Low-beam headlight issue

having issues with my low beam. Fuse keeps blowing.

Found the moment it blows is when I put it in gear. If I leave in neutral after start up it's fine but then I'm not going anywhere :doh: so that's no good, then when I put it into 1st the fuse pops. :angry:

TigerTim has said he has heard of this problem before but can't remember how it was fixed.

Anyone else happen to know what to do???

Kinda need to fix so I can head out on an orgaqnised ridewith some mates this weekend!

I'm not familiar with the RF400 but can you disconnet all other lead wires to the dash? I wonder whether wires to the neutral indicator or other lights are shorting somewhere.

What about pulling all unnecessary fuses?

I'm trying to think of circuits that "close" when first is engaged - hence the short situation that causes the fuse to blow.

Might be time to pull the headlamp, remove fairings / seat etc... and check all lead wires to the fusebox / battery for rust / corrosion or cracked insulation

the lamp itself is fine. Had it open yesterday. Tested the circuit yesterday as well with small multimeter. Highbeam drops to nice 0 ohms as does low beam when functioning fuse is in place. With blown fuse in place it would sit around the 14 - 16 ohm mark.

Actually watch the fuse go too. Had the fuse box lid up, and the wiring unplugged from the headlight, started her up. Left it in neutral for a little and as soon as I pushed it into first gear saw the light.. well spark technically:pinch:.. of the fuse blowing.

Perhaps a fault around the neutral switch somewhere.

been back to the shop as I don't have the right tools to play with it myself

The neutral wire was going to be their solution too, but the mechanic looked harder and traced the problem back to the starter connections that were somewhat corroded. He replaced those, but we were short on time cos I'm off to work now and needed the bike back to get to work, so we haven't been able to test to make sure it's fixed fixed, so fingers crossed.
