how to check what year a bike is,by the number stamped in the frame of a bike? I bought a bike and was told it was a 85,now been told it is a 83,any way I can check that please? vin number apperently dont mean anything. tia

google frame number, seperate years will have different numbers

it is a yamaha sr250 3y9-020706

3y9 is the model, google that and see if you can find a listing of serial numbers vs production year.

looks like its an 83 at best, they stopped making them that year, so could be 80-83, havent found any frame number info on it

EDIT, yeh what neels said, and the 3y9 model was 80-83

It could be 81 through 83, but couldn't see any with that model later than that.

So it was probably an 83 that was first registered in 85

My bike is registered as 87 even though they were only sold as 88 onwards. Its a messy system!

thanks ...yes...I found it aswell....between 81 and 83,even though the VIN plate says...85, it is just that I bought a part and it didnt fit...as I said...it is for an 85 bike......nevermind...waiting again now for it to arrive from Australia...at least I know for sure now that it is an 83, as the mechanic told me so...just wanted to check he was right...thanks all !!!

A yamaha dealer might be able to tell you exactly what year if you give them the frame number.
