Don't know if this actually ended up being posted or not, as our internet is sooo sloooow it might have timed out (but that is a rant for another day)
I have a conference I am going to (free! damned if I would pay $700 to go) at the end of May - 24-27th. All about the "safe use of timber in fire". I have blagged some accomodation for the duration, but I was thinking of going a day or 2 sooner. Any suggestions of where to stay (cheap - poor student) and what to do in Wellington?

Cheapest place to stay? Free at another KB'ers! I'm sure someone will help you out, I'm sorry that I can't :(
To do? Depends what you like. If you're into clubs, pubs and the associated night life, Courtenay Place is pretty lively at night. Cuba street is just off Courtenay Place, more pubs there.
If you have any other interests, let us know so we can offer advice :drinknsin

Not much of a pubby person, although it depends on where, with who and who well off I am feeling. I am buying another $350 book tonight (thank you Amazon) so that limits the expenditure. Any KBers want to get together somewhere.
As the conference is held at the Te Papa convention centre, a visit to the museum should be easy to fit in during the boring bits. What else is around town. I like museums and stuff. Anything with a motor or steam is good. There is the car museum at paraparama, and isn't there a steam train up that way?
Other than that - the usual tourist things - Welly MC and look at the shiny toys :)

Southwards Car Museum is just off SH1 , a few K's north of Paraparaumu. Probably the best collection in the country and well worth a visit.
The steam train lives at Paekakariki, and can be hard to see as it is run by a Inc. Soc. and they mostly only there on the weekends.
I'd say go to Wellington Motorcycles and Motomart for a start. Always good to check out bike shops. Maybe see how many bikes you can test ride like that new K5 thingy :ride: .

Hey Geoff - it would be great if a few of us could get together when you're here. Keep us posted on your where abouts :) There's a few backpackers around Wellington you could stay. So are you riding down?

Slipstream's Inn is always an option. Close to the city, free accomodation and place to house the bike :niceone:

Sounds good. I am in Christchurch at present, lurking in the lab. I will be heading back to Auckland for a week or so after the conference to see the family before heading back down again after Queens B'day weekend.

I also have spare room and space for a bike but am 20 minutes out of wellington. Sort of in between Wellington and Parparaumu. Just to through in another option for you.
All the best

Maaate!
Only thing is I woudln't want to impose. There is a meeting on Sunday over the new Arms Act (Brentwood Hotel in Kilbirnie, 1400-1700 for any shooters) so might come up on Saturday (and be a pretty late arrival). That would make it a 3 day bludge, which is a bit of an ask.

I don't want to hear you've been frequenting Vivian St after your sojourn in Wellington. :nono:

I am in wellystone 24-26th also. The meetings I am attending are in the back of the Duxton Hotel which is real near Te Papa. Unfortunately my evenings are booked up but might try to find you in the Te Papa region one afternoon after the meeting gets boring. I was going to slip over to Wellington MCs and give WT a rark up. See wot happens.

There's nothing there anymore mate. Sorry. A couple of empty lots and empty buildings, and one sex shop.

I'm riding one way Auckland to Christchurch next week and am going to be staying at Downtown Backpackers in Wellington on Monday night. They have a place to park my bike and it is $50 for a single room.

I will be staying in the Duxton (glad I am not paying for it) during that time - give me a buzz (021-1667265) if you are around.

It is the old waterloo hotel. On Waterloo Quay and Bunny Street. I was told they have a place to park my bike, will find out when I get there.
