How do american prices and safety standards compare?

I'm going to america for 3 weeks holiday and was wondering how does the prices on their gear compare to ours and what about their safety standards?

If you're going there, they'll be cheaper. Apart from helmets, I think most of the gear you get here is the same. I think the high-end helmets (shoei, arai etc) are different for the states so they can fit their big heads :D I only assume this because they have different model numbers which I would think meant slightly different.
