I am keen. Is the best thing to start in group 1, and then work your way through to the next group each ART day? Or can you chnage groups midway?

PS wont be able to make NASS this week- I have not seen my family at all this week with work commitments (and again tonight) and my kids are starting to back away from me because they think I am a stranger...

I saw on the other AMC day posts that there are cc restrictions on groups? Is this right? Then what group would I be in with the VTR (besides the "cool" group)?

All the groups are cool ;)

It is possible to move between groups during the day (up or down).
Seeing as your bike is in the 1000cc + category group 2 would be your best choice and any need to move from their will be assessed with you on the day.

I thought about this a little- what is 'fast' ? I ask this because I think my bike is limited to 180km/hr (ex Jappa), and I know that 240 is reasonable down the back straight of Puke in a race. Not that I have tested it or anything...

Fast is more to do with your skill, not so much your bike. You have a 1000cc bike, so I would suggest starting in Novice Fast, and you can get the instructors to move you if you don't think it is suitable.

DON'T even think about that crap. its a head fuck you simply don't need.
Provided your suspension is set up propperly the ONLY place your bike is going to be a"hinderance" is the last third of the back straight BEFORE hitting the braking zone for the hairpin. But because you are going slower you can brake later and have more time to think about that all important drive out of the hairpin.
You will have drive for africa everywhere else.

Ok guys and gals,
As expected the groups are filling fast!!
Group 2 is full and we have a reserve list running Group 3 has a few spaces left.

Group 1 has room left, so for those of you thinking about getting out on the circuit and experiencing what ART has to offer this is your last chance this season.

Group 4 this is the weekend before the last round of the club champs so any last minute testing its now or never and space is still available. We have Sam Smith coming down again along with our usual group of instructors to make the last day of the season a one to be remembered.

I have been reading the Keith code books - very interesting- and they make you think about corners in a whole new way (with products nd reference points). Is this the kind of stuff that you teach? Or is that more advanced?

I have also not received any confirmation -how do I know that I am in?

OutForADuck

Usually the money is taken from your account/card quite close to the event and that is used as confirmation.

If you have missed out then you will find you're contacted straight away to let you know and ask if you want to go onto the waiting list (things do change for people).

Both of you were in soon enough I believe.

I haven't had mine yet. I don't think I usually get it till the week before.

I have been reading the Keith code books - very interesting- and they make you think about corners in a whole new way (with products nd reference points). Is this the kind of stuff that you teach? Or is that more advanced?

The Keith Code books are reasonably advanced, so the info you get will depend on the group you are in. Below is my own personal experience, and I consider myself a below average rider.

Novice Slow is more about getting the right cornering lines, throttle control, smooth machine control and "looking". Brake and turn in points do involve reference points on the track, but I know from when I first did Novice Slow that I was not so conscious of them (my attention was pre-occupied with the other areas).

I've just moved up to Novice Fast. The instructors are still talking about reference points - but my brain has enough attention left over to be able to start focusing on them now. Also I find I can spend more attention on throttle control, as this affects so many other areas (suspension, cornering, exit of the corner onto a straight). I think I have my corner lines and "looking" pretty much ok.

One area I personally want to work on this time is improving my brake+blip+change down, which I don't recall Keith Code talking about much. I also have a barrier about entering the first corner on the front straight (because I can't see through it) that I want to try and work through.

I personally feel I learn better when I concentrate on just one or two areas at a time. So that is why I have chosen two things I want to achieve (call it my goal for the day). Don't know if the same approach will work for others.

I imagine group 3 could focus on Keith's words a lot more, but for them I expect it will be more of a fine tuning exercise.

OutForADuck

The Keith Code books range from brilliant basic info to more race orientated stuff.

I personally use alot of this stuff in Group 1 and up. Getting throttle control, balance and transitions correct is the core essence of getting your lines right and so something I drum throughout Group 1 days.

Talks I give around the throttle as a stability control, bike "sets" such as corner set, brake set etc, smooth shifting and transitions are all based around same tenants that are in the Keith Code books.

Really good pre reading.

Question, would group 1 be suitable for a 250cc rider on his restricted license? I'd really like to get along for this.

The track is a great place to learn and practice skills but you have to remember that you are learning and practicing Advanced Skills.

If you are a competent road rider that is able to maintain open road speeds and have the confidence and skills for your basic handling, then Group 1 is a good place to start to advance those skills safely and with instruction.

The size of the bike in group 1 is not as important as your being ready for the higher speeds and demands of the track. We have had larger scooters come out and do very very well and learn a lot along the way.

Conversely we have had much larger bikes be a liability to themselves and others. The same can be said for new riders and riders with more years experience.

Not knowing your riding level or ability, and as these things should always be, you need to make a personal and honest assessment for yourself.

If you have a mentor or more experienced rider you ride with, ask them to give you an honest assessment.

