Hi there, So I have a 2000 Suzuki RMX250S, which I'm working towards getting road registered.
Not a problem you say? But previous has cut the wiring loom down to the bare minimum. YAY
So it looks like I've still got the rectifier, CDI unit Coil, and thats about it.
Where should I start? I like the idea of LED indicators, tail lights and Rego lamps.
I could go and order a loom/switchgear from Suzuki, but money is tight, so what kind of options do you think I've got regarding retrofitting?
I have a TrailTech Enduro computer on it, which from what I've been informed, will suffice for warrents.
I would eventually like to have two sets of rims, one small for street and one for offroad, so investigating what is doable on that front.
Thanks a bunch, JohnB.

Start by getting rid of some brumbys, get rid of the big yellow tonka, Next sell the jetski and most importantly quit having a hooker every weekend. That way you will have some money.
Finally get out and ride more!
See you at the Taneatua ride on Sunday?

Heh, the man speaks some truth.
I am not sure about sunday, I'm pretty keen but also pretty skint again this week after a few unexpected money drains. I might go for a jetski now and hassle that dolphin, and see about tomorrow.

In other news, I've been having a go at nutting out my wiring, and I think my Rectifier is poked, but I'm not 100% sure. I'm going to draw up a diagram sometime of what I've got going on, and compare it to what I'd like to get going on....

I have a universal rectifier sat here somewhere but that will cost ya. Wiring? hmm I have an Ag200 at work with a wiring loom, indicators n such. I will get it stripped off for you if u want. Also available is a tail/indicator reg plate holder somewhere.

That'd be shit hot!
I may talk to you tomorrow, at this ride, RMX just needs to be put back together, air filter cleaned and oiled, and possibly gear oil changed.

Oh yeah,
So I think this is a relevant diagram for my bike.

Bringing this back to life. Nearly finished actually, just got your message Dave, might not need that harness, made most of my own out of trailer wiring loom/looms.
I might still call round into your work and say hello though, I am pretty sure my regulator/rectifer is poked, surging between 6~18V DC at slow idle, and ~8V flat when above idle.
I ended up fitting a 0.8a/h 12V battery in the air box, but it isn't managing to charge it.
Just need to sort that out, get a headlight with high and low fitted, and some tyres, and I should be away!
I will attempt to draw a picture of what I've done and take some pictures sometime.

Ok, so it looks terrible, But that is a slightly simplified version of what I have created.

rmx250's are cool ;0

Yeah... I may put some fuses in once I sort this voltage issue, I had wondered if they were nessassary, but there isn't any in the factory wiring so hadn't really bothered yet.
I might try and test the stator windings and regulator/rectifier somehow. Anyone know what kind of readings should I get?

Check and see ( with VTNZ ) if the bike has ever been registered before in NZ.
If so it will have a 17 digit VIN number recorded on the LTSA computer data base.
If it has never been registered before, forget it. It will be all but impossible.
Check back through here and you will find plenty of threads on similar enquiries with all the requirements.

It has never been registered before, but because the first owner had the option at first registration, the VIN# is in VTNZ's system as 'Approved for registration.'
So apparently all I need to do is, pay some money, receive number plate, And go get first warrant.

you should probably get an ac voltage from each coil of anything like 30 to 60 volts ac at a guess ?

I got some specs off the local Suzuki dealer regarding testing the electrical system, my reg/rect failed all but one of the resistance tests, obtained a similar replacement, NO CHANGE.
Stator windings have no shorts to earth, and very low resistance between each other (1ohm). Haven't checked AC output of stator yet....
Mildly confused/frustrated.
johnnybizz
4th May 2010, 22:17
Obtained a stator assembly, swapped that in, NO CHANGE again.
This is where my brain melts.
Only thing remaining is the Rotor? Right?

Turns out, a battery doesn't charge/discharge fast enough in comparison to a Capacitor.
One $5 capacitor later and the battery in the bin, Voltage steady and Pretty acceptable.
Might still need to try a larger capacitor but for the short term all seems ok.
Put a pair of trade-me special tyres on tonight and is booked in for a WOF tomorrow.
So close.

excellent, well done John. How much did the rego n stuff cost you?
johnnybizz
13th May 2010, 20:43
~$220 for plate and 6 months rego
Clean sheet warrent, except for needing to replace front brake lever due to not having a ball on the end anymore, fair call. And required a bit of rubber on gearlever.
Drove it to nightschool tonight and to visit a few friends. Feels like you're doing the naughty, should be illegal.
Getting 100% double-takes from all bystanders, mostly puzzled faces.
VTNZ somehow have the year as a 2010, so I have 12monthly warrents for a few years now too... Awesome!
Pics to follow perhaps, if anyone is interested.

Clocked up around 300km so far, nice enough in the dry, absolutely lethal in the wet, and its been raining all weekend :-o
I think I need to mix up some more twostroke mix!

What capacitor did you use to replace the battery?
johnnybizz
17th May 2010, 21:08
25V 1000uF, is a little underrated though, the lights and things dim a little when everythings on. The guy who looked at my bike said roughly a 2200uF capacitor should suffice, but 1000uF was all he had in the back of his car.
Next time I'm at a decent electronics store I'll get one.

Ok, I'm still around, fettling here and there with the RMX as time/money/interest allows.
Everything was fun and rainbows, I'd taken a few short trips around the area.

A friend of mine even bought a KDX220 for a while which was cool.
Road legal RMX lasted about a month till it went POP.
Was going for a ride to the beach on my lunch break and had a few seconds of warning 'death rattle', then that feeling everyone hates.
Seized.

I'm no expert so I can only assume, but I'm guessing the open road unloaded RPM caused the edge of the top of the piston to pop off.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a28/waimaks/bikes/UNI_0230.jpg
The rings flailed around a bit, met some ports, and the fun stopped.

So anyway, it sat dormant for 6 months while I shifted flats and tried to get my shit together. Barrel was repaired and replated, new std size Wiseco piston, new bearings throughout the bottom end + replace a worn gear or two.
And it went again, Being as paranoid as I am I hardly used it outside of town after that, being too afraid of killing it again at an expense I couldn't afford.
Decided if I wasn't going to use it I'd better sell it. SO in a last ditch effort, have upped the gearing to 15:44, fitted a carry rack on the back (for fuel), got a new WOF, and tomorrow I'm going to attempt to ride to Napier for the long weekend, and back again.

I was going to go tonight and spend a night in the Ureweras, but its raining and I'm a giant blouse.

I'm alive!
I ended up going on Thursday afternoon once the rain cleared. Came off briefly/slowly and broke a clutch lever up around Lake Waikaremoana.
Spend the weekend in and around Hawkes Bay, returned via Gisborne this afternoon. Had wanted to go right round the coast on the way home but the RMX seat is awful/3 day accumulative hangover. That can happen another day.
Picture proof

Good on'ya :weird:
What's the range including the big tank?
johnnybizz
22nd October 2012, 22:13
Umm lets see, I'd worked out conservatively that I could get ~130km per ~11L tank. So I'd need 30L to make the 350km to Napier without having to rely on back country servos/public holidays etc.
The 20L on the back turned out to be a bit overkill, as on the last stretch home from Gisborne I managed 190km and only just touched reserve for the last 20km.
I think I could do 600km on the 34L I was carrying if I played nice. Ended up aiming to cruise between 4800-5500rpm which worked out to be 85-95km/h.
NordieBoy

Much less tiring on the body at 85-90 on an unfaired bike too.
Cruising at a speed the bike and you are comfortable with is the way to go.
