View Full Version : Oversized genitalia on Maori carvings

Ok, who has not seen one of these and had a bit of a giggle to yourself?

A Hamilton dad is protesting about carvings with the thread-titled appendages. He said it was not easy to explain them to his 3 under-10 year old children when they came across them in the garden display. I thought one of the kids response "Is that a penis?" very mature for someone that age - correct use of terminology, apparently un-embarrassed by the question (I say "apparently" as there is no indication one way or the other when reading the text).

My first reaction (knee jerk) was one of gosh yes, how come these protuberances can appear out of nowhere and be in our face (so to speak) without any form of protest. But after reading the dad's reaction to the fact that he wouldn't complain about European nudity in art "because everything is kept in proportion" it made me wonder: do we get up in arms about the proportionality of it, or the nudity in general? I mean, puritans through the centuries have defaced even "proportioned" nude statues because of the display of dangly bits. Funnily enough nude women representations don't seem to cause the same reaction.... I wonder if that's because (as I read in an informative magazine once, which despite lots of provocative pictures, I was reading the articles....ahem) womens genitalia, being more internal, isn't as obvious as male therefore more 'discreet'.

So how about it kb'ers. Are we just being prudes due to social, cultural and religious doctrine or is there something inherent in many of us which consider modesty good and desirable? (Try not to get this sent to the RR thread if possible).

Some people will find any reason to complain.

Looks like his kids were more mature about it than he was.

would be nice if dad would complain about something worthwhile....this story makes headlines.

why is it that people in general do find the naked body so abhorrant they need to hide it and make it a dirty thing to be hidden and never to be discussed...must have been an upbringing thing.

Personally, I dont' see what the fuss is about, it's a beautiful Maori carving and you know what they say about the darker skinned males members of society.

There was an uproar years ago in Tokoroa about a Maori carving with an oversized cock.

funny what happens when a reporter has way too much time on his hands, and the the father seriously needs to get a life.

Nope your last part is mostly misleading, but what they do say about darker skinned males is that, they bash their kids, wives and any other member of society, steal most things and spend heaps of time doing nothing in jail

Maybe the dad complained because he doesn't feel comfortable about talking to his kids about sex and appendages. Some people are just up tight about the human form and all the other 'icky' stuff. So when they see these pieces of art it puts them in a potentially awkward situation. Or it could be that he is insecure or that he is a puritan or it could he because of his religion, who knows.

Don't tell me, you're going to take up riding naked?

Personally I think the carvings are in poor taste and Speedo's should be fitted to all such carvings without delay. Whatever happened to modesty and chastity?

Seriously though folks, how come a minority group can place such carvings in public places but if you get your willy out on a Saturday night in some bar (oh, bad pun) you get arrested?
Weird...

Only thing that bugs me is that you put up a pic of a nekkid person and watch the uproar...I mean hell, the uproar over boobs on bikes is a good example of the reaction to partial nudity.

Carving/picture/person what's the difference?

At least be bloody consistent...

Where are the carvings of a female with an oversized vagina???

Huh?

Where is the equality in this country!

Some people really do need parenting licenses. The kid asks what it is, you tell them. They ask if it's a penis, you tell them yes. I mean what other options are there?

What I thought too. Amazing how some people think a god that allegedly created the rest of the animal kingdom (bonobos, f'rinstance) is going to be all precious about human sexuality.

Time we collectively got comfortable with our bodies, there would be a lot less trouble about if we did.

Perhaps you should carve one and display it in your front yard. I do wonder what would happen... :)

Thats how they get their women horny - put up pictures of big wangs everywhere. Why wouldn't that work?

Anyway, all the father has to do is say to his 8 yr old daughter is say "thats a wang, dear - all men have one" and move on.

Hone Harawera tends to confirm this theory.

A maori once told me that the erect penis on Maori carvings was in direct proportion to the mana that the tribe (iwi) gave to spirit (god) etc or power that was portrayed. 'She' jokingly suggested that it was also to attract the 'wahine' from other iwi. Either way, true or false an erection is just the precurser to breast feeding.

One of my lost images is a photo of an asian with a positively monsterous erection. I'd post it myself but with all the shit going on with lost images, icons etc (I realy have to get this sorted) and the diffuclty of even logging onto KB without going into the ins and outs of this SM might still have a copy of the photo that I posted. I tell ya gals this thing could kill ya. So if someone wants to ask him.............I would but I'm not too sure he has entirely forgiven me..............but I live in hope..
