View Full Version : Commute distance/time

I am doing a bit of research that may or may not involve a change of employment.

How far do you commute?

How long does it take you?

What is traffic like?

I may or may not be looking at 45 Kms each way, mostly open road.

Is that reasonable commute?

So far has been an easy 30 mins one way 45 the other.

25k's, door to door.
20-30 mins depending on conditions
At 7.00am down here? Traffic? WTF is traffic?
If there is any traffic I take the centreline.

On Auckland's North Shore 7k's took 50 mins in a car, 65 mins on foot.

I cant give you the exact distance of my commute from Glenfield to Auckland city but, what would take me over an hour by car only takes me 15-20 minutes on the bike thanks to use of the transit lane and some agile lane splitting on the harbour bridge.
Traffic is diabolical from 6.30am to around 9.30am in the morning.

18 kms, 22 minutes. About half of it down a 70kph ring road so quite a pleasant way to start and finish the day usually.

25km each way in the Wellywood traffic so on a good day about 25 minutes. On a bad day 35 minutes.
PS.If you don't lane split you might as well drive a car.

me, 15kms.
12mins.
open road/ expressway.
Number of traffic lights=0.
Number of retards on the road=a lot.
Dead critters=2-8.
Whats the new rule with everyone driving with their lights on during the day now? Quite a lot of the morons even have high beams blazing.
Or is it the same phenomonon as those who indicate wrong at roundabouts? AHHHHH... so many people shouldnt drive that do.
Same goes for breathing and reproduction.

Our kids ride 20mins to school, and they freeze in the winter.

Not so much a commute, but I drive 20 kms to the flooring shop then anywhere from 2K's to 100K's for the days job.
Just depends where the job is really, the upside of the travel is, we get paid for it.

17 km . 10 km of that is motorway. Rest is 14 sets of traffic lights! ( seriously) 2 roundabouts. 15 minutes.

Uh you are meaning commute by bike, not one of them silly cage things ?

3.5km each way.
50 zone for 1k, 70 zone for 500m 100 for 2km, including a 600m bridge....
Takes 3 minutes at 7:20, but 10 at 7:30! EVERYBODY leaves just prior to 7:30 for a 7:45 start!!!!

Takes a constant 7 minutes flat on the push bike! (no need to wait for the traffic).

As for your proposed trip of 45km, that sounds ideal, and would be mush better utilisation for a motorcycle than the 3 minute run I give mine....
Okay, I do have a NS-1 that will be doing the duties from now on (as I got some really good rubber on the CBR, and don't want to waste it)

I forget how long my commute is - it's from Birkenhead to Albania, and takes from 12 to 20 minutes by bike, and a bit longer by car. It often takes longer coming home, because for some reason everyone seems to go to work at different times but goes home at around the same time.
Especially if it's raining, for some even weirder and more unfathomable reason...

I'm lucky though, in that both ways I travel, the bulk of the traffic is going the other way.
It's great!
I love it when I'm doing 100km/h and look over the median and everyone's crawling along at 30km/h. Apart from the bikers sneaking between the mobile four-wheeled chicanery.

I commute from Manurewa to Glendene and back in Auckland. It's a trip of 37 km and generally takes 50 minutes because of the traffic and roadworks at the Onehunga flyover. Can be as short as 45 mins or as long as 60mins depending on traffic.

It sucks but that's how it has to be for now. I'd generally not want to commute for more than 30 mins.

Helensville to Albany Industrial Estate via Dairyflat, 35Km and about 25 minutes. A bit longer in the car (and a lot more expensive)

Sounds like you have a job offer on the Shore?

Rick.

The moment I can actually feel any confidence in the sole of my left foot on the peg for any distance I will be bike  I am still unable to take weight for any time on the ball of my foot, impossible to take any pressure on the arch of my foot. The bike foot peg comes right in the soft spot, I find it enough of a challenge to get on the back of Maha's bike for the now, I can not even begin to imagine taking all my weight and the lean angle of my bikes weight on the ball of my left foot, or even the flat of it for that matter. I have been completely undone by this poxy planter ligament injury, 6 weeks off crutches now, and while I walk well in expensive "proper" shoes complete with orthotic inserts, the normal footwear remains a distant dream. Girly shoes are out of the picture :weep: I love my heels :blip: I might be able to insert the orthotics in my boots though thinking on...hmmmmmm. Put it this way, soon as I can, I will.

It often takes longer coming home, because for some reason everyone seems to go to work at different times but goes home at around the same time.

I noticed that today. I left Albania at 5ish, seemed every other man and his mate did too

Rick.

Close, but no banana, and this may or may not be related to a change of employment. I may even be teasing everyone

51kms each way - total 102km each day. Takes about an hour each way in traffic, sometimes 1 hour 15 mins. I have 20 minutes down a lovely curvey, narrow rural road, then the rest of it is highway, in peak hour traffic.

I happily do it either car or bike.

It was a long way at first, and seemed to take forever. But after a few months I got very used to it, now I don't even think about it (unless I'm running late, which is common). Now I actually enjoy the long distance, and its become a routine that is just a part of my working day.

