View Full Version : SpankMe - Is the KB server on a real go slow???

crashe

For the last two days, the KB server is taking ages to upload.

All my other browers are loading up real fast.

Im on at either 48,000 or 49,333bps.
Yep I am on dial up.

But its taking so flaming long to even get the thread open or to even add anything to a thread.

Is this happening to anyone else??????

I'm on DSL and getting upwards of 75% packet loss to kiwibiker.
It has been a few websites that have been causing me trouble over these last few days but kiwibiker has been very slow :-/

Hope you can get it fixed with minimal fuss!

Go Jetstream, you'll never turn back to 56k!

Thats a load of codswollip (sp.? hahaha)
The bastards at Xtra, and I'm assuming others, restrict all p2p traffic. So, you can't use file sharing programs! (I like to share my family photos with my nana in SA  )

Or, have they wised up and stopped that shit yet? When I was with Xtra, they still did it.
Why can't it be like the US (I think?) where you pay a fee, and get FULL RATE, unresticted (speed and traffic type) internet! On proper lines with the right modems, you can easily get a 2MB line. 128KB? Gee, thanks alot telecom/xtra/whoever... Whatever will I do with such speed.

not mine!!! when I share my photos and movie with nana I get full speed with DC++ and bittorrent. A movie on torrent takes about 2.5 hours DL time

what was it again TELECON! Need a fuckin gunmint with a pair of balls bigger than helens to deregulate the telecom industry so we can get ahead of thrid world Internet and phone speeds

HEY, if I'm babbling I'm doing well - so no wisecracks :msn-wink:
I was on Jetstart (oops, there might lie the difference...) and decided to change back to dial-up. I guess dial up suits the type of surfing I do.

Ixion
15th May 2005, 22:25
Yeah, it's fucked (note the use of the precise technical term here). Problem's with a site called cogentco.com. Data to and from the kiwibiker site goes through a lot of connections (routers and god knows what) at that site. and it's showing VERY long ping and tracert times, and heavy packet loss. So, basically , data is taking forever to get through that site (sort of like the Auckland Harbour Bridge), and a lot of it is getting lost - which means it has to be resent, so things take even longer.. Need a heavy word maybe ?

The server is running fine and no-one in the US or UK accessing my SV site is reporting any problems, so I guess it must be one of the many servers between here and ServerPronto in the US which hosts my server that is causing the slow network response.

I have noticed it with a lot of internet sites. I use Orcon Broadband here and many sites, especially this and CNN take forever, on most days. However, it can't be just Orcon either because I have a friend down in Christchurch (yes, I do have friends :drinknsin ) and she is getting the same issues. When connecting for a video conference either one of us would keep dropping the cam connection. :whocares:

But on the good hand, LIMEWIRE is downloading crap like a rocket, that is when I am not browsing. :niceone:

Yup, spank sent out an email to everyone:

Kiwi Biker server is down and a fault has been submitted to the service provider.

We will try and get the site back up as soon as possible.

Its still getting there, still having a few time outs.. (but that could be the american routers or sumin, telecoms peering is playing up atm to)

Telecom own all the phone lines and everything to do with them in NZ, apart from parts of Wellington and Christchurch. The stupid fuk-wit commisioner was BS'd into thinking that NZ would go down the drain if he forced Telecom to open up the lines to competition. So the best he did was to force them to wholesale to competition instead and resell what Telecom sell. Utter BS.
Now this thing with jetstream, competition is now allowed to resell jetstream, cos the commisioner wants to boost broadband uptake in NZ, so this is how he thinks it'll be done. Which is total BS. Telecom overprice and restrict the service. Utter BS.
And at the end of the day, all competition is doing is reselling Telecom. Telecom still own it!! And the margin for the competition to survive on? fuk all. Stupid commisioner and stupid Telecom.

I think its a Telecom issue. I heard from up stream that Telecom has been doing routing changes all weekend hence it was really slow, but not sure why it stopped totally yesterday.

I have tried connecting to KB thru a few different providers and all the same.

problems seems to have been from [cogentco.com] was getting over 1000ms tracert's

BTW isnt telecom owned by the people still....Stuff , trade me and this site load up slow on my computer ....seems like the wire out of NZ has a corroded conection ,,,needs a bit of CRC on it

Reading Zapf's post it says to me that it died OUTSIDE NZ. On the weekend it was 10 hops (via telecom) to leave the country from where he started the trace.
Last night (via telstraclear) was 6 hops to leave the country from where he started the trace (and it died), and now it is 8 hops (via telecom) to leave the country from where he started the trace.

That right?

Yeah, the problem was outside NZ. But we'll blame Telecom anyway, cos they are evil and we blame them for everything

Telecom own all the phone lines and everything to do with them in NZ, apart from parts of Wellington and Christchurch. ..... Telecom still own it!! And the margin for the competition to survive on? fuk all. Stupid commisioner and stupid Telecom./rant

Stupid commisioner sure, but with Telescum doing around $2 mill per DAY profit after tax, don't say stupid Telecom. Rapacious Telecom, Evil Telecom, Bastard Telecom but never stupid.

Is this happening again?
I'm getting 75% packet loss to KB, and it has been going on for the past 20 or so hours...

I'm getting withdraaaawl symptoms.
I'm even contemplating going to the BRONZ meeting to get my fix

Really odd. Might have to work out what's happening here in the SI then, as uni, work and home connections seem to keep timing out to KB and running really slowly when I do get on.

oh well... hopefully it is just high user load :-)

Might be a Telecom problem?

Every so often I get the same thing. KB on go slow. Must have something to do with the servers getting a real hammering? I'm on jetstream also, but hey, we are all lucky to have such a great site

If you try using a US proxy (216.159.37.58:80) things will run better. It's just accessing the site from NZ that seems to be the problem.

Telecom needs to sort out their routing.

From London many NZ sites are running slow or timing out over the last couple of days. I'm getting long delays on mail sent to a couple of my USA from NZ accounts , UK to USA is fine so must be paths out of NZ at times, KB is running fine (hosted in the US ?)

Jetstreem has been mentioned. What is the download speed?
Keep an eye out for ihug as iinet here in Perth have bought them out. iinet are now the third largest telco in Oz and offer the fastest ADSL2 on the market. At the moment it is possible to get 12,000kbps, I'm getting 5,316kbps. They are smart cookies and wll no doubt do some great deals.

I'd change server providers, but the rest are more expensive. I prefer a server in NZ, but like most things, it's either not available here or way more expensive.

I don't get any problem at work, but they use IHUG here. My XTRA connection at home has the slow response problem thou.

Anyone with IHUG getting a slow response?

Yesterday morning was a shocker for me...
It took up to ten minutes to upload some pages...

And for some reason it said on this thread that I was trying to open. It kept saying 46 gifs to download... well after 20 minutes of waiting for this thread to open I gave up, as it was still saying the same thing.

I was able to get in last night for a few hours then it played up again..
but today its runing ok again.

Im on Xtra.