If you find that you are ready we will certainly be ready to help you out and move you along the skill curve

If you decide you need a little longer and don't have a mentor, get one.. there are plenty on here that are willing to help you be safe and have fun and we will be back next summer!!!

One more thing. Make sure you have all the right gear for the track. See the entry form for details

Confirmations go out one week prior to the event or when your group is full, group 2 your confirmations will be going out this week.

Full licenses are prefered at this stage although we will b re-evaluting this for next season. Again contact Colleen fo clarification.

The requirement for 2-piece gear to zip together, does that mean a full waist zip or can it just be the little 8" ones at the back?

It says 8" is fine. The important bit is if you slide on your back down the track it wont seperate, resulting in your loosing skin of your back - and then your backbone.

However it's pretty cheap to get a full size zip fitted. Check out:

Thanks for the info but I don't see anywhere that it says the 8" ones are ok.

From the Entry Form:
"22. Riding Gear: Two piece suits must zip together. Back protectors are highly recommended for all participants."

From the Briefing Document:
"Leathers or Cordura style riding gear with body armour (jeans or exposed skin are not allowed). Two
piece suits MUST zip together"

Edit: Not disagreeing, just saying that I can't find the "It says" bit, I was careful to check before I asked...

The preferance is for fully zipped together but the small zip usually at the back as you describe is the minimum requirement.
If any body does not have zip together gear see Kerrie Petersen of Motorcycle Safety Wear will fit zips to your gear for a very reasonable price, contact 309 9522

You are partly correct Frosty.

Yes you have to hold a licence for the bike you will be riding.

Simply paying for an MNZ license and getting out on the circuit on any bike is a no no. Proven competition is required, ie; stamps in the log book and the appropriate bike must be used.

My understanding is HD are going to move the S/F line back about 70 odd metres then it should avoid the last gasp race for the line pile up in the litter aka Craig & James at the TT.

As a matter of interest, the HMCC just contacted me to say my application has been declined because I ride a Honda CBR - and sports bikes aren't allowed to come to the training. He said (Steve Parker) I was about the 7th person that had been declined on these grounds.

LOL they accepted me

what time does this day wind down? I am coming to help but have plans afterwards

Looking forward to a great weekend.

All groups are now full and reserve lists are running. If you still are hoping to get in contact Colleen in the first instance and you will get an 'up to the minute' state of play re any cancelations.
If you still want to come we can find you something to do, Angela is always looking fo new blood to learn the art of marshalling.

See you all on Sunday.

Highlight of the day--unquestionably the last frentic session. Yes- thanks a hell of a lot to teh marshalls - it must be a thankless job sitting in teh sun all day watching other people ride. Awesome efffort.

What can I say………an absolutely fantastic day!!!!

Apart from a small delay getting into the circuit a great day was had by all.
Full groups and fine weather were the order of the day we even managed to accommodate several people on the reserve lists.
Mike Mallard from Star Insurance confirmed our level 1 status from an insurance point of view and presented us with a cheque. Cycletreads provided an excellent service is tyre changing, discounted retail sales and Nick was on hand for suspension and set-up advice.

Thanks must also go to our list of star instructors this year, Sam Smith, Steve Briggs, Avalon Biddle, and Jaden Hassan along with Paul Dobbs, Paul Pavletich and Vince Sharp. We also must thank the huge part the Marshalls play, Angela and her team work tirelessly to make you day possible.
St Johns thankfully had a very quiet season; I think they only got to drive their ambulance out on the circuit once this season.
The day simply wouldn’t happen if it wasn’t for Colleen and her organisational skills, she’s the one who takes your money and keeps you in the loop.
To all the instructors who (as the rest) give up their time plus provide their machines for little more than petrol vouchers…Thank you.
It takes a massive effort to put on an ART day and many people are involved believe me we all enjoy doing it and look forward to doing it all again next season. Thank you to all for a great seasons work.

It’s inspiring to see so many familiar faces, some of whom have attended every day we have run this season and it’s even better to see you progressing through the groups. We have had almost 600+ participants at our events this season and the ART experience keeps getting better and better, we strive to make the day the best we can and ensure you get the most out of it. Please remember to give us your feed back (both good and bad) believe it or not we do as much learning as you do and its your feed back that points us in the right direction.

More and more women are attending and mixing it up with the guys (just quietly its you girls that seem to do the biggest improvements on the day). We have secured the services of a very experienced female instructor for next season to give some feminine flavour to the male dominant instructor mix……thanks Dawn, its taken us most of the season to convince her to give up her valuable time!

Group 4 guys and girls, (for those that aren’t already) why not think about going racing?? The next club championship round is on next Saturday at Pukekohe, come along and see what it’s about. I and others will be there to answer any questions you may have. It would be great to see bigger grids and I’ll guarantee you’ll love it.

Keep an eye on the AMCC web site over the winter for information and dates for next season.

On behalf of the AMCC ART crew thank you all for an excellent season and look forward to seeing many of you again next season.
