Does anyone know if indicators have to be orange in colour, or can they be white?
I was pretty sure they had to be orange, but have found some LED indicators online from a reputable supplier which are E-marked yet seem to be white. (these are nicer than anything the local dealers have in store before anyone has a cry)
Can they be white (emit a white light), or must they be orange to pass a WOF?
Feel free to not reply if you do'nt actually know 100% what they story is.
Cheers.
p.s. I am aware of the search function, but i'm not going to trawl through 9000000000 posts in the hope that the info is in a single obscure thread somewhere. Plus laws etc change so I want current information.

Extracted from the Land transport rule for lighting...
6.2 Safety requirements for direction-indicator lamps
6.2(1) The light emitted from a forward-facing direction-indicator lamp must be substantially white or amber.
6.2(2) The light emitted from a rearward-facing direction-indicator lamp must be substantially red or amber.
6.2(3) The light emitted from a side-facing direction-indicator lamp must be substantially amber.

Probably why most modern cars/bikes have orange front indicators - they can be seen from the side to a fair degree.
The oldies have indicators not so visible from the side, they tend to be clear - although some seen to change from year to year in the same body style (HQ Holdens for one) IIRC.

Some lens are white or clear but the LED emits an amber light, I felt free not to reply, but decided to anyway.

ive noticed that too, though mainly on cars. some rear indicators are red, which are a real bitch to see when brake lights are also applied. they should be orange and orange ONLY.

IIRC, I think that's 'Merkin imports - NZ new cars aren't allowed red indicators. Some of the 'Merkin ones have integrated brake and tail lights.

I have an integrated tail-light/indicators. The lenses are clear. The LEDs are white when not powered but some flash orange for indicating and others are red for tail and brake-light.
