I started when I was 14 and stopped when I was 16.
What's the point?? I'll gladly take the extra money off you if you don't know what to do with it.
I have my reasons for doing it, and I'm not inclinded to share them.

Good one, Mate.
I'm very impressed with the poll result so far...two thirds don't smoke!
I've found the trend at work seems to be less guys are smoking and more gals are, and considering, at my work, guys outnumber the gals quite considerably, that's amazing.

I wsa considered vey odd and suspect because I didn't smoke. As Mr Motu says , everyone did.
I didn't simply because after trying it for a month or so when I was 16, I concluded that it was ridiculously overrated, and did absolutely nothing for me.
First ciggy " Oh wow, I'm gonna smoke a cigareete. I'm cool yeah - smoke smoke smoke - Uh when is this supposed to feel good ? ". No sick, no buzz, no nothing. Second, third etc. Just tedious , boring and tasted bad. Never got any sort of buzz or anything else. Stopped bothering after a month , just a waste of time and money.
While smoking remained universal I'd sometimes accept one if offered and smoke it (even carried a pack to reciprocate) , it was easier than the explanations and odd looks if I said I didn't. Never did anything at all for me, never been able to understand why people do it.

never have never will, completely un addictive personality apart from Bikes.
mind I have been known to smoke the odd trout here and there, not to mention suzuki riders
(fuck I am one have to change my opinion DOH!)
Tried smoking, but the idea of smoke going in my lungs doesn't appeal to me, nor does the fear of the damage it might do, so I prefferred brownies. Never tried tea though. Beer is good enough for me now though. ;)
Haven't ever tried smoking a cigarette and don't think I ever will.
Smoking/tobacco companies is one of the things I can get a bit worked up about, particularly when I think about people I care about going for a ciggy to try to cope with stress.

If you're going to smoke, cigars or a pipe are way cooler than cigarettes.
Not that I can afford cigars in my straightened cricumstances, but I do enjoy a puff on my pipe from time to time...

But, I lived in auckland - I noticed it when the reform came in when I went clubbing that weekend (I think it was that weekend or the next weekend whatever), I used to 'hit' the clubs so to speak every weekend, and after the no - smoking reform, I ended up comming home early It was like a sweaty man pit - hated it, havent tried any of the clubs around here, because why would you want to :killingme:killingme... Biff, you are in a particularly difficult position. Every time you smoke one your nicotine level goes back to that of a smoker. You start quitting from scratch every time you have one. Read Allan Carr's book and be free. Here's a little of what he will prove to you:
Quitting is easy.
It takes no willpower.
Substitutes make it more difficult to quit.
How can a substance (nicotine) on the one hand help concentration and on the other hand help you to relax? How can it relieve both boredom and stress? The truth is that it does none of these things. These are myths generated in smokers minds by the subtlety of the nicotine addiction aided by the brainwashing we receive from a society that has accepted the myths as facts.
It takes Allen Carr a whole book to prove his case but he does a very good job of it. Highly recommended reading.

Well done that man. But you're misguided about your ideas on smokers. EVERY smoker wishes he never started. No smoker recommends his kids get hooked on nicotine. No smoker will give Alllen Carr a year's tobacco money upfront so he can make good his pledge to supply them with free tobacco for the rest of their life. Think about it, you'd be 2 grand up after three years.
Every smoker wishes to no longer be a smoker but either can't face the mythical withdrawal pangs ( actually the anguish of wanting something and not being allowed it ) or kids himself he is better off leaving it to the right time to quit, which never comes.

i said if i gave up smoking i would buy myself a bigger better bike than the gpx250 i had at the time.

