as you come out of your road, is bloody scary. Yesterday had to pop out to pick up my bike, on the back of Geordies, and this hoon in a white flash Subaru Forester overtaking on double yellow lines, could only give us the fingers ... what for... cause they are brainless twats... and they were heading to Waiuku/Kingseat way... grrr watch out Franklin folk for this car, they have no regard for human life!!!!!!

The lesson for today is that it always pays when turning left to look left before you go in case somebody coming from that direction is overtaking.
Yellow lines or not, if there isn't a physical barrier to stop them, there's no guarantee there's nothing coming.

When I see a vehicle overtaking someone else on the open road, and the overtaking vehicle is in 'my' lane, I slow down and move over to the left of the road, just as a precaution. Call me paranoid if you must.

I'm always damn careful overtaking where there are side-roads. Thats a good reason for you (on a bike) to stay as close to the centerline as possible when overtaking - even if someone does come out of the side-road it's largely a non-event, and they will get much more of a fright than you will. Regardless of the hue and cry I receive, I find the center-line to be a really safe place during an urgent situation.
And um yeah you must always look both ways coming out of side-roads - never assume.. a nasty way to gain that little snippet of experience though. Glad you are ok.

The thing is we always look left as it is a 70km road, that people like them do 100km, you have to be vary wary... they luckily passed in time, how many white suburu foresters on the franklin roads driven by idiots, curious? If I had been on my bike I would have more than like given the finger back, rolls eyes I have to stop that.

You need a T shirt like this over your leathers (saves taking your hands of the bars every 5 minutes)

Nah mate, being pillion is great fun for hand gestures. I have a whole raft of them I use with great gusto when someone trys to wipe us out. There is a woman simewhere in greater Auckland that will never, ever flick a cigarette but out the window of her car ever again , not only did she get a gob full from the driver of the car, she got a fairly pointed series of gestures from me as we rode alongside the car on the motorway a while ago :innocent:
There was not even the fingers involved :D

100% of them.
In fact, I think there is an industry requirement that states the purchaser must show a valid idiot certificate at the dealership before they let him or her drive one away, in any colour.

This happens to me almost every day.
I ride over dyers pass outside Christchurch to get to town-work. On most days I have to avoid some tosser in a car who is in the process of passing cyclists or a group of cyclists and is driving on the wrong side of the bloody road. Now don't get me wrong, I don't blame the cyclists. I do blame the tossers in the cars who just have to pass in blind corners, or are happy to cross into my lane on the correct belief that I will (have to) move over.
The other group that I meet on the wrong side of this road on a less but very regular basis is usually fat, old, male, morons in 4WDs who like to take "racing lines". It's this lot who really bother me because they don't have the skills and/or their vehicles handle so badly that they can't get their bloody vehicles onto their side of the road before I have to brake to avoid a head on. If Possum could not avoid these idiots what chance do I?
The very worst one recently was a camper van that was taking racing lines on this road one morning. Well he swerved to his left and I braked and I just got around him only to find that there was some other cretin FCV (F***ing Camper Van) following the exact lines of the first one who could not see why his mate swerved suddenly to the left.
Quite a little rant on my part.
