Hello there! I have recently decided to ditch my car and purchase a shiny new (or not so new, due to my budget) motorcycle.
I have a little bit of experience on geared bikes, have messed around on farm bikes a bit but nothing fast and not on the road.
For a first bike I have been looking at ZXR and CBR 250s. Would like something that looks nice, and is relatively fast (for a 250), but $3000 is about my limit so that makes it a little hard to find something in decent condition..

Just wondering if I could get some advice on what would be best to purchase on this budget, I am open to other bikes, have been looking at Bandits also as they seem to be a little cheaper for a newer bike that has done lower K's.

I am especially concerned with what to look for when purchasing and how many KM's on the odo is too much for the various bikes.

Thanks :D
Vin

Forgot to mention, I am a rather tall chap (6'2) so would I have any trouble on a smaller bike like the ZXR?

Thanks,
Vin

Something like a GSXr250 would be good for a taller person too. Doesn't really matter too much how many km's are on a bike. Chances are, you will only have it for the time it takes to become a full licensed rider. Make sure you find a reliable bike and have it checked by someone who knows what they are looking for.

Good luck , and keep the shiny side up

I had a cbr250rr and it was a very good reliable bike with 32000 kms on the clock, I've seen em still going strong with over 80 000 kms too!
Not sure how you'd go being quite tall tho, I guess just sit on one and find out

Hey Vin, if you can do the maintenance and servicing yourself, then running a bike can be reasonably cheap. Otherwise stick with a car.

The first challenge is to find one that fits you like a glove that you will be happy to ride through the rainy season!

Good luck.

I think I'll need to just head into a dealer that sells used bikes and try a few out for size. Have seen a few CBR's going for fairly decent prices on trademe, might look into getting one of those over a ZXR due to the pricing. Any suggestions on a good dealer to go to in Hamilton?

Boyds motorcycles will have a good range of stock http://www.boydhonda.co.nz/

and the Honda dealer http://www.hondahamilton.co.nz/ if your looking to try and fit a bike.

Then try Hamiton motorcycles then the Yamaha dealer..

Have refined my choices a bit and made a WTB ad on here, a ZXR, CBR or Spada. The Spada might be a little better for someone my height and a little more forgiving than the ZXR or CBR.
Wish me luck! I'll probably be linking tradme ads on here for advice quite a bit haha, I thank you in advance :)
