View Full Version : Sewing machine to thumper in one swift "I just didn't see you"

Ok so been a while since i've been around but am still lurking in the deep dark places.
About a month ago was taking the missus into work on a two lane road on the left hand lane. Stopped traffic in the right hand lane and true to form all of a sudden there is a car about 2m in front of me shooting into a driveway. Apparently the guy in the stopped traffic waved him through and his wife said it was clear. Did a very impressive stoppie in front of a bus stop with onlookers into the side of his car. The missus bounced off the roof while I thought i'd see what headbutting a car door felt like.... I wouldn't recommend it. Did everything right and so only walked away with a concussion and some pulled muscles and the missus had a bruise or two but nothing else. Full pay out due to his fault but it meant I was in the market for some new wheels.
Bought the 6 back as it was only cosmetic damage and after the parts arrive from the states there will possibly be a road/race bike for sale.
In the mean time I bought myself a thumper....
First thou ... first twin and I got me a Mille R (thats the one with all the tastey bits)
Kinda got done a bit as I'm finding all sorts of problems with it but after chatting to some aprilia lads I think i'm gonna put in the time and work and try get her back to her former glory if not improve her....
Pics to come... at some stage.

I’m sending this post from Middlemore hospital on my laptop.
Had the exact same thing happen to me on Monday 19th , instead this was on Ti Rakau drive with 3 lanes going north bound. 2 lanes stopped with traffic.
My lane closest to the curb was free flowing. Going about 40-50kmh. Flash: car comes through the parked traffic from the south bound traffic in front of me. I had very little time to brake. Went straight into the side of the car and flew over the bonnet. Think I flipped twice landing on my bum. Thank god for leathers. Helmet did its job too. Don’t know how this works but the bike was still standing up in front of the car but was facing the oncoming traffic. Still running too.
Anyway I have a compression fracture in my lower spine, and a chip of bone of one of my fingers. I will be off work for about 4 weeks and in a brace. Luckily I don’t need an operation. Back will never be the same though. It was very sore that morning. The pain killers are working.
Had a yellow visi vest on too. What the hell are you meant to do in this country ride safe? This is about the 6th time I’ve been off 4 have been caused by other idiots on the road (can you believe one was a hit and run and the other by someone who was drunk, no license, warrant, rego and insurance)
Bike is a absolute mess so it’s probably a right off. The front fairing was hanging by the wires.
I have to admit the Police have been very good (yes I have seen the news - not good). The woman will get a ticket of some sort but maybe more since its now caused injury. A slap on the hand basically.
Riding in this country is screwed. The cage drivers have won.
Cheers

Unfortunately that seems to be the case more and more often these days.

Ahhhh shit bro.. that sucks.
Was wondering where you had been hiding. The guy that did it to me got a $150 fine for failing to give way while turning right... doesn't help pay for the month of chiro and doctors visits for headaches and back pain... On second though I probably should have taken the ambo's advice and gone for a taxi ride to the hospital but they still wacked me with a $70 call out fee that I gotta still pay.... would hate to think what it would be if I had taken them up on thier offer.....
I probably would have jumped off my bike and tried to clear the roof If I had been by myself but with the missus on the back I just tried to scrub off as much speed as possible and then put myself between her and said muppets car... probably only hit doing about 30km but I did bounce back a far way hahahaha
you gonna be bike shoppin again soon??

I went to the A&E next to where the crash happened via ambulance. They took a x-ray there and saw it was broken so they got another ambo to middlemore.
Will be interesting to see if I have to pay twice. I should have gone straight to Middlemore to save 4 hours of mucking around.
Yea hopefully I will be riding again. Once you have the bug it’s hard to stop. The only problem being each accident gets worse and worse each time so it seems. I hate cars.

did anyone else read the title as "Sewing machine to jumper in one swift "I just didn't see you""
I thought you'd taken up speed knitting or something Jonno!
Glad you're ok bro.

Ahh the official announcement!
Guys - keep in your mind as part of defensive riding/driving that the situations described above often result in accidents. Anywhere there is a significant speed differential between multiple lanes in the same direction, you need to expect shite to go wrong.
Save yourself!
Sucks for both of you (hopefully everything is paid out ok). But look out for yourself, no-one else is going to!

Bad luck glad your going to be OK
Just a thought
Is the ambulance fee compulsory? I thought not and shouldnt ACC cover that?
If I am wrong (does happen) send the bill to the drver that caused the accident

According to the letter recieved the ridiculous amount of ACC I pay as part of my rego doesn't cover the entire cost of the call out even though it was an accident and this is why I get stung with the $70..
Yes I should give it to the driver concerned but that is just way to much effort..
As for the pillion seat thingy I have it at home... cowl clips off seat clips on.

hahaha no it couldn't I was doing about 45 and was watching the line of cars for just such an event. The turning car was hidden by a van from my sight and the turning car also turned at pace rather than slowly going through to check if it was clear. If he had stuck his nose through and looked he would have seen me and I would have been able to go round the front of him instead of having a car suddenly appear 2m in front of me....
I'll make sure them tomatoes are rotten before throwing them at ya...
Well at the moment it's a bit average but with a little time and some TLC she may just become a very sexy weapon....

Simple, dont ride. 80% of motorists in this country have no fuckin idea what they are doing. After being seriously hit by an asain driver who failed to give way and didnt even know what hed done wrong (resulted in broken femur in 3 places and almost loss of my leg)
I have given up riding on the roads. Ill stick to stunting off the streets where if i get hurt it will only ever be my own fault.

Hope it doesn't do what yours did.... but it does seem to have oil leaking problems hahaha...
yip and this one definately sounds like a tractor.... Although I really want to convert it to the twin pipe akro system, not sure it's worth the 2k and I don't really like the piping so might see about making a custom one... but that is for future plans

As far as the ambo bill goes, if you are transported, ACC pay the bill, if you are treated, advised transport by the trained medical professionals and choose to turn that advisement down, then you do get a bill. For the guy who was transported to the A&E, no you will not get a bill for either trips, the first is ACC covered, the second is also ACC covered.