Beware, you haven't addressed the reason you smoked, at any time you could be hooked again just by smoking one cigarette, then another after a small interval when you feel it appropriate but you don't feel hooked, then before you know it there's 20 appropriate times a day ... how did that happen? Nicotine addiction. Read Allen Carrs book and be guaranteed never to smoke again.
There is actually danger in relying on rewards. The reward has no relation to the reasons for smoking. It does nothing to diminish the feeling of giving up the nicotine.
For a biker attempting to quit on the promise of shouting himself a new bike, the reward of the bike may not compensate for the misery of "giving up" the cigarettes. Logically he was right to prioritise a new bike over the cigs but under the stress of "giving up" the priorities are apt to change. 'Life is miserable without cigs', a new bike is still miles off anyway, 'I'll just have one to help me over this rough patch'.... 'I'll quit in time to get a new bike next summer'... still a smoker.
The only incentive you should need is to be free of having to smoke. Anything else is window dressing.
The trick is not wanting to smoke for the right reason, there is actually nothing to give up, just a pesky desire to top up the nicotine level in the blood and feel normal. Read Allen Carrs book!

If you mean by ad campaigns and such from big tobaco and what not then you're wrong. Atleast for me. Never really bought intoall that. What I posted is just what I experiance. So what's the worst that could happen if you decided to smoke your last cigarette?
Once you have the correct mental framework the nicotine withdrawl is ridiculously easy to cope with. That's why everyone believes it is necessary to have to "want to give up". This is like saying you have to want to get on a bus to get on a bus. Getting rid of the idea that there is anything to give up makes it a nondecision. This is what Allen Carrs book does. Best $28 you'll ever spend in your life.

Choice has nothing to do with it. Nobody chooses to become a smoker. Nicotine addiction is the only reason people inhale the toxic fumes. The fear and suffering of "giving up" is all that keeps them going. Choice doesn't come into it.

Choice has nothing to do with it. Nobody chooses to become a smoker. Nicotine addiction is the only reason people inhale the toxic fumes. The fear and suffering of "giving up" is all that keeps them going. Choice doesn't come into it.
You friggin whimp! And a con man, but only of yourself. Starting smoking IS a personal choice, continuing to smoke IS ALSO a personal choice, albeit coerced by nicotine addiction. BUT, people do give up, and good on 'em. The human animal is capable of things so much greater than the ability to stop contaminating this vessel we are born with.
This poll proves one thing anyway; that non smokers are more motivated than are the smokers as regards voting on a smoking poll. Wonder if guilt has anything to do with that.

I don't smoke, but I still get hot...
Haven't smoked since the days of Mild 10s in the Seventh Form common room. That's some considerable period of time...
Shit! Radioactive isotopes have shorter half lives.

oh the cash i could've saved from not smoking... could've gotten a 2005 gsxr250 hehehe... But seriously, for me i think it's just willpower plus the company you keep. If you hang around smokers all the time then the temptation just keeps building. I quit for about 3 months but unfortunately most of my friends were smokers. Couldn't resist the temptation... But as Navy Gixxer said:
If some one has never smoked, they cant understand how hard it is to stop, for a packet a day smoker they cant understand why someone wants to give up. I'm a smoker thats in the process of giving up and after 15 years it's not easy.

Have nothing against smokers; I've smoked.
I reckon that what people want to do with their own plumbing is their own affair.
What stopped my 'habit', cold turkey, was calculating what the government tax 'take' was per pack & deciding i was already paying enough tax i COULDn't avoid ... without volunteering to pay more. That and my not liking anything to be in control of me except me.
I still find pleasure in the occasional decent duty-free cigar - but it isn't something i have to have.
The thing that really DISGUSTS me is governments raking in the tax on these things with one hand and, with the other distributing shock adverts spouting mealy-mouthed platitudes about how AWFUL it is and doing their best to turn smokers into despised fringe-dwellers.
Excuse me - smoking is legal. As such, fairness demands that smokers receive the same rights and considerations as everybody else. If governments aren't prepared to promote that - offer free quit counselling, patches and suchlike, then make it illegal like other drugs [but realise that you will also have to outlaw your other cash cows, booze and gambling]
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - i'm ranting, arn't i? :o sorry.

How come it's dumb-fuck females that are the main smokers.
Has ANYBODY ever found that smoking cigarettes enhances their looks/longevity/bank acount etc????
And what dick-whack ever thought that smokes 'improved' his chances of 'procreatin'.
All losers smoke- but not all smokers are losers!!!!!

