You may also want to check that you are up to date with Microsoft Updates... sometimes when there are updates pending i've noticed IE slows down or hangs until the updates are applied. XP should be pretty solid... Like sinful says, could just need a defrag and general tidy.

Second the "good clean-up" comment
&& defrag the disks
if your motherboard will allow it, upping the Ram to 4GB will almost certainally give a performance gain

I
Run AVG
How do I add more memory ?? AVG free ?
Did it once have Norton ? Cause Symetec corp (norton) will still have processors running in the background even if it aint operational which with AVG on your system the two clash and bind the IE up (or so i have found)
Do you mean virtual memory cause at 200 gig you have a lot of space on your hard drive, cant see you filling that up with what you have been using !
Take it, it is xp you have on ya pc ? if so Open "my computor" down in the green start button, then hold cursor over the C drive, it should say free space ... then total size 200 gig !
If your having a yellow pop up coming up that says your virtual memory is too low, it deffinately needs a clean up !

First you need to know what type of RAM (random access memory) you are running. Then you need to know how many ram slots you have left. I doubt very much that you'll need 4gb (you currently have 1GB) as you won't be using any software that requires that much memory. On XP 2GB should be plenty.

I ran Adobe Premier video editing on my XP machine with a slightly higher spec processor and 2GB and it never struggled, so you'll fly through. I'm not sure if there is method of identifying ram type from inside windows, so you might be best to take the side cover off and without touching the ram stick identify it from markings on it.
Click here for different ram types. (http://www.computermemoryupgrade.net/types-of-computer-memory-common-uses.html)

The problem your having is with the virus protection mate i'll put money on that ! AVG free sucks and dont stop spyware, add the fact Symetec (norton) will still have processors running that combo of chokka full of spyware and avg free will slow ya to a snail pace !
Be intersested to no what processor speed ya have being 6 yrs old !
Go to start again and then click on controll panel, then click performance and maintanance ! at the top of the list should be see basic information about your computor ! click that and an appelet opens with system info tells you at the bottom !
Like mine says 2.80 ghz, 512 mb of ramm !
Download that advanced system care link i put up and that should clean the abundance of spyware you have slowing ya down !
If ya want to delete AVG and try some other free protection, i can give ya step by step to delete avg and any norton that left in there !
And two other links that will protect ya pc ! Tried and true lol i have been to some NASTY nasty sites and they have kept me viral free so far lol !

Just to add, unless the machine is actually quiting on you, for what your needs are you don't need a newer computer. Update your ram, clean out any spyware, defrag regularly, and save yourself some money. You do mention gaming as a future possibility, your machine will run plenty of titles just fine. If you were an avid 'got to have the best' gamer you'd be updating graphics cards/motherboards/processors every 6 months.

For more information about your system I thoroughly recommend System Information for Windows (S.I.W.). It is small, standalone (doesn't need an install) and can be run from a floppy disc, flash drive or whatever. It gives complete and interesting information about all aspects of your computer system. You'll find out such useful facts as your fan speed and internal temperatures. You can also check how much ram each slot in your computer can handle and what type to use. A most handy tool indeed!

Well if you deleted norton, no need to tell ya how to go into the start menue and open add or remove programs to delete AVG then lol
But the protection i'm using is Avast free virus protection (http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=avast+free+&tag=srch&searchtype=downloads&filterName=platform%3DWindows&filter=platform%3DWindows)( like avg the free vrsions only cover you for trojans etc not spyware so ya need something to clean that shit up too)
For spyware i use two first is the advanced system care (http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=advanced+system+care&tag=srch&searchtype=downloads&filterName=platform%3DWindows&filter=platform%3DWindows)
And to pick up any extra spyware (sometimes just one misses a few) i use adaware (http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=adaware&tag=srch&searchtype=downloads&filterName=platform%3DWindows&filter=platform%3DWindows)
When ya open the link it takes you too cnet.com downloads which test and rate all these free things ! Dont just hit the yellow start download button lol that aint it !
Scroll down a couple of inches and you'll see the different downloads, the free ones are at the top of the list on the three links i have here !
If ya keep em updated and use em daily they keep ya clean as !!

Get rid of Windows and get Linux. The Ubuntu version is great, it's faster than WIndows, and you don't really have to worry about viruses, spyware, or any of those security risks associated with Windows. Since it's open source, you don't have to worry about dodgy Windows hacks, or stealing a legitimate Windows key.

Just as an extra i also have loaded on my pc (not that i use it often) Malwarebytes (http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=malwarebytes&tag=srch&searchtype=downloads&filterName=platform%3DWindows&filter=platform%3DWindows)
If by chance malware like a keylogger gets in the system, the adaware finds them but sometimes cant delete them, (when ppl say they chased a trojan around their pc for days they aint kiddin, the bloody things jump from file to file avoiding detection) Have found malwarebytes to nab em where others didn't !
Ahhh the life ! Might do a back up and delete my virus protection just for the challenge lol
Edit : Awww and i did notice you have a disc E there with massive amounts of space ? I take it that that would be an external drive where you keep business records etc ?
If so, you have the amount of space on the pc that you don't need it othere than back up, i would keep that unplugged and have a file on your C drive that you can cut and paste into E, when your off line and know your pc is clean, once a month or something, so no gremlins get in there when you open a dodgy email and destroy business records ! Oh and back up your back up to disc now and then in case that fries also lol !

If you want to get a little more techy, this site (http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm) lists various components in Windows that you may be able to disable depending on your requirements. Not critical, but it can help boot times along and make things a little more responsive.

Personally I would get measured for one. Avoid places like Rebel or Stirling sports and go to either a pro shop or a specialist club fitter.
You do need to decide if you are after the older heel type or the latest half round versions that are becoming more common. Then you need to look at budget. If you are playing of scratch then you really need to invest a good deal of money to get the right length / head / weight ratio. A higher handicapper would not needs as much empahsis on this.
But, whatever you do, try try try before you buy. It is an important club, games are won and lost if you dont have the right kind in yout bag. Anyone can drive a ball 300 metres but the game really starts when you are 100m from the hole, and it would be such a shame to drop vital shots because you didnt take enough time in making the right choice....
eh.......?
What........?
Oh fuck, sorry.....thought it siad 'New Putter Help'......wrong thread, sorry.........
