Two years after a statue of William Harley, co-founder of the Milwaukee company was commissioned to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Harley Davidson factory and its connection with the family which originated from Littleport in Cambridgeshire, it has finally been put on display.
The £20,000 was originally unveiled in the Centenary celebrations of 2003, but minutes later was taken back to the workshop of the sculptor.
All is not good news however, as the organisers of the annual Littleport Harley weekend have issued an ultimatum to villagers to support the event – or lose it forever. "If we can't see a strong commitment by the next committee meeting on June 10 it will be consigned to the bin," warned Harley Weekend committee chairman, Mike Clarke “I am not prepared to subsidise it again. If the people of Littleport and the surrounding area want the event to run again now is the time to work with the original organisers. This event brought in a considerable amount of money to the local economy and there would be an impact if it were lost.”
