that way.

At 10,000 EURO'S thats a pretty hefty price tag for a bike that puts out the same power as a 125cc for 45 min.

I could see myself buying one in like 4 years maybe.....

Its the same power in terms of KW or HP as a 125, but twice the torque (almost as much as a 450). So it would be alot of fun to ride I'd say.

There is alot of development going into batteries right now and you should see charge time decrease by huge amounts over the next few years. I'd say it wouldn't be stupid to say that the batteries will be quicker to charge up than you can use them.

For sure the torque is unreal! but so is the price of the batteries, the charge time isnt much of a concern. i would love to have one if i had a lazy 20 grand laying around.

Until they price drops its not really worth having, not having noise is also a bonus, but your always going to have dust. So having a track with neighbours near by will only last so long.

Great fo winter i guess....

Batteries will come down in price as demand rises. Plus you think about what you spend in fuel.....

and maintanance, maybe motor brushes instead of top end rebuild, but I bet they'll be cheaper a far fewer between.
