View Full Version : 2010 Capital Coast Adventure - Ride story and photos

Well we had a great day. The weather ended up being a bit patchy going from sunny on the South Coast to misty in the hills between the Hutt and Porirua. 4skins never did tell me the total number that joined the ride but there seemed to be a reasonable if not huge turnout.

I teamed up with Re-cycled and Aslan to accompany a couple of adventure ride noobs, who both acquitted themselves well on the day with us finishing on time doing the main loop and avoiding most of the challenge sections. Aslan went off to do some of those on his own and he can tell that story.

We started off at Plimmerton school and then headed into the city via the nice track from Newlands down to the end of the number 2 rail tunnel on the main trunk line at Ngauranga.

Did you read my other story about my WR popping the head plug? http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/120591-Did-any-of-you-know-that-Yamaha-4T-dirt-bikes-blow-a-plastic-plug-out-of-the-head - well my fix worked and the bike went as well as it normally does for the day and not a drop of oil leaked out.

I'll continue with the photos for a while then. You might spot yourself in the crowd. So many people I'm not going to attempt to get all the names on here.

merv
20th March 2010, 21:40
We headed up the track behind Crofton Downs off the end of Chartwell Drive that took us through to Karori and then we headed out to Makara and onto Terawhiti Station where the wind farm is. Some great views were had above Cook Strait.

merv
20th March 2010, 21:45
Then it was down to Oteranga Bay (or Cable Bay as some may know it because it is where the Cook Strait Cable comes ashore) and up the other side to Long Gully.

merv
20th March 2010, 21:51
We went from nice weather through Long Gully to misty weather up on the hills of Horokiwi and then down to lunch in reasonable weather at TSS in Alicetown. The guys we were with didn't need to visit Parliament so we just went past and didn't go into the grounds so no photos of that.

merv
20th March 2010, 21:56
From TSS we headed North up to Akatarawa and into Karapoti, then to Rallywoods, Puketiro and Battle Hill.

merv
20th March 2010, 22:02
After Battle Hill (No Motorbikes lol) we stopped for a nice afternoon tea at the cafe at Pauatahanui - haha I never got any photos of that, but us sitting there made a few others think it was a good idea to stop too - then it was off to Belmont Park and more mist in the air. That part took us through to the Takapu Road valley and from there it was just a ride back on the motorway.

merv
20th March 2010, 22:06
The wrap up was the usual dinner at Plimmerton School followed by 4skins giving out a few prizes. I must be too average, I never score anything. Thanks to 4skins for a great day out and to my riding buddies for a great day's company.

That's all the photos I have folks. Feel free to add your won to this thread.

p.s. wayne708 was taking great interest in our progress out ther on his SV1000s - I reckon he'll have a dual purpose bike in time for the next CCA in 2012.

We also saw mangell6 (hadn't seen him for a while) and he said he was on a 10 day 10,000km ride and 4th day into it and that was at Caltex Rimutaka so he hadn't got very far from the Hood (Upper Hutt).

I had a great day and like you, found the company helped make it all the more enjoyable - thanks guys. I only took half a dozen pics all day. I will load them later, if there are any worth the trouble.

Awesome day.

Looks like these have uploaded out of order they were taken

1) Rest stop in the clouds
2) Pablo and the Meridian Windfarm.
3) The dot of red on the left is a rider. The diagonal cutting going up the headland in the distance is the track
4) Views Galore. The 'power line' is the Cook Strait cable where it goes into the water. You can see the poles getting smaller and smaller the closer it gets to the water.
5) The South Island across Cook Strait.

Brilliant day. Did most of the challenge loops except the very last - got held up at the Hydro zigzag, but otherwise ran to time. Couple of shots from the few photos I actually took. Aslan & Woodie2

Yeah what a pain the new KB is. The only way I kept mine in order after experiencing that problem before with the Odlins Rd ride was to load them one at a time.

Thanks for the GPS file Eddie it worked well as a back up to the route sheets.

Aslan that's you isn't it in the first pic of BMWRSNUT's?

Do them inline and then you can re-arrange them to your hearts content.

merv

Re-cycled sent me these pics he took and asked that I load them up. I'll try the inline thing.

First couple are at Plimmerton school before the start.

201288 201289

Then there's a couple of our group up by the wind farm. Funny how bikers stand with their legs so splayed apart eh! Aslan took the first photo and Re-cycled took the second photo going by who was absent from each pic. I'm the odd guy that doesn't bother taking his helmet off unless he absolutely has to, which saves the hassle of putting it on again.

had a great time - will definately come back up for the next one

went up the molesworth on the way and just about had the whole place to myself. only came off once on the cca ride - paying to much attention to my chart and went into the side of a bank. on the way home to chch stopped to help a guy with a broken throttle cable on a bsa. that took a while so ended up going the last 200k home to chch in the dark - not a good thing with the stock xr headlight....

