View Full Version : Ad on the back of a bus

Was riding along Symonds street on my way to Uni after popping into Colemans and low and behold there was a bus with an ad on the back I hadn't seen before. The ad being "Coming soon to Auckland; motorcycles allowed in bus lanes". No problem there however the motorcyclist isn't wearing any gloves in the ad! Good to see the local councils promoting dangerous riding habits :nono:

Thats how add's are. What about the Ford add where the guy is sitting up front and his smile widens as the engine revs more and more ... and in the end of the add we see his (presumed) 3 year old son in the back seat smiling as "daddy" rev's the engine.... Good one. Go boy racing with the kid in the back.... yahooo

Who watches car ads anyways?

Filled with over-played shite songs and grinning morons.

Why are there never bike adverts?

I downloaded a Kawasaki one which was like banned in the US or soemthing, he speeds past a tractor on a country road which happened to be a cop in disguise, dont see why it was banned :/

Can you post it? And probably banned becouse it could be considerd insulting to cops saying that they drive as slow as if they were in tractors or summat.

Well the problem is that they can't generate enough sales to make it worthwhile. Lets suppose that 2% of 4 million have Class 6 licenses. That gives 80,000 people. Now lets suppose that 3/4 of them have their full. Drops down to 60k. Which is a very small audience for an ad, so they'd have to sell a lot of bikes just to break even. And we all know that usually they don't get into the 4 figure per year number of sales here for a individual bike. Also it helps us as there's hardly any advertising markup.

That's the one where a farmer is caught by a speed camera as the bike triggers it?

I think I have that one...

edit: can't find it. Was an English ad from memory.

Best bike ad I've seen was that English safety one. Was posted on here ages ago. Was really well done, and as opposed to NZ safety ads wasn't patronising.

Although talking of NZ safety ads, I really like that one where the guy digs his bike (and pillion?) out of the gravel.

Both the council who fund those ads and the drongo's who ride motorcycles thinking their hands are indestructible, are totally irresponsible if you ask me.

Indeed ! I only get sent one glove, heard the story before etc so i ride with no gloves for a few days, came off and got a cut on my hand, the double downside is its not even big enough to impress the chicks

but still wear gloves:D

Check out the Yamaha, "obsession" ad during MotoGP on Prime. It's Aussie, I guess.

What about that stupid Fruity Bars ad? Just when we were going to find out about what those museli bars were made of, she bloody trips over and moans and shit, getting everyone to focus their attention on her. What about the Fruity Bars?!

4Bloody oath! What about that damn 'heatwave' my hot water is stuffing up and I was interested in it, then the poof decideds to fall over - the towel the token black chick threw at him must of had posion in it or sumin:wait:!

That obsessions ad from crammmingithard, is filmed all over the world from what I saw, even abit of NZ was shown in it, they freaken over did that ad a simple picture of a R1 rotating on a display stand on a white background, then flash to a black background remove the stand and have 'Want one yet?'.
I still wouldnt, but sometimes the simplest appeals to a wider target group, that obsessions ad just shows how up themselves crammingithard are.

(dont bite)

Now now kiddies, ACC has to have something to spend our levy's on. And think of the boozie ad agency lunches they can enjoy.
And they work! I've stopped showering, wandering around the house talking to my choccie bar and I never climb high ladders anyway.
If only they had an ad about standing on chairs to change light bulbs, that would have saved a week of pain.

Ok this bit below I have copy and pasted from another message board that I go to. There is a advert on tv in Australia at the mo... I would love to see it shown over here in NZ.

Quote "to all you bike lovers - theyre running pretty good ads here with a changing places theme on the road. It shows a car driving a car getting frustrated with traffic then getting even more peed off with a bike behind him, then it shows the bikes version etc. Towards the end of ad, it shows the car forcing the bike to skid after cars frustration got the better and it turns out its the car driver on bike. Hopefully you get the gist - pretty good ad." end quote.

I thought the money went on the first aid kits we got on the SH22 rally. Possibly the most expensive band-aids ever.

How about ACC does a modified version of the "Fruity-bars" one...

Pretty much unchanged except for the voiceover at the end where it could go "Avoiding accidents can be as simple as looking where you're fucking going"

Sory wolf but something THAT genious is far beyond the total mental capacty of the ACC.

Isn't that the whole piont of the ad?

No, it's about keeping the floor clear of obstructions so you can happily wander around your house mugging at the camera without fear - its kinda like the moves to get all adult material of the 'net (anything not fit for Sunday school kids, not just porn) so you can let your kids surf the web unsupervised.

Whoever wrote that ad was obviously not a parent - no parent would script an ad suggesting you can clean up after kids. OSH and ACC would have a conniption at our house - hazards abound but we have a safety process in place called LWYFG - "Look Where You're Fucking Going" - it's really amazing the amount of toys you don't stand on/trip over when applying it.

To get back to the original raison d'être of this thread, the advert on the bus is possibly designed to sway public opinion against the idea (I'm sure the regional authority or whoever it is that controls the busses is against the idea) by depicting bikers as morons with no idea of basic safety.

"Look Mabel, eejits with insufficient protection are going to be riding in the bus lanes..."

Maybe I'm just a cynical old prick, but I often eschew Occam's Razor in favour of suspicion when it comes to people likely to have an agenda.

But Hanlon's law is based upon Heinlein's Razor isn't it?

Puzzlement. My understanding of Occam's Razor is "the simplest explanation is usually the correct one" - the simplest in this case would be they just hastily grabbed any old pic of a biker and sent it down to the ad room to get incorporated into the poster; whereas my contention was they, with malice aforethought, sought a picture that portrays bikers in a bad light and put it out there to discredit us in the eyes of the general public, thus making their own viewpoint more tenable - not exactly a simple explanation.

Though it could be said that I am also ignoring (breaking?) Hanlon's Law/Razor, I was more concerned with my convoluted explanation than with inappropriate (???) attribution of malice - since I firmly believe that accusations of malice, where thes SoBs are concerned, are seldom wrong...

Correct, but Hanlon's fits better. "Thou shalt not attribute to malice that which is equally well explained by ignorance or stupidity"
