Hi all,

I'm keen for my girlfriend to get her license but the only experience she has had is on the back of my bike.

Are there any suggestions for a reasonably priced place that can teach her how to stay safe? She doesn't have her own bike.

She can drive a manual car if that makes any difference.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Give Trevor Birchall a call 021 701 466 he is located in Auckland has a motorbike riding company - details are at www.motorcycleriding.co.nz

He can come to you! And has a cool little GN125cc if you don't have a bike. He's a great guy and very experienced and patient.

Easter is coming up. 2 days of supermarket and mall carparks empty of all traffic. Plenty of time to learn the basics.

Hey Mustek,

I would ask your girlfriend what she wants to do. My boyfriend taught me to ride on a dirtbike first which I loved - so much fun :) then we advanced to the road bike.

We borrowed a friends gn250 and had a few sunday morning sessions in a quiet carpark. I felt more than comfortable with him teaching me - I do'nt think I could of coped with on-lookers or someone I did'nt know trying to tell me what to do lol

That would be my suggestion anyway if you can borrow a bike and find a quiet spot where she does'nt have too much to worry about (etc traffic or on-lookers) lol

Good luck - hope she likes it and once she does there is no turning back :Punk:

Cheers tate. I'm hoping to borrow my uncles farm bike soon. Only thing is that it doesn't have a clutch but I think it's a good start.

Your welcome Mustek. I think that's a great idea. I know my main concerns were that I just knew where the brakes were and to throttle off - starting off road worked better for me anyway because I was'nt so concerned if I fell off (which I never did - thankfully) but think it's mind over matter. Good luck :)

Try Tricia, http://www.rcsom.co.nz/Roadcraft%20contact.htm, I've tried out my share of instructors, and she's the most professional, and knowledgeable, whilst being encouraging and very patient. I've not felt safer and more confident with anyone else. She's also got a GN125, or a GN250 for students to learn to ride on.

If shes getting her licence then she'll need a 250 sized bike, so why not bite the bullet and just get her one?

My girl had never touched a bike in her life, came to NZ in Jan last year from Brazil, decided she wanted to ride and did the Basic handling test on their scooters the written test and passed no probs.

She then rocked down to ANZA'a and paid cash for a CBF250 and dropped it leaving the shop. After that they delivered it and she taught herself in a paddock at Massey (lethal on street tyres but she never binned it some how) then progressed to carparks then the local riders took her out on the road. I met her in Feb and she was already riding fine on the road.

Since then shes self taught and observed the rest of us to the point shes done a trackday on my 675 and laughed her ass off and now have a full licence and an 08 R6! Not bad for 14 months ride time.

So your girl, if she WANTS to ride, will ride. Its how most guys learnt, no reason a girl cant either.

Photos show her progression and obvious confidence. She was NEVER pushed into it, she wanted to do it for herself... thats the secret.

I started on a dirt bike, learnt how to ride then got a road bike.
I also had 1 lesson and hour before I sat my full license - a guy called Doug Swanson - he is based in North Harbour - anyway, he is a lovely guy, very calm and reassuring - he is the reason I was so calm and focused when I sat and passed my full license. Can't remember his number but do a google search on motorcycle training.

Any luck in the misses getting her BHS? I provide a bike to learn / test on and have put many Kiwibikers through. We train/test on Saturdays up in Albany.

The AMC has a new instructor Mike Messiter, a good friend of mine. If you wanted to go through him I can PM his number to you.