That was a brilliant ride, even tho I didn't really know anyone there. Didn't really get alot of pictures as I didn't really have any reason to stop, apart from the views. First stop was up at the turbines, then had a few flying stops to snap some pics. I done all of the challenge sections for the morning, and made it to TSS by 1130, so it was an extreamly long wait to go do the afternoon sections.

I then scampered off at 1250 to go do the afternoon sections. Not too sure where the "ball breaker" was on the first belmont section, and so I carried on to Upper hutt for a gas up, then headed into karapoti. Was cool fun going through the north end of the akatarawa's.
coming down the challenge section i came across a transalp nose in a ditch on the side of the track. Stopped and gave the two guys a hand to pull it out, then went on my merry way again.
Had a ball of a time going through the river, which gave the bike a bit of a clean .

After coming out of battle hill, I headed off for the last belmont section, taking a few more pics as i went through, and then heading back to plimmerton with a detour through tawa, signing out at about 530, and loitered around until dinner.

1. At the end of riding through the river section, this then came through. Maybe they can go anywhere.
2. The Turbines, where everyone stopped for a break.
3. Me parked up at the end of the river section for a break.
4. Painfully waiting at TSS to get moving for the afternoon section.
5. Waiting to start at Plimmerton
6. Belmont hills challenge section.

2. Someone going through the creek
3. Another bunker in the clouds

5. Challenge section of Makara looking into some bay.
6. More Turbines

I didn't know there was such an animal!

It has been mentioned in several posts in the CCA 2010 thread and on the CCA website itself.
I had some at the ride for $10 each if I could hand them to you or $15 if I need to go sort post and pack. They are still available.
Check the youtube video on the bottom of this CCA web page (http://ccadv08.blogspot.com/2010/03/ktm-cca-2010-rider-information.html) for an idea of content. That 10 minute highlight clip is also included on the DVD.

I have also just started work on the 2010 DVD today.

Superb ride. Mega thanks to John and the team for the organisation. Only had a couple of lay downs, both at 0 speed - once exiting the stream in the challenge section and once on Hydro Saddle rd. (I'm sure that hydro rd is a lot worse condition than it was on the last CCA). As usual never took enough pics after lunch, but here are a few from the morning

Turbines - zoom in on the pic and you can see some riders - gives an idea of the scale of the turbines.

I know these Ural bikes are still made today and there is a guy that imports them in NZ. I met somebody in coro this summer with a brand new one, sidecar included - they haven't made almost any changes to the bike since the 50's so it looks exactly like a 50's - 60's Ural.

Try 40's BMW. Reverse engineered by the Ruski's from WWII Bmws. Over the past 2 to 3 years they have had things like bosch alternators, brembo brakes, better head studs etc but they are still very close to the 40's BMW's.

From http://www.imz-ural.com/factory/:

A more likely story is that the BMW factory supplied the construction drawings and casting moulds. As a result of the Molotov / Ribbentrop Pact, transfers of technology had taken place in support of their Soviet "friends" in different areas. Soviet engineers toured German aircraft factories and brought back complete cannons as samples. The OPEL Kadett was given to the Soviets just prior to the war; however, it commenced series production only toward the end of the war as the Moskvitch 400. In 1941, BMW began series production of R75, and did not resume production of R71. Supplying the Soviets with the superceded R71 model may have seemed a good idea at the time.

I understand he was helping 4skins with gates as such skipping bits to get quick to the other gates. I don't think he did off road parts ... although can be proven wrong

Great photo on the front page of the Dompost showing Terawhiti windmills - you (well me, anyway) don't realise how much land is out that way, and how rugged it is, until you can see it all in one hit.

Its interesting flying into Wellington at night these days from Auckland too when you go the long way around to land from the South and you see all those windmill towers with their marker lights on.

And you can see the windmills from Paraparaumu Beach on a clear day. Looks like you guys had a good day - shame I couldnt make it this year. Looks like you covered a lot of the same ground as the time before. Good pics - cheers Merv and co.

A couple of short vids of JunkManJoe at the Capital Coast Adventure ride.

This was taken using my digital camera and I've got 2 1/2 hours of helmet cam footage to work through yet.

Great photos Merv. Didn't make it this year - maybe next time. One of the blokes in one of your photos looks suspiciously like Rick Barker - Labour MP from over Hastings way and Deputy Speaker of the House. And Ray Lind (husband of Annette King)? Good blokes both of them.

Big thanks to John and co ... it was just right .. testing enough on a big bike to make your heart race on occasion ... scenic enough to cause a sharp intake of breath ... tough enough to ask my wife for essential oil warmth... tempting enough to haul me into every challenge section (even the ones that kicked my arse last time .... go figure ).... see you all in 2012

Yes they were the two people we were showing around. I hadn't met Rick personnally before but Ray I have known for over 20 years. They were both new to adventure riding and enjoyed the day. Wonder why the National Party people don't seem to be bikers?

I finally got around the putting some video together of the 2010 event. Not my best work but it shows the varied terrain and scenery covered on the event.

As at the time of posting this Youtube was still processing the video so the quality isn't great.
