Hi all
Need a new set of tyres for a XC race this weekend.
I can get either Shinko, IRC or Vee Rubbers at decent prices
i have vee rubbers on at the mo and i dont mind it on the back as i go through them at a reasonable rate
As for the front one, never again. It feels like riding with a flat tyre.
So my question is, shinko or IRC on the front? and should i try one of them out on the back?
OR should i just go splash out on a good front tyre, pirelli or michelin etc ??
Anyone used these cheapish brands??
Thanks in advance

shinko soft terrain . Awesome front tyre. Good back but they chunk out very quick. They are my first choice. If I still bought tyres ( i get x-race ones free now :)) i would go shinko front pirelli eXTra back (last forever with good grip)

There are a number of things you need to be aware of when using the cheaper brand of tyres. With some the tread will fall apart with others the tyres last well but the side wall gets soft. You just need to find out what the tyre has been rated for and try and stick to it, we do a mud terrain tyre only and in the muddy stuff it does very well but once you start hammering the rocks it doesn’t last long.

Excellent, thanks heaps guys.
Yeah the rear vee rubber chunks out pretty fast too but not too phased as i get them at alright price.
Looks like ill go the Shinko on the front and have a think about the rear
Thanks heaps!

The Shinko 540 is the weapon of choice for soft to very soft/slippery but only on the front. They will break down on the hard but are fairly durable.

my first shinko came off a kxf450, i got it and put it on my crf250, then got moved to my yz250 when i got it. Over a years riding. Was a really good tyre even when worn. The kenda i have on the front now is a different story...
see if you can see a "innova" rear. Dont remember tread pattern. i got one once for $60-70 and was a bloody good tyre. Havnt seen any since though

The 540 is the best tyre I have ever used for the sand or mud, tracks straight under acceloration , does not drift in the corners and breaks late in the corners as well, but yea dont go any where near any thing other than sand or mud .

Keep hearing good things about these tyres, are they any good. Need a rear pretty bad, are they as good as the main brands?

Short answer, nope!
I've used them on the front and didn't find them too bad but on the rear I've found them to wear significantly faster than anything else.
For the rear I'm a fan of the Pirelli Scorpion Extra and the Kenda Trackmaster. Both seem to stand the best chance against the 450 trying to destroy them.
However you have to weigh up the price vs wear..... If you ride for a couple hours every second weekend you might get a few months out of one and at the price that might be worth it. But if you ride every weekend for a solid day I find it better to go with the decent tire. Means I have to look at tire levers less often too and thats always a good thing!

those ones are different to the one I had. That $30 front doesnt look to bad though

Well, cant really give you a full report on what i thought of the shinko unfortunately....
lasted half a lap, front washed out from under me flying down a Hard packed clay farm track for some reason im not entirely sure
either grabbed too much front brake? or the shinko was shite on the hard clay?
dunno, all i know is i got a smashed colar bone, a broken hand and almost a punctured lung!
gotta love the morphine and N2O