I would mention that if you are going to taking a car, the cost becomes rather extreme. But on the bike of course, much cheaper. Thats one thing I hate about it, can't take the bike during the colder months of winter as we get black ice right down our road, and the car costs a furtune to keep filling up all that way (and its an echonomical car).

You will get used to it though, doesn't take long to get into the swing of it.

About 13km, 10 to 12 minutes. I refuse to time it because I got in to trouble once trying to beat my get to work time. During the 10 minute morning peak it may take me a minute longer, depending on what the queue is like at one particular intersection.

Shit. I know I am going to time myself in the morning now. You bastards.....

45km is a nice commute distance. On a bike. A car would do my head in.

EDIT - 14.7km, did it this morning in 11 minutes while getting held up at all three sets of signals so not a PB.

Until november last year I teavelled 85ks each way to work, In auckland motorway traffic
The day it took me 2 hours to get to work in the car was the day I resigned
Even on th ebike it was a 45 minute ride
Traffic in auckland was so bloody awful, I would get to work in a right shit mood!!

41km one way Raumati to Wellington 5 days a week

travel before the morning rush but often in the traffic in afternoon, average about 45mins.

Is usually the best two 45minute sessions of my day - southerly storms excepted.

Surely the commute should be relative to the paycheck or perhaps your enjoyment of the job?

Surely the commute should be relative to the paycheck or perhaps your enjoyment of the job?

Like I have already stated this may or may not be to do with a change of employment.

So there are some really different times for commutes. I currently travel 17 ks each way, most in Hazard Counties speed trap area of 80kph, the balance on open road, it takes me 15 mins. Have done it slightly quicker, but mostly allow 20 mins for the fuckers that travel at 10k under the posted speed limit as speed kills :D

R6_kid
24th March 2010, 19:31
Well if it's not a very long travel time and the cost difference isn't going to eat into your (higher?) income, then surely that's all you need to know?

If you aren't going to miss the extra 1-1.5hrs you'll be spending travelling instead of doing other things then go for it. No one else can judge for you how this particular change will affect YOUR life.

BTW I just got a job 4km down the road. I'm going to cycle to work because it'll be faster than driving or taking the bike.

Not sure how far but I walk at an average speed of 5km/h and it takes me 10 mins to walk and about 5 if I take the bike (bike time includes starting and warming it up slightly)

Traffic is non existant at 4am in the morning.

Are you a vampire? Start at 4am? Far canal, what a weirdo

Brrrrrr, thinking on, it is friggen chilly then too, you must have immunity to the cold. I got up last week at 6am for a "pound" up the road and around the get fit block. Could not get my legs warm at all, so instead of my 5 k's I did 3.

How far do you commute? 84km each way. Mangatangi to Albany

How long does it take you? 1hr 10 mins on the bike. 2 hours in the car.

What is traffic like? Slow.

Is that reasonable commute? Compared to mine, yes. I'd be happy doing that.

Don't post much in here. NZ'er living in London. 8 miles / 45 mins / 76 sets of lights each way. Call me fucked in the head but it's one hell of an obstacle course and surprisingly fun.

Sure beats sitting on the bus or on the Underground smelling some sweaty blokes, or worse, some chicks hairy armpit.

10km and 10 minutes when there is no traffic, about 12 minutes in traffic. Nice twisty 50km zone all the way. I often ride very early in the morning and there is no traffic then.

At the moment I am doing 18km about 15 mins. (or about 1hr by train lol)
But from April I will be doing 42km which will end up around 40 mins each way depending on traffic.

The commute to work is the best part of the day. For some reason, communtering home isn't as much fun - maybe because the traffic's heavier. When I worked in Ponsonby, it was more betterer - I took a convoluted backstreet route to work. Didn't save any time, but it meant I was moving most of the time, rather than sitting in traffic, or waiting at lights. That's the key for me, and if I end up in slow, heavy traffic, or the route has too many traffic lights in it, I take side streets to keep on the move.

Mom
26th March 2010, 07:45
I used to commute 30 mins each way. I found it wonderful, as I could gear up for the day on my way to work, and unwind and shake off any work related shit on my way home.

I was doing 142km each way to work - return 284km, 4-on 4-off. Had a nice V6 car on lpg for this, and after I figured out how to deal with the traffic I actually enjoyed it. I NEVER used the bike to commute - even though I had a large sport cruiser - too expensive, too dangerous, 4 different weather patterns between Cambridge and Auckland on any given day - frost/fog/rain/sunstrike. Now, it's a 25km commute each way - I do it at 70km/h on my C90 scoooter, listen to my iPod and chillax, all the while burning Avgas at about 1 litre/50kms.

13k's from norfshaw to Khyber Pass Road. Takes me about 20 mins if I head straight home. If I'm having one of those days and everything clicks then my ride home can take quite a bit longer. :scooter:

Yup, it's the best part of the day, I've even thought about moving further away so I can get more ride time in. :sunny:
