It's fucking awesome! I haven't bought an album of "new" music in about 12 years. Until today. If you like real rock 'n roll, this is a must hear.

Guitarist of Guns 'n Roses, in case you weren't being ironic.

I'll take your word for it and give it a listen at some stage, but I got a negative vibe when Slash was described as "one of the most influential guitarists...." blah, blah, blah. Whatever.

He has moments of brilliance but 'influential'? I don't think so.

However, if it's as good as you say I'll give it a whirl.

He influenced a terrible generation of noodlers who need haircuts and t-shirts that don't have band logos on them.

P.S. Hans, if your idea of 'real' rock 'n' roll is a ridiculously commercial group that can't write a non-cliched song to save themselves, well... I guess KB is the right place for ya.

Got it the day it was released in NZ and have been playing it in the car, on the computer and on the home stereo since..... It's a pearler, best new stuff I've enjoyed for quite some time. No two songs sound alike thanks mostly to the variety of different artists that colaborated with him on all the songs both writing, singing and playing. It's awesome, and I love it!!! :woohoo:

Yep. It's the way he wrote the songs to suit the individual singers. The songs very obviously reference the sound of the band they sing in and then build on that style. A good example would be the riff on Crucify the Dead, which is almost identical to Paranoid. I couldn't give a shit if some people think it's "not progressive" or "alternative/intellectual" enough. I like it exactly because it sounds like the 70s 80s and 90s.

My thoughts.

Its well recorded.
Very middle of the road
Demonstrates how a number of has-beens could have extended their golden years if they had the material and people (The singer out of the cult is a prime example)
Uneven as all these "Guest-star" albums are.

Doubt I'll listen to it again, I suggest Slash just joins Wolfmother.

I agree, they make an oarsome sound together!

I am a fan of the new Slash compilations, got my Tee, and the CD from the states, just waiting on my signed album to arrive! Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Afraid not, I'm hoarding CD's for prosperity.

Given it 20 or so spins and now it joins its brethren on the shelf.

Before they released it officially it was being streamed for free on the internets. I let it run for a day, and have not bought it. The musicianship is certainly above average. and it has a bunch of GnR guys and theres a Dave Grohl track. I thought I would hate that song that Fergie sings on, yet its not too bad. I am a Black Sabbath fan, but the Ozzy track is awful. Poor Oz is a spent force, sadly. The last listenable thing he did was his under cover record in 2005. (my opinion). The rest of it is just meh. They did put the best song up front, the one Astbury sings on. It sounds like an out take from Electric (by far the best Cult album IMO)

If you like this CD and you havent already got it, check out "Probot" from a few years back: Dave Grohl's tribute to the metal he grew up listening to, with the original people. Its REALLY good.

Keep an eye on this site: they will often stream interesting CD's in full prior to release.

thats a link to the new Willie Nelson CD.

There is a new Black KEys record also, called "Brothers" The black keys were a GREAT live show.

Yeah well, Probot. Dunno. The likes of Sepultura and co. are not to everyone's taste either. Certainly not mine. Don't really like Dave Grohl either. To me, he's one of the "new folk" too. But then, so's just about everyone after Led Zep. At least as far as Anglophone rock goes. Sadly there's an awful lot of awesome music most people here will never get to listen to, or appreciate, just because it's not in English.

Ha, Axl destroyed GnR. Sure his distinctive voice and intense stage presence put GnR on the map, his ego and 'issues' killed the band. Slash, Duff, and Izzy wrote a lot of the tracks so deserve a lot more credit than they get.

Guns and Roses was simply the sum of its parts, and as each part was replaced the force sapped out of them. Axl could never have done it without the band that they were back in the day.

The solo Axl album is a showcase for everything that is wrong in corporate American music. Its almost as bad as the commercial pap that Ozzy releases every 3 years.

Slash is very over-rated, But he is a guitar icon for the masses, and they could have done worse.

Dave Grohl one of the "new folk": thats awesome: Nirvana broke big in 1991, and he had been playing professionally for some years prior to that. but I guess if 25 years or so meets your definition of "new" then OK.

I do take your point about "not in english" in that one of my favourite "new"* bands is Rammstein, and they only have a couple of English songs. Doesnt matter. (also one in Spanish).

You're not one of those people that thought music stopped in some given arbitrary year are you? Like "Pop music has been shit since 1971 when the Beatles broke up" or "Music has been shit since 1978 when the Pistols broke up", or " Its all been crap since John Bonham died" or "Since Bon Scott died, its all been shite". I'm not interested in a flame war, just curious.

I used to have an opinion that all music other than punk rock was crap, and a very narrow definition of what "Real" punk rock was. Then I grew some ears. (ears in this context meaning "being prepared to listen to something to see if I like it and if i do, listen to more of it: the first "other" genre I liked was ska, others followed)

Pardon the minor thread dredge, but I've just listened to that. Fuck but it's tedious. Might as well listen to Creed. (OK the guitar solo is a bit better than Creed, but still...) Is the rest of the album the same, or is some of it worth listening to? :dodge:

I was never a big sabbath fan more Judas Priest and Maiden for me - but the Heaven and Hell stuff is awesome. I love the kind of doom sound. Grinding guitars. I am picking that one up this weekend. Not new. But will be new to me.

For the Chinese Democracy haters, I didn't mind it.I like GNR (lies, appetite and Illusion), not a fan of Slash's solo stuff. I rate Chinese Democracy above Meh-tallica's last effort. And that hurts to say as Puppets is my favourite metal album of all time.
