I was passenger in a car travelling along St Lukes Rd today when I see a very large black and chrome cruiser being ridden out a drive to the footpath on the other side of the road.

Now I am no longer shocked by riders with shorts, t-shirts and sneeaker, but this one took the cake.
I think he is not going to enter the road without a lid, but my intuition said yes bare head and all he will do it. And sure enough no safety gear at all including a helmet he enters the traffic and rides up the road as we pass him.

We all know the consequences of being hit with no gear at all, his stupidity leaves me pretty well speachless.

Two things have me very very concerned about this thread.

1) WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU DOING IN A CAR???

2) You know the difference between a Harley and a black and chrome thing by now

In my defence Ducky, I can say with all sincerity it was not my car and I did not enjoy the ride, I was doing small children a favour today............... Easter Bunny stuff:yes:

And it could have been a Honda, but I cant's say it was a Honda in case it was a Harley............ you know how Harley riders get upset so easliy :dodge:

Cars do have their uses, we some how came to the conclusion that climbing The Mount would be a good idea......doing it in full bike gear? f**k that for a joke! was tiring enough as it was!

Besides, everone knows harley riders are big hairy patched gang members who wear German WW2 helmets...

I wear a helmet - wouldn't think of going out with out one now, but you know it hasn't always been like that - and I would add that not everyone who didn't wear a helmet fell off, and not every one who fell off with out wearing a helmet hit their head on anything, funny that!

Ditto my other half, she has dealt with kids/teens and adults within funeral industry, has told a few nasty stories of people hit on open roads, hat or no hat didn't matter much for the kids on pushbikes when hit at 80km by a truck.Pretty traumatic for family and those involved,i.e police, ambos, fireys and funeral staff.

Horace
Much to his Mum and Dad's dismay
Horace ate himself one day.
He didn't stop to say his grace,
He just sat down and ate his face.
"We can't have this his Dad declared,
"If that lad's ate, he should be shared."
But even as he spoke they saw
Horace eating more and more:
First his legs and then his thighs,
His arms, his nose, his hair, his eyes...
"Stop him someone!" Mother cried
"Those eyeballs would be better fried!"
But all too late, for they were gone,
And he had started on his dong...
"Oh! foolish child!" the father mourns
"You could have deep-fried that with prawns,
Some parsley and some tartar sauce..."
But H. was on his second course:
His liver and his lights and lung,
His ears, his neck, his chin, his tongue;
"To think I raised him from the cot
And now he's going to scoff the lot!"
His Mother cried: "What shall we do?
What's left won't even make a stew..."
And as she wept, her son was seen
To eat his head, his heart, his spleen.
And there he lay: a boy no more,
Just a stomach, on the floor...
None the less, since it was his
They ate it – that's what haggis is.

Can't recall the year but not long ago, maybe the 70s ( the 70s is all sort if an overlapping blur to me so it could have been) . Well after I started riding anyway cos I rode for years without one , we all did. Wearing a crash helmet was a certain recipe to get a ticket, cops regarded it as proof you were racing.

Late '70s,I believe,I recall seeing a fellow regularly ride past my place without a helmet,on a square tanked bonnie. At the time I had an RD350

The requirement came in in the late 70's, just prior to me getting my license, but it was still very common to see guys without helmets, occasionally I would leave mine off, or even take it with me on my arm incase I want to get a bit serious and do some fast riding - then I'd put it on. The cops didn't always pull you for not wearing one, in fact one local cop thought they were just for hooligans

But I got sick of eating bugs

and my father starting ringing the police and reporting me if he saw me without a helmet

funny how things change; I use to ride in jeans and often just a swanny, but now I feel next to naked with all my gear on.
The couple of times I fell off on the road - it was a bit messy. Back in the early 80's ACC paid to replace my torn swanny and jeans (the St Johns people had to cut the jeans off)

I never wore a helmet then, I did have a good pair of boots and a leather jacket which was protected with a denim jacket with its sleeves cut off.
Mind you there weren't as many idiots on the road then......................just a few of us..................the boots had 1/4 inch thick heel plates to put down at night when passing cars.

Yes times have changed...I remember a date back in the 70's going to vice versa party on bike. He was wearing a ballgown, high heels and fether boa and I was wearing a suit (every pocket filled with a beer bottle). We did get stopped by cops but only to see if we had been drinking beforehand.

Seriously, what is with people crying over what other riders wear? I still can't see how it should be anybody elses business what they wear, or how people can complain about so called stupidity while forgetting how pedantic they sound...
OR - If you're so concerned about it, why not talk to them rather than about them?

It's funny how a few years ago a helmet wasn't even compulsary and now you ride without one you're going to die.Reminds me of when leatt braces came out in MX. They're neck braces, and for the first couple weeks after they came out, all of a sudden if you didn't wear one you were asking for death or a wheelchair. *rider gets run over* - "should have been wearing his leatt"

Actually, if you can't see what I'm saying, I'm not the stupid one. You complain about others making unsafe decisions that affect you. YOU make unsafe decisions (like riding a motorcycle) that affect other people. Why do you still complain when you aren't practicing what you preach? You think you could count the amount of bikers in fault at accidents on one hand? Whether or not it is your fault, you would be safer in a 4X4, if you really care so much about safety

You seem to be missing the point. Everyone has their own standards of personal safety and acceptable risk. While you condemn some for their choices, others may condemn you for yours. Who is to say that you are right and they are wrong?
