View Full Version : Pipe for a 636?

So, I've taken delivery of the replacement for the venerable R1 - an 06 ZX6R in Titanium grey (with the factory hotrod flame graphics!)
She's in awesome nick, and totally original - including the factory pipe. Problem is, she makes a wonderful sound but I just can't hear enough of it. So yeah before someone says it, I'm a plunger and I want a loud pipe.
Now most of the bikes I've owned in the past have already had the pipe changed, and I've never had one with an undertail exhaust before. I imagine that slipons for side-mount pipes are a bit more generic than undertails.
So my question to you, the all-knowing populace of KB, is: what cans are available for the 06 636 and what are they worth? Which ones sound good? Any that you'd avoid?

Yoshimura RS-5, hands-down.
Not offensively loud at idle, which means you can talk to mates or your pillion at the lights without having to hit the killswitch, and yet it fuckin' howls on the track - sounds a hell of a lot better than the other pipes I've heard on 636's too. No regrets, at all.
Buy it off Ebay too, not here in NZ - half the price, even after shipping and GST.
Edit: In particular I'd avoid the Two Brothers pipes for the 05-06 636's - they stick out surprisingly far out the back from under the tail, and look a lot cheaper and tackier than they do in the pictures.
EditEdit: We bought our pipes/PCIII's from these chaps. Very professional service, and very fast - far better than any local NZ service I've had to put up with! http://myworld.ebay.com/deals4twowheels

Actually, Yoshimura USA answered my e-mail within the hour. Which still beats the response time of most NZ companies. :stupid:

It is a great bike! I'm loving it, it's made commuting fun again! I just wish she were a little louder so I could hear her sing!
No dramas about the tool kit, let me know if it turns up.

Cheers for the advice! Did you find you needed the PCIII once you had done the pipe? Or were you planning to do that anyway? I'd rather not remap the injection if I can help it.
Nice bike, a mate has the exact same one with go-faster flames. Kawasaki engines always sound great IMO. With RS-5 S/O only (or even if you change out the air filter) the factory ECU handles it just fine. A PC3 or similar would be the cherry on top. On my list now as well.
Being an undertail, stones will flick up and ding the exhaust now and then (minor). I got a stainless sleeve over a carbon sleeve because it should hold up better. The shiny stainless looks great and it doesn't hurt that they're cheaper as well.
I got mine from BikeGearWarehouse (http://www.bikegearwarehouse.com.au/)

so did you crash the R1 in the end or did it survive the whole ownership period?

MUZZY!!! I had a muzzy on the one I just sold, muzzy half system (from headers back), sounded wicked and looked sweet, combined with a power commander it was putting out 119hp at the wheel, say what you want but thats what the paper said. That would be my pick again if I was to get another.

The R1 made it. I've got the ZX4 for crashing now so I can get it out of my system. it keeps my road bikes safe. (laid it down again the other day on Hampton - most pissing offing - all fixxed again now though)
You really need to come home and come to the track you know. All other things just aren't as much fun.

I'll make it back at some point ... don't worry ;)

OK, next question if anyone's still reading...
All the aftermarket pipes eliminate the "Exhaust Device" (aka EXUP valve if you're talking Yamaha speak). Can anyone who has an aftermarket exhaust on one of these tell me what happened to your low-end torque?
I'm using it as a commuter so if there's any loss of bottom end, I'm tempted to just leave it the hell alone

Hey,
My one had a funny little thing under the seat that used to move back and forwards as you reved the bike, I am guessing it was there to replace the valve thing in the exhaust, maybe the engine doesnt like not having it??? May pay to look into that.
Also I would be looking at a PC or a tune boy, as if its running lean, which it probably would do, it'l reduce the life of the motor drastically.
Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I am not a mechanic but I have spent quite some time around bikes, and my mate owns on of our local dyno shops and he pass's on feed back. I can talk to him about it for you if you get stuck and see what he thinks or can find out.
Cheers

Take a look at the yoshi dyno charts. No loss for the 636. On mine (CBR) the chart shows a dip at ~6k rpm but not noticable on the seat-o-pants dyno so you shouldn't have any problems. The yoshi slip-on also comes with a fitting for the exhuast servo (so does an Akra I think) See install pdf in the link.

Don't ask me what it was stock though.
Still pulls nice and cleanly down low though - and feels much freer up the top.

I have a brand new rs-5 slip-on exhaust sitting in my garage if you want it? Only problem is it dont have the fitting brackets or anything, or the servo motor bracket. A few of the parts needed to fit are on bikegearwarehouse.com.au (http://www.bikegearwarehouse.com.au) but dont know where you get the servo motor bracket? Could maybe machine one up, or contact BikeGearWarehouse (aussie yoshi dealer) or maybe yoshimura directly?
PM for details :)