Sorry, going to disagree. You CHOOSE to light that cigarette, you CHOOSE to put it in your mouth and suck in the smoke. Nobody ever forced you to do that.
That said, I'm a non-smoker and completely against smoking. Those ads put me off and I have never considered taking a puff...
I might be missing some things having not "been there, done that", but life is always about choices.

I'm the only one in my family who has never even tried smoking! My brother has given up now, but the rest of the family still smokes. No one in my husband's family smokes and neither does he. My eldest sister is only 14 years older than me but at my wedding this year, someone mistook her for my mother! The women all get those horrible deep lines around their mouth and it really does look revolting - ugh!
I figured if I hated the smell, it wasn't likely I was going to like the taste, so I never bothered trying. My mother and my brother bought one of those quit smoking hypnotism tapes and I sat there while they were playing it. I fell asleep and have never had any desire to smoke, while they smoked all through it and my mother is still smoking today!
When in the third or fourth form at school, we had a visit from some health speaker who brought along two lungs in jars. The diseased lung of a smoker was put on my desk. That helped put me off, it was disgusting!
I love the new anti-smoking laws - I used to hate going out for dinner and having someone light up while I was eating. I much prefer going to pubs now too, because I don't have to come home and wash my hair to get rid of the smell of smoke.

I like the fact that I can go out and not have to put all of my clothes in the laundry immediately upon my return home (otherwise they made the room smell). I like being able to eat without the smell of smoke.
I'm an ex-smoker (I guess) who picks it up and puts it down from time to time. Recently started having puffs of friends cigarettes again, but a bout of flu got rid of any desires along those lines. Will occasionally fall mouthfirst onto a the filter end of a lit cigarette while out - but have to be really influenced by alcohol.
The cost of cigarettes is so high here. When I first smoked (13 - in the Middle East) you could get a pack of Marlboro Light 100's for NZ$2. No wonder all us kids did it. I hate living in a house with a smoker - unless they've already decided to smoke outside. (and I notice that many have made that decision).
Yay to the people who've given up - it DOES take willpower if you're addicted. Fortunately, I never was. Just orally obsessed...

Have a $50 a week savings account that I refer to as my cigarette money.
Mate of mine quit when I pointed out that he was spending more on smokes in a week than bike repayments would be... He now owns a GSXR 750, but can’t afford cigarettes!
Let see, $50 per week is $200 a month so that’s $2,400 a year... What’s the deposit on a new bike? Bout 20%? One I want is about $14k new so 20% is $2,800, and I have the Bandit as a trade in.
Blue I think, a nice new (ex-demo?) blue Kawasaki Z750.
So a pack is $10, and you go through a pack a day... $3,650 a year!
Its so hard being a smug basted, somehow I find the time!

I started about a weeks ago - only a packet and a half so far. gone a few days without etc. I wasnt that fit to start with, but now i struggle to breath normally just sitting not doing anything. I might have slight case of asthma from smokes and hay fever.
Calms me down, feel filthy afterwards, but I like the taste, and like the after smell. I LOVE cigars - got a bunch of cheap phillipino ones $2each but still quite nice. Have had better cubans. Cigars take too long to smoke, and ciggys fill that gap. mind you, when i sit down for a cigar, that finishes and the ciggys come out - I still cant figure out if im addicted or not.
Gona have to get some port for the weekend. mmm cigar and port...

EVERY smoker wishes he never started. No smoker recommends his kids get hooked on nicotine. No smoker will give Alllen Carr a year's tobacco money upfront so he can make good his pledge to supply them with free tobacco for the rest of their life.
Every smoker wishes to no longer be a smoker but either can't face the mythical withdrawal pangs ( actually the anguish of wanting something and not being allowed it ) or kids himself he is better off leaving it to the right time to quit, which never comes.
As a smoker I disagree with you in this post, in fact I dont want to quit. I think maybe, just maybe, you are a bit off topic, as this thread was started by John asking a question, not asking for a rant on smoking and how bad it is for you.
