Ive just bought a BMW f650 for some gravel touring and there are a couple of questions that I have about what goes on under the seat....
there is a wee cubby hole in the tail section. Is that designed for anything in particular?
Aso I have found a plastic coated steel cable that is attached at one end to the air box but nothing on the other end. it is like a seat check strap-but not... - ideas please?
and lastly, checking the air filter, looks like a mornings work! It appears that the air box has to be dissasembled and removed from the carbys and the frame then split open and the filter removed? whew!
Also does anyone know if I can get the genuine fairing screws still? they are a raised head hex with a 8mm dia head chrome finish 5mm and 6mm thread. 10mm long.

On my f650 that was for hanging a helmit from.There should be a hook for the loose end to go on.

My wife's previous bike was a low suspension 2005 F650GS. You don't have to take the air-box out. Just remove the indicator and the right side panel. Then remove the two screws that hold the connection piece between air-box and air intake. I think they are torx as well. Pull out the connector and the then slide out the snorkel. This exposes the air filter. Be careful when refitting the air filter. It's easy to pinch the seal, so make sure it's seated properly. Also be careful that you don't pinch the battery overflow hose, if you do and have tip-over, battery acid will spill down the side of you engine. This will leave marks. Don't ask.

The INDICATOR!? what the hell for? that does sound odd! I pulled off the left side - opposite battery side and that seemed the side to work on - but tomorrow I will remove the right hand side and find out what you mean about the indicator...
I guiss the whole batterybox must come out?

I've spoken too soon. Also I do have the manual, but I've forgotten that it's in German. You may find an English version on the net. You didn't say what year your bike was, but on the later models the indicator has to be removed before the side panel can be removed. If you still want the German manual let me know. It's 26MB.

For cripes sake I could be blind but what year/model of F650 did you buy.
I had the 2000 GS model and it was crap to do the basic maintaining to.
My air filter was a crap little paper thing accessed exactly as Kokopelli said.
My battery sat in the middle between the Oil tank and air box.
edit: I type too slow, I see Kokopelli asked what year as well
Mrs jatz had the earlier carberated F650 Funduro model, I think they turn in to the quite different GS and Dakar options and become injected in 2000.

its an oldie but tidy and lo kms- its a 94 with 54km and I got tankbag topbox and panniers with it

Ahh, I can't help much with that then... other than to say do a little research before jumping in to changing the oil, there's bungs and oil hiding all over the place (well at least two places, could be more).

Ahhh "Funduro"
Air filter is behind the l/hand side cover, it just slides out from memory, you shouldn't have to take the indicator off. I'm pretty sure the tool kit goes into the gap at the back.
Oil changes..... bung under the motor, usuall place and another on the down tube at the front, from memory about half way down, you need a short length of pipe to stop the oil running down the frame too.
As for the faring srews you could try the wemoto website.We got some bits for our fuduros from them.

Oh and I found a universal screen bolt kit at Nationwide Accessories that is just identical. 10 screws 20 washers and 10 wellnuts in chrome for $11.70

but it splits horizontally.- the top scews on. The only way to get the top off seems to be remove it from the frame

Hi I had a newer version but many things are similar anyway IMO best source of info is www.f650.org, they even have 3 cds for download on how to do basic maintenance. I have them somewhere and they're helpfull for me.

I had an F650 - can't remember that the air filter was a problem.
From my Clymer manual:
1 Remove seat
2 Remove left side cover
3 Rmove bolts and carefully pull the airbox cover of and move it out of the way
4 Remove the air filter element.
I suggest that you check your water pump - this is the Achilles heel of this bike.
But its a good bike for one-up touring with gravel.
