Thats a great road. There is also the SH from Maungamuka through the ranges to Kaitaia. It's also worth exploring the back road from Matauri bay to Whangaroa if you have time and want scenery. Possibly this road is mostly gravel though. edit: no it looks all sealed - this could be a great peg-scrapin' road.

Make sure you go through Waipoua Forest on your way back...oh and the Twin Bridges route up to Kaikohe is pretty damn cool as well...

Done the backroad from Matauri - Whangaroa, Waipoua Forest Road and also the Mangamuka - Kaitaia SH road. Did them all on my own on my own which was not so much fun and not the best safety wise. Now planning to go more off road. Have been looking at Google maps and have found some great looking trails or at least I think I have but don't want to go to far off the beaten track and get caught out without a riding buddy, hence my thread.

What about up the back of Ahipara above the hills? Theres some great offroad stuff up there.
Ahipara beach down the west coast (dunno about this one).
90 mile beach to the sandhills.
East beach from Kaimaumau to Houhora.
Karikari peninsula - stay at the DOC campgroup.

The far north is a huge place to explore. You'll be fine on your own - just don't be an arse and think ahead. Some like-minded person will join ya I'm sure.
