The 300 comes stock with a thermastat which is only used for road use. I have been told by a couple of guys that birchy recommends removing it. Can ya back that up Chris? :D

I still have 10 weeks before im riding again so I can do little random things to the bike haha.

Amping to hit some gnarly stuff dan!

Don't be surprised if the engine runs hotter with the thermostat removed. Water can pass through an engine too fast to pickup heat, if the water pump is any good. Came across this problem years ago on a 350 chev powered speedway saloon car. Despite custom radiators, 100% glycoshell coolant, electric fans and other demon tweaks, the engine boiled over every race. Put everything back to stock - standard chev thermostat, standard chev waterpump, J1 bedford radiator, standard fan with decent shrouds to direct the airflow and plain water for cooling, and the car never boiled again.

I'll keep the origional parts so I can easily rebuild it if necessary. According to the pro's its good to do it, so I may as well ^_^

It's a fairly common mod, although I thought a lot of the guys just gutted the thermostat rather than removed it? Obviously you want to be a bit more particular warming the engine up before thrashing it.

if you can get to the thermostat drill some holes in it this will allow the coolant to flow easyier before the thermostat opens should help it run cooler and keep it standard looking.

The 250 EXC/F's come with the same "issue", guess handy for quickly warming the bike up at the start of an enduro especially in Europe, but makes for amusing viewing watching the Orange machines spew steam, I hear KTM are selling replacement brushes for the electric motor on the 300 now to :).

Well with most crosscountry's you have plenty of time before the race to give you're bike a good warmup. With enduro you're taking you're time around the first stage, which means you dont need to thrash it. It sounds like the pro's outweigh the con's to me.

I'll take out the thermastat in working order as well as all the hosing attached to it. Will just reinstall it in a couple of years when I sell it. Will keep the extra hosing as it is proven rather difficult to come across.
