Due to unprecedented demand, I have scheduled another training day at Manfeild on Mon May10th, just after Mothers day. This will most likely be the last one before winter.
Limited to 30 riders at a cost of $125 for a whole day training including one on one time in the afternoon. This is a fully controlled training day, rather than a track day and is geared to riders of any experience, even L platers. For more information go to www.prorider.co.nz

Went yesterday, had a great time.
Highly recommend this whatever your level of experience. I learnt heaps and came away with plenty to work on so the learning continues.
Really appreciated all the hard work of the trainers and helpers on the day.

Is this a level 2 day. I have a decade of riding time under my belt and ride an R1. Will this be ok for me or should I just do a track day instead? Ta.

Criminal, are you looking for a cheap track day, or wanting to learn something?
I went to the women's course last week. I've been riding road for 5-6 years, done over 100,000k in that time, but ONLY ride a 250 ninja.
One woman posted she's been riding around 18 years, can't remember what bike she had, but she took things away from the day. She also had an open mind going into it, and that does make a difference.
If you're looking for a cheap track day, you will get time on the track, but you will have to sit/stand through "boring" theory as well, and do some practical skills. It'll all be a bit ho-hum for someone not wanting to gain anything from it.
You need to look to yourself and answer yourself as to what you're wanting. Oh, the number one rule for the day is not to separate from your bike. We had 42 of us last week that managed that ;) Oh, not all of us were on little bikes either (plenty were 600+)
Skills that we did was riding at walking pace (smoothly) up to a set of cones and then weaving through them at the same pace, braking (rear, front and then both), cornering, looking at where we need to be. Basically working on the slow stuff to be able to go faster and knowing the limits of the bike in a safe environment.
If you choose to go, have a great day. If you choose not to go, enjoy your next track day and try to keep to rule number one ;)

After 10 years on two wheels if you are still learning to ride at walking pace and weave through cones then well ... no comment. I don't need to learn those skills - I teach them to learners. Looking where I need to be came to me naturally about 5 years ago so I can tick that off too. I learn something every time I go on the track as I get faster each time. Yes I like to keep the bike upright but that is not my no 1 goal. My no 1 goal is to get faster. Guess I'll just wait out for a track day then. Not being smug. Just candid. Thanks.

I have seen a woman, who I know is faster than me (not sure how long she has been riding), but she has ridden 200m or so with her feet dangling as she can not do slow manoeuvring (bugger, not sure where the "u" belongs there). I was horrified to see that. I come from a dirt background where I'm to keep my feet on the pegs as much as possible, so do practice that - others don't.
Karel and team do a more advanced course as well, but not sure when she'll be organising one on this island.
I just thought I'd give you an honest rundown of what we covered. I got a lot out of the day, reinforcing what I've heard/seen before, but getting a lot of it to sink in, which is what I had been hoping for.
Good on you for being honest, I wasn't trying to sound like a smartarse either.
Smiffy, have a great time. I'm just trying to figure out how I can book another course in later on in the year - down on the South Island though lol :)

I know that feeling chick - nothing worse than tyres you just can't trust. But as Sentox said, it will be a great chance to learn some very valuable skills in weather some of us might choose not to ride in on a regular basis.
Going to be a win win on the day, we are all going to have a fantastic day rain or shine.

Hi All,
For those that are afraid of the rain.
Well, Manfeild is very grippy in the wet compared to the road. You will also be learning to ride your bike smoother, so there will be that "Fear of the Wet" being taken out of your psyche.....
That said, it looks like SUN for Monday..... I can't say there will be no wind though, after all this is the Manawatu we are talking about...
Oh, and you will get to meet me, as Karel has got me along to help out.
Cheers.

Yup deffo the best day ive had on my bike and didnt even matter that i had the smallest one. Everyone was so friendly, espechailly the trainers "i dont care how fast your bike can go get your ass on the track" when i was waiting so i could enter last. Learning the skills was the best and once i figured out how to set up for the corner and how to throw my weight into the lean it was so fun. The only bugger was that i never conqoured the hair pin, but it gives me a convienient excuse to go to the next one! Thanks to Karel and the team for the most fun I've had with clothes on in the light of day
Its always refreshing to realize that we're never as good as we think we are and that we're still able to learn new skills in a safe environment where we can safely test and hone these new riding techniques learned
Things I personally got from the course
Braking - Never had my ABS kick in until we did the front and back exercises. Didn't realize the capabilities of my bikes stopping ability (do you know yours)
A new position for my front braking hand
Cornering - I turn too quickly in the apex of a corner but now learning to turn later - boy Karel would had sore arms in that exercise
First Aid - Great to refresh and learn the latest techniques for first on the scene scenario's
Slow turning obstacles - I missed that last cone first time but now a teachers pet (dont try and order mcdonalds with the first instructor at that exercise as he always trys to upsize you)
Was great to have instructors ride behind you around the track and then signal you to follow them thought the proper lines and braking - I lost a couple of my instructors (into the distance in front of me) but dont worry they have vest with there business names on them so if you find one just return them to that address - Great going guys and thanks it was a blast
The one on one on the afternoon laps was great also
You could ride as slow or fast around the track but boy those corners seem to come up quick at the end of the straights
No matter what your riding level is I would highly recommend a www.prorider.co.nz course and look forward to their next one
Cheers for that

Not one "incident" on the track made it even more enjoyable for all of us.
I know so many of you have more skills for your "riding toolbox" which is very the reason we are doing this, so well done to you all.

Had ample opportunity to work on the stuff I learned on the day, and finally got my feet working the boards the way I needed them to on Monday night, after giving it a bit more thought.
Thanks to all of the instructors for the time and effort they put into the day. Special thanks also to St John. I know they thought the 1st aid session was a little rushed, but for me it was the perfect length. Karel does a fantastic job and we are very lucky to have her here in NZ. Thanks to all of you for contributing to a very enjoyable day.
Hope to see some of you again after the Winter.
Ride safe.
Vicki.

Photos are up people! That was fast.... www.sportsimages.co.nz
I'm about to check them out now, how exciting!
Wow, they got a photo of me in the pits standing duck-footed and staring at my feet while holding a banana skin. Figures.

The photos are quite revealing actually. My avatar would be ashamed of me. Shoulders and head need to get down and inside the bike's centreline a lot more. The gap between what you think you're doing on the bike and what you're actually doing can be quite considerable, it seems.

I completely agree, we all looked a lot more upright in the photos than we thought. But the key thing is we all learned a lot, noone came off (on the track....) and there is always next time to build on that lean angle and more corner speed.

Website deal is not too bad - $5 a pic. Just bought 4.
None of the pit pics though - belly too large - I'm off to eat some pies to cheer myself up.

Yes, the photo's do tell a lot...
Yes, for sure concentrate on getting your body off the right hand side.
Don't beat yourself up too much about it though, 90% of the riders on the road (in countries where we ride on the left) have the trouble you have....
Now you are conscious of it, I'm sure it will be the thing you improve on in the future.
Manfeild is great for it, as it is mostly right handers....

After finding this picture (http://motorsports.sportsimages.co.nz/main.php/v/motorcycles/SG100510/track/SG_100510_654.JPG.html), I wish I had bothered sticking my knee out. Scraped toes and pegs a couple of times, so I need to start measuring lean angle in a less risky fashion.
Don't let anyone tell you those stock Shinkos can't stick

I have no illusions about their abilities, don't worry. But I'm very glad I made the decision to see them through to the end of their life. They make for good training in the wet.
Michelin will get my vote when they wear out. Pilot Power front, Pilot Road 2 rear.

They don't call them "shitko" for nothing buddy.
I would rather fancy my chances running a couple of doughnuts.

I guess I just see it differently. They're not Russian Roullette suicide devices, they're just a very hard compound tire with low levels of grip and a high lifespan. In good conditions at the track days, I had no problems taking them over to the point of peg feelers scraping. They don't inspire confidence, to be sure, but perhaps that's just another way of saying they don't cover your mistakes. Particularly in the wet. I've been in torrential rain on twisty roads with them, and if you ride smoothly and pay attention to the road surface, they will hold. People will probably consider it a dubious advantage, but you get to feel out the limits of grip without having to do crazy speeds.
All that being said... when buying tires, get the best you can afford. They are the only things attaching you to the road at the end of the day. I wouldn't voluntarily opt for a set of Shinkos, but they came with the bike and they taught me a bit. I consider that something positive.

Haha, touche. Just got a set of Michelins (Pilot Road 2's, so not the sportiest things alive, but a world ahead of the Shinkos), so I'll be interested to see how the next track day goes. Already finding it a lot easier to get them over on the road, and they seem to hold a line so much easier.

Yes they will be easier to get over.
The main reason is because they are new... They haven't had the middle worn out of the rear, and the RH side worn out of the front.
So everything will be easier.
All that said, the better performance will become more apparent when it rains.
Will look forward to catching up next training/ track day.
